Ultimate chess match on tap as Brady faces Pats for 1st time - Toronto Star

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady’s legacy is forever steeped in each of the six Super Bowl championship banners he had a part in hanging above New England’s Gillette Stadium.

Yet, he might as well be playing in front of a mirror when he returns to face the Patriots.

Everything will be in reverse.

“I know that home locker room. I know that home tunnel. I know which way the wind blows. I know everything about that,” Brady said this week. “So, in some ways it’ll be unique. I’ve never had that experience. New England will be the first time for me being on the other sideline.”

Brady will be back in Foxborough on Sunday night to meet the Patriots for the first time since he left after 20 seasons to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’ll be opposite not only former coach Bill Belichick, but past teammates who have also never taken an NFL field and looked across at Brady wearing another team’s jersey, let alone ever had a chance to tackle him.

“The opportunity is wonderful and I’m looking forward for the moment,” Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. said.

While they all have played against former teammates before, the Patriots acknowledge this time is much different. None of those other players has the institutional knowledge Brady does of their defensive schemes or tendencies.

It makes the margin for error minute against a quarterback who is a master at getting the ball out quickly and reading and deceiving defenses with his eyes.

“It’s gonna be a guy that he’s gonna know a lot of what we do,” said veteran safety Devin McCourty, who won three Super Bowls with Brady. “So what we do, we’ve gotta do a good job of. We have to play our best football.”

This 44-year-old version of Brady is still playing at a high level after taking the Bucs to a Super Bowl title last season. He leads the league this season with 10 touchdown passes and his 362.3 passing yards per game are second to Las Vegas’ Derek Carr.

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, left, speaks with senior football advisor Matt Patricia, right, during an NFL football practice, Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021, in Foxborough, Mass.

Tampa Bay’s 34.3 points per game are also tied for tops in the NFL, thanks largely to one of the most stacked offenses in the league that includes receivers Chris Godwin, Mike Evans and tight end Rob Gronkowski

“This is one of those weeks where we can’t have a bunch of ‘my bads,’” McCourty said. “We gotta be on.”

As much as Brady knows the Patriots, they also know him. But Belichick, 8-11 since Brady’s departure, said it doesn’t mean they will reinvent themselves this week.

“Certainly, Tom has an intimate knowledge of everything that we do here, more so than any other player in the league by far. So, I’m sure he’ll use it to his advantage. I would expect him to,” Belichick said. “I don’t think it would be in our best interest to go in there and do everything differently than we’ve done it all year. What we need to do is continue to do the things we do and do them better. That would help us more than anything else.”

ELITE CLUB

A victory would make Brady the fourth quarterback with wins against all 32 NFL teams, joining Brett Favre, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning. With 68 yards passing Brady will surpass Brees’ mark of 80,358 yards, most ever in the regular season. It would add to his long list of NFL records that already includes most TD passes (591), most wins as a starting quarterback (232), most Super Bowl titles (seven), and most conference championships (10).

SHAQ ATTACK

For all the talk about what Brady’s arrival in Tampa Bay did for the offense, the defense has been a big part of the team’s success, too. In addition to leading the league in rushing defense each of the past two seasons, the Bucs have had one of the league’s most effective pass rushes since Todd Bowles was hired as coordinator in 2019.

Linebacker Shaquil Barrett topped the NFL with 19 1/2 sacks two years ago and finished with eight during the regular season in 2020. He has one through three games this year, none the past two weeks.

As a team, the Bucs are last in the league with three sacks.

“I think Todd knows and Shaq knows it’s time to get to the quarterback,” coach Bruce Arians said. “Just one sack is not good enough.”

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Arians is noted for his success working with quarterbacks over a long career as a NFL assistant and head coach. Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, Carson Palmer and Jameis Winston are among the high draft picks Arians mentored over the years.

The coach, who turns 69 on Sunday, likes what he’s seen so far from New England rookie Mac Jones.

“I loved him coming out. He’s smart, a pocket player who’s going to get the ball out, and he’s very accurate,” Arians said. “Obviously, pressure doesn’t bother him. He played in some big games (at Alabama). He led his team to the championship so, yeah, he’s legit.”

DON’T FORGET GRONK

Brady’s return has in many ways overshadowed that of Gronkowski, who spent nine seasons (2010-18) with New England and ended his tenure with 521 receptions for 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns, the most receiving TDs in franchise history.

He enters Sunday with 8,668 receiving yards and can surpass Greg Olsen (8,683) for the fifth-most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history.

Gronk originally retired following the 2018 season after winning a third Super Bowl ring with the Patriots before being coaxed out of retirement by Brady in 2020.

RED-HOT SKYHAWK VOLLEYBALL SQUAD CRANKS UP SEASON-LONG FIVE-MATCH HOMESTAND THIS WEEKEND AGAINST OVC RIVAL EASTERN ILLINOIS - UTM Athletics

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball squad will look to take advantage of a lengthy homestand when it hosts Eastern Illinois in Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend. First serve from Skyhawk Fieldhouse is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2.

This upcoming stretch for UT Martin is only the fourth instance of a five-match OVC homestand in school history. The Skyhawks also hosted five consecutive OVC opponents in 2011, 2006 and 1998 – going 11-4 in those matches. UT Martin has won three straight matches (all sweeps) against Eastern Illinois at Skyhawk Fieldhouse, including a pair of decisions on Feb. 21-22 as part of the shortened 2020-21 campaign.

Winners of five of its last six matches, UT Martin (6-10, 2-1 OVC) is coming off an exhilarating five-set triumph at Southeast Missouri on Wednesday – its first victory in Cape Girardeau since 2015. In that match, the Skyhawks – who won the first two sets of the match – faced a 12-8 deficit in the decisive fifth set before coming through for seven of the final eight points down the stretch. UT Martin turned away 19 blocks at the net – its highest total in an 89-match span (since Sept. 2, 2018).

Karen Scanlon (team-highs of 12 kills, 16 digs) and Haeleigh Paulino (23 assists, 13 digs) helped guide the Skyhawks against Southeast Missouri while Zoe Merriweather (career-bests of 10 blocks and nine kills) and Logan Wallick (nine kills, career-best eight blocks) narrowly missed out on double-doubles.

Merriweather has been a menace to the opposition at the net – rejecting 2.10 blocks per set in league play and 1.26 blocks per set overall – topping the league in both categories. As a team, UT Martin ranks first in the OVC with 3.25 blocks per set against conference competition.

Overall, Scanlon paces the Skyhawks in kills (135, 2.29 per set) and total blocks (47) while Paulino accounts for a team-high 387 assists (6.56 per set) and 14 service aces. Defensively, Baillie Kearns' 3.46 digs-per-set average leads UT Martin as the freshman libero out of St. Louis, Mo. has cracked double-digits in the digs column a dozen times this fall.

Eastern Illinois (7-5, 0-2 OVC) won seven of its first eight matches of the season but enters the weekend on a four-match losing streak. That includes a pair of road sweeps at Murray State during the OVC-opening weekend on Sept. 24-25. The Panthers have tallied the most service aces (2.00 per set) in the OVC and boast the league's co-leaders in that category in Lorraine Perez and Kylie Michael (0.44 per set apiece).

Danielle Allen owns a team-high 3.14 kills-per-set average while Emily Wilcox tops the OVC with a .328 hitting percentage. Summerlyn Smith has also proven to be an effective facilitator this season as she was named OVC Setter of the Week on Sept. 13. The Eastern Illinois defense is headed by Christina Martinez Mundo (4.45 digs per set) and Kameryn Sillmon (0.90 blocks per set).

Both matches this weekend will be streamed live on ESPN+. Those links - as well as a link for live stats for both days - can be found at the top of the webpage.

CF Montréal no match for high-scoring, league-leading Revolution - Montreal Gazette

New England erupted for three goals in the opening 30 minutes and cruised to a 4-1 victory Wednesday night at Saputo Stadium.

Article content

If New England is the measuring stick against which performance is evaluated, CF Montréal isn’t close to being one of Major League Soccer’s elite teams.

The Revolution erupted for three goals in the opening 30 minutes and cruised to a 4-1 victory Wednesday night at Saputo Stadium in a thorough and dominating performance.

DeJuan Jones opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Adam Buksa made it 2-0 in the 17th. Rudy Camacho’s own-goal in the 30th made it a virtually insurmountable three-goal cushion. Joaquin Torres scored for CF Montréal in the 32nd before Gustavo Bou responded in the 86th for New England.

The Revolution, running away atop the Eastern Conference, improved to 20-4-5 while defeating CFM for the sixth straight time.

The Canadian side, now 10-10-7, slipped below the playoff line into eighth with its second consecutive defeat.

CFM had the game’s first serious scoring threat, in the seventh minute, on a cross from Mathieu Choinière to Romell Quioto, whose shot from the penalty spot went just wide.

Article content

In retrospect, how might this match have turned out differently had Quioto set the pace with the opening goal? Despite CF Montréal’s early aggressive approach, it was the visitors who opened the scoring and continued its effective onslaught.

The first goal seemingly materialized out of nothing. Brandon Bye’s cross into the box eventually went to Carles Gil. His shot was stopped by goalkeeper James Pantemis, but Jones scored on the rebound.

Only seven minutes later, Bye’s drop pass went to Bou. His cross into the box was headed past Pantemis by Buksa, who scored his 13th goal.

The Revolution nearly took a three-goal lead in the 28th minute, but Tommy McNamara’s shot from distance was parried out by Pantemis. But the inevitable occurred only two minutes later. A cross from Bou deflected off CFM defender Camacho for an own-goal.

The match was only 30 minutes old and CF Montréal was trailing by three goals. Little wonder some boos came raining down from several dispirited spectators.

But the braying turned to cheers two minutes later when Torres, from just inside the box, beat Matt Turner with a low, right-footed shot.

Both teams continued making liberal offensive forays for the remainder of the opening half.

Pantemis made a sliding save on Buksa in the 35th from point-blank range. In the 37th, Quioto’s low, left-footed shot beat Turner but just missed the far post. In the 39th, Buksa struck the post from the left side. Seconds later, Turner made a save on Victor Wanyama from distance.

CFM was the better side after intermission. The club continued its aggressive approach, realizing it needed quick scores.

In the 65th, second-half substitute Zachary Brault-Guillard sent a low cross through the six-yard box that neither Quioto nor Djordje Mihailovic could get their feet on for what would probably have been a second goal.

CFM manager Wilfried Nancy tried to put offensive players on the pitch. Bjørn Johnsen replaced Samuel Piette in the 67th minute, while Ballou Tabla came on for Choinière in the 75th.

Any possibility of a comeback was dashed when Bou scored his 13th of the season on a low shot to the far side. Although Bou appeared to be offside on the play, the goal counted after a video review.

CFM hosts Atlanta United Saturday night in a critical match.

Big-match habit: Pessina scores CL winner for Atalanta - Toronto Star

BERGAMO, Italy (AP) — Atalanta midfielder Matteo Pessina does not score often. When he does, though, the goals usually come in big matches.

Like his brace in a 3-1 win over Napoli in the second leg of the Italian Cup semifinals in February.

Like his goals against Wales and Austria — both winners — during Italy’s run to the European Championship title.

Pessina had gone scoreless since his 105th-minute goal against Austria at Wembley Stadium three months ago until he used one touch to redirect a cross from Duván Zapata in the second half of Atalanta’s 1-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday.

It was Pessina’s first goal in his 14th European club match and it put Atalanta in control of Group F ahead of Manchester United’s game against Villarreal later.

The match was Atalanta’s first Champions League game at its renovated Gewiss Stadium with its supporters in attendance.

“It’s impossible to describe how emotional it is for me to score my first Champions League goal and celebrate it with the fans,” Pessina said.

Atalanta leads the group with four points, one point ahead of Young Boys, which stunned United in the first round of group matches.

Villarreal, which held Atalanta to a draw two weeks ago, has one point, while United has zero.

Pessina also had a perfect chance from point-blank range just before the break but lost his balance just as he was connecting with the ball.

Atalanta's Matteo Pessina celebrates after scoring his side's opening goal during the Champions League Group F soccer match between Atalanta and Young Boys, at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, Italy, Wednesday, Sept 29, 2021.

The goal came following strong work from Zapata, who created numerous chances.

Atalanta lost key winger Robin Gosens to an apparent injury early on then had a first-half goal waved off by the VAR for offside.

Match Analysis: FC Edmonton 2-3 Cavalry FC – Canadian Premier League - Canadian Premier League

Final Score: FC Edmonton 2-3 Cavalry FC
    Goalscorers: Ongaro (57′), Didic (70′); Fisk (34′), Selemani (44′), Klomp (80′)
Game of the 2021 season: 80
    CPL match: 215

Match in a minute or less

Cavalry FC and FC Edmonton played out one of the more memorable Al Classico’s of recent memory… But the result was the same. The Cavs outdid the Eddies in the first half on goals from Ben Fisk and Ahinga Selemani – a lead that was erased by back-to-back goals off corners set up by Fraser Aird and converted by Easton Ongaro and Amer Didic. Though, like most things in this tie, Calgary manages to do what Edmonton does but just a bit better, this time through Daan Klomp’s headed effort off a corner. With the result, Cavalry captured the Wild Rose Cup having clinched the season series with their Alberta rivals. The supporters-created cup itself will be handed out on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Spruce Meadows.

    Three Observations

Mini-game of corners marks Al Classico

It was a corner kick fest at Clarke Field Wednesday – hope you brought your flag with you.

This Al Classico tilt saw all three second-half goals come from a staggering 15 corners – tied for the most of any match this season. While that may sound boring to many football fans, Wednesday was something much different. Both teams field impressive headers of the ball (Amer Didic and Easton Ongaro for Edmonton, Daan Klomp and Karifa Yao on Cavalry) and it was fascinating to watch.

Yao was bested by Didic on the latter’s goal while Didic himself would have wanted something more on Klomp’s winner. It was an intriguing mini-game that was well-observed by Klomp who, after the game, said bluntly: “This can’t happen for us because we’re a great team in the air. Losing for my two corners like basically like those situations can happen.”

Didic himself lamented the “mental error” in the fifth and final goal, completing a segment of the game that reads more like a tale of two competing bigs in basketball than a game of soccer.

Cavalry captures ‘legacy trophy’ of Wild Rose Cup

Cavalry FC captured the 2021 Wild Rose Cup with the result Wednesday as they clinched a winning record against their Alberta rivals. Cavalry also won the supporter-created trophy handed out to the team with the all-Alberta winning record in 2019.

“This is the people’s game, and we’re just a part of it… This is a legacy trophy,” Cavalry coach Wheeldon Jr. said, referencing the fans that travelled north from Calgary for the match. “We’ve only had four home games in front of fans this season. We’ll be able to celebrate with them on Oct. 9 when we bring that trophy home.”

Edmonton, meanwhile, goes another match without a win against the Cavs since 2019.

You wonder if the Eddies are cursed, especially after their second-half surge, as they failed to beat the Cavs in their 11th meeting since 2019.

“We just have the mental edge on this club,” Wheeldon Jr. said.

Eddies spurred by heated halftime in second frame

FC Edmonton coach Alan Koch revealed his team endured an impassioned halftime team talk that clearly brought the group around – Easton Ongaro’s goal just moments after halftime was an early example of its effectiveness.

“The first 45 minutes was not a very mature performance so we really hammered the guys tonight,” Koch said, referring to a particularly flat attacking makeup and some significant mistakes that led to Cavalry’s goals. “There was yelling and screaming at halftime and we saw what we wanted but we should see that right out of the gates and ride that wave for 90 minutes.”

The match saw several missed chances at both ends – and not just from corners – while defensive miscues led to goals and chances. Edmonton’s late start was indicative of recent play, as the Eddies have been outscored 5-13 in the first half this season… While posting a positive 16-12 record in the second frame.

“We’re always coming back in games and full credit to the guys, but it’s just a matter of time before we need to say something and start changing how we do things,” Eddies defender Amer Didic said after the match.

Koch didn’t mince words with his cry for individual performances from his team after the match, emphasizing that “certain individuals need to step up to the plate.”

A big statement as the Eddies slip firmly out of the playoff race as returning roster spots for the 2022 season becomes the priority.

    CanPL.ca Player of the Match

    Fraser Aird, FC Edmonton

FC Edmonton’s right-back led the team in just about every category Wednesday night but those two corner deliveries were flat out perfect. It made the difference (for a time) and reasserted his CPL reputation as a technical wizard.

    What’s next?

The Eddies will be back in action this Saturday when they visit Winnipeg and Valour FC (3:00pm ET/1:00pm MT). Cavalry FC is set to close out their seven-match league road trip Tuesday also away to Valour (8:00pm ET/6:00pm MT). Watch all matches live on OneSoccer.

Final Score: Valour FC 1-3 Pacific FC
    Goalscorers: Dyer 30′; Diaz 3′ (penalty) & 45+2′, Blasco 69′
Game of the 2021 season: 79
    CPL match: 214

Match in a minute or less

Pacific FC moved seven points clear of Cavalry FC at the top of the table on Wednesday night, beating Valour FC 3-1 at IG Field.

The visitors took the lead just three minutes into the match, as Alejandro Diaz scored his first of two goals from the penalty spot after he was knocked over by Rocco Romeo inside the box moments prior.

Moses Dyer equalized for Valour around the half-hour mark, cutting to his right before firing a low shot across the box that Callum Irving was unable to reach with a dive toward the far post.

Pacific took the lead again in first half stoppage time, as Diaz capitalized on a mistake at the back from Valour that allowed him to take a shot on target from a few yards out. He doesn’t miss opportunities like that, and placed his 9th goal of the season into the back of the net to give The Tridents a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Similar to Dyer’s goal in the opening half, Victor Blasco gave Pacific some added peace of mind with his first goal of the year — a 69th minute strike from outside the box that found the bottom left corner of the goal.

    Three Observations

Mistakes from Valour backline continue to cost them points

Valour FC’s winless streak was extended to seven matches with Wednesday’s defeat, as self-inflicted mistakes continue to prove fatal.

The goals they conceded against Pacific came as a result of a split-second error, as has been the case on many of the goals they’ve conceded this season. The first tally, a penalty in just the third minute of the match, forced Valour to go back to the drawing board moments after taking the pitch.

Closing down Alejandro Diaz in the box, Romeo pushed the Pacific attacker to the ground from behind, and the referee pointed to the spot. The Mexican striker fired the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal, opening the scoring early.

Diaz benefitted from a mistake made by the other centre-back, Stefan Cebara, in first half stoppage time as poor communication in front of goal opened up an opportunity to get a shot away from a few yards out. Kadin Chung chipped the ball over the Valour backline, and Diaz got to it first — putting pressure on Cebara with

The Valour defender seemed to try and shield the ball away from Diaz, and allow Jonathan Sirois to come out of his goal and collect it, but Sirois took a few steps before hesitating to commit himself to the play. Diaz ran around Cebara, taking a touch before striking the ball past Sirois with his left foot.

The third Pacific goal took an impressive effort from Victor Blasco to beat Sirois from outside the box, but Valour failed to close him down as he ran toward the penalty area and got the shot away.

Valour had eleven total shots to Pacific’s nine, and had 56 percent possession of the ball on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough to walk away with a result. Mistakes at the back are something that they’ve been trying to limit all season, and need to fix as soon as possible if they’re going to get back into the playoff race.

“You don’t train these situations because every day players are put in situations where they could make a mistake in training for naught,” said head coach Phillip Dos Santos after the match. “You look at the way we conceded in York, and now tonight a penalty right at the first minute.”

“What’s the problem in playing a ball into the top row of the stands if we need to? You don’t need to try and please me with any type of excessively fancy actions when you’re in a situation of emergency. We just have to be effective and pragmatic, and that’s the message and make sure these things don’t happen again.”

Victor Blasco’s first goal of the season was a long time coming

Victor Blasco scored his first goal of the 2021 campaign on Wednesday night, placing the ball into the bottom left corner from outside the penalty area to give Pacific a two-goal lead.

The Spaniard ran toward the box before cutting to his right, opening up a lane to shoot and getting his shot away. The goal came on his 17th shot of the season, and 10th on target. He’s had a handful of good chances to score — none coming closer than a shot from distance in the Canadian Championship a week ago that seemed destined to hit the back of the net, but was dramatically headed away on the goal line by David Norman Jr.

Blasco missed the start of the season after his father passed away — adversity which he has overcome in the time since, according to his head coach Pa-Modou Kah.

“It’s been a long time coming, and it’s a fantastic day for him to be able to score a goal that he’s been looking for since he came back with the adversity that hit him before the season,” said Kah after the match. “For us, this is the thing we were hoping for Victor to be able to do — to get back to scoring goals, to being one of the best players in this league.

“Also for this club, it’s a timely goal going into this stretch that we’re going in, and hopefully he can hit the ground running because we’re going to need him — he’s a very important piece in what we’re doing.”

Blasco spoke to the media after the match as well, and talked about how much the goal meant to him.

“For me, like everyone knows, it’s not been the easiest season, but since I came here the team has been really good to me, they’re a family to me,” Blasco said. “I knew a goal was going to come, there was nothing to worry about. Soccer is like this sometimes — you score and you don’t know how, and sometimes it gets cleared on the line and it doesn’t go in.

“Most important is that the team is doing well, and if I can be a part of it, better.”

Dos Santos coaches at IG Field for the first time, stresses importance of picking up points at home

After taking over the Valour head coaching job last week, and first travelling to Ontario to take on York United, Phillip Dos Santos got his IG Field debut on Wednesday.

While the result didn’t go his team’s way, Dos Santos was impressed by the stadium, and the Valour fans, who were noisy all night in an attempt to push their team forward.

“It’s a great facility,” said Phillip Dos Santos after the match. “It’s great, it feels good. It’s a massive stadium, but you have a nice picture right in front of you with the fans right there being loud.

“I’m looking forward to not only playing here, but winning games here and making this a home that everyone knows will be difficult to come to. That’s who we need to be, so I’m looking forward to that.”

With Valour’s next three matches taking place at IG Field as well, Valour are hoping to take advantage of their home support as they try to get back into the playoff picture.

“It’s very important,” said Dos Santos. “If we want to still be in the race, we need to make points at home, and we need to start winning games at home.”

Two goals in the first half — a penalty and a well-taken strike to capitalize on a defensive error — from Alejandro Diaz put Pacific on the right track to pick up three points.

Final Score: HFX Wanderers FC 2-1 Atlético Ottawa

Game of the 2021 season: 78

Match in a minute or less

Joao Morelli has done it again.

HFX Wanderers’ brightest light in 2021 showed off his quality once more on Wednesday as the Haligonians beat Atlético Ottawa for the third time this season, 2-1. Morelli scored the Wanderers’ first goal just before halftime with a penalty kick, before following it up just after the break with a sensational strike from distance. Ryan Telfer would add a goal for Ottawa in the 68th minute as they attempted to mount a comeback — and they certainly did make things interesting — but HFX held firm to hang on for the win.

    Three Observations

Record-breaker Morelli remains an Atlético Ottawa killer

What more can be said about the season Joao Morelli is putting together in Halifax?

The magical Brazilian attacker has been far and away the Wanderers’ best and most valuable player in 2021 so far, and he remained so on Wednesday with yet another brace. With 14 goals now on the season, Morelli surpassed Tristan Borges’ 2019 benchmark of 13 with his pair in this match.

As a team, the Wanderers have scored 21 goals so far — just seven of them off the boot of a player other than Morelli. He’s scored eight of HFX’s nine total goals against Atlético Ottawa this year, too. With eight games still to play after this one, Morelli could very well add a handful more to his total in this extraordinary season he’s having.

Of course, one of Morelli’s two goals on Wednesday came from the penalty spot — an opportunity which Cory Bent won for him — but his second was a tremendous finish from outside of the box. Stephen Hart has been calling out for his other attacking players to start contributing in the goalscoring department and get Morelli some help, but if he really does continue doing things like this the secondary scoring may not be as necessary as once thought.

“(It’s) the liberty he has on the field, he has a lot of freedom on the field,” explained Ottawa defender Matthew Arnone about what makes Morelli difficult to counter.

“He’s not a player that stays in a fixed position, he’s not somebody that’s perhaps in a structure, let’s say, more so given the freedom to roam and be creative. He’s got a knack for showing up in the right spots, today he was neutralized for most of the game and he shows up at the top of the box on a transition and if I’m not mistaken it’s one of the only sniffs at goal he had. He’s a quality player and we knew that coming in, we know that based on his scoring record against us and in the league, he finds ways, and that’s why he’s a top player.”

For those wondering, Morelli himself revealed postmatch the significance of the wristband he kissed and flashed to camera after scoring his first goal: He dedicated the goals to his aunt back in Brazil, who was recently diagnosed with cancer — he assured everyone in the post-match press conference it’s nothing to worry about, but he nonetheless wanted to show his support with the gesture.

HFX shows resolve in tight late moments

After the Wanderers went up 2-0, it really looked as though they would see the match out in comfortable fashion. For a stretch after the second goal, a Morelli hat trick marker seemed more likely than an Ottawa comeback.

As soon as Ryan Telfer scored in the 68th minute, though, the match seemed to turn on its head. Ottawa ended up with just over 65% possession in the second half, but the Wanderers held them to just three shots from that time — one of which, of course, was the goal.

Peter Schaale and Eriks Santos, who are developing a very good partnership at centre-back, were resolute together in the middle of the backline, with Schaale making seven clearances and Santos making four.

“I thought we controlled most of the game; at times it started to get a little bit scrappy when they started to push the numbers on us, but I thought we did well,” coach Stephen Hart said of his side’s performance to hold on to the win. The goal was probably avoidable, I have to see it again, but the players did very well defensively — didn’t give up a lot of shots, didn’t give up a lot of corners. Not bad.”

Make that two consecutive games, now, where the Wanderers have been able to maintain a narrow one-goal lead right to the end despite pressure from the opposition. That hasn’t always been the case with this team, who have dropped points to teams like Ottawa and York United by conceding late goals.

Coupland promising but isolated in no. 10 role

Teenage phenom Antoine Coupland has slowly been working his way into more regular minutes for Atlético Ottawa the past few weeks, having started the last two games in a number 10 position with Alberto Soto unavailable. The Chelsea, Quebec native has shown a few real signs of improvement in his recent outings, with his confidence starting to grow; he’s always been touted as an exceptionally talented player, but now that he’s settling into the professional level that talent is beginning to rise to the surface.

Coupland was very energetic in Ottawa’s press on Wednesday, often drifting higher than the striker before dropping back into the pocket upon his side regaining possession. With the ball, Coupland showed some real talent in taking on opponents and looking to create dangerous chances for his teammates. That said, he didn’t actually get the ball very often — despite playing in the middle of the park, Coupland was limited to just 24 touches in his 55 minutes of work. He was accurate with 12 of his 14 passes, which came in all sorts of different areas across the field as he had to work very hard just to find the ball.

HFX did a good job of cutting off passes into midfield, which is part of the reason Coupland was wanting for service, but in general Ottawa have struggled this year to get the ball to creative players.

“Antoine did a great job because it’s not easy trying to defend (Andre) Rampersad and the other midfielders on Halifax,” Ottawa manager Mista said postmatch. “We trust a lot in Antine to have more meaningful time, and we are here to improve all together.”

Coupland is expected to be a major part of this Ottawa team’s future, so for him to start really getting comfortable in the starting XI is a major positive in an otherwise difficult season for the club.

    CanPL.ca Player of the Match

    Joao Morelli, HFX Wanderers

It’s hard to justify picking anybody else. Morelli is the Wanderers’ MVP (and perhaps the league’s), and it showed on Wednesday with his seven-shot, two-goal performance.

    What’s next?

HFX will head back out on the road now, as they visit York United this Sunday (1:00 pm ET). Atlético Ottawa, meanwhile, are back home at TD Place on Sunday for a clash with Forge FC (3:30 pm ET). Watch all matches live on OneSoccer.

Andreescu had previously received a first-round bye as the eighth seed.

She's scheduled to play at next week's Indian Wells tournament, where she's the defending champion after taking the 2019 crown. The California competition was cancelled due to the pandemic in 2020, and pushed back from its normal March dates in 2021.

Player from Ukrainian side Kremenchuk given 13 match ban after racist gesture - Reuters

KYIV, Sept 29 (Reuters) - A player from Ukrainian ice hockey side Kremenchuk has been banned for 13 matches for making a racist gesture in a national championship match this weekend, the country's league said on Wednesday.

The sanction against striker Andriy Deniskin is the maximum possible and it came into force on Tuesday, said a statement.

The incident took place during Sunday's match against Donbass who said they called on the league's disciplinary committee to impose the "strictest possible punishment" on Deniskin.

"Any discrimination on the grounds of race, nationality, colour, religion or other, including during official ice hockey matches by players, officials of teams is unacceptable," the league said.

Deniskin, who was ejected from the game, later apologised for his actions on Instagram, the Ukrainian Hockey League said in a statement earlier this week.

PREVIEW: FC Edmonton vs. Cavalry FC — Match #80 – Canadian Premier League - Canadian Premier League

    2021 CPL regular season — Match #80
    FC Edmonton vs. Cavalry FC
    September 29, 2021 at 8:00pm MT/10:00pm ET
    Clarke Field, Edmonton, Alberta
Watch Live: OneSoccer.ca // Tickets available here

The Al Classico light will be reignited Wednesday night at Clarke Field in Edmonton when Cavalry FC comes to town to face the Eddies in a pivotal match in more ways than one.

The Wild Rose Cup, the supporters-created trophy given to the winner of the all-Alberta clash, could be won Wednesday (more on that later) by the Cavs as they look to get back into the win column in the provincial capital. Coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.’s side is on a rare four-match winless run having most recently been undone by league bottom-dwellers Atlético Ottawa 3-1 at TD Place. A neat finish from Victor Loturi following a poor giveaway was all the side had to smile about on a day where they peppered the Ottawa goal with 18 shots and 45 crosses – including over a dozen each from Mo Farsi and Jose Escalante. Saturday’s loss along with two defeats to Pacific FC and a draw to Valour FC means Cavalry has failed to grab a win over four matches for just the third time in club history.

“We just have to put this in context – we’ve only lost five games while Forge, the reigning double champions, have seven,” Wheeldon Jr. said, adding the team is 2-1-2 on this extended road trip set to end this weekend in Winnipeg. “That’s a pretty good record to have on the road. We knew it was going to be a bizarre league season with lots of ups and downs. Right now we’re on a minor down, but the only way is up.”

Edmonton, meanwhile, should be in relatively good shape physically despite a cross-country trip to visit HFX Wanderers FC, a match that ended 1-0 on a Joao Morelli goal. Alan Koch’s side didn’t play particularly poorly against Halifax, especially in the second half, as they emerged from a rare 11-day layoff but failed to score.

“We’ve played well in almost every game we’ve played this year,” Koch said before the match. “I might be the calmest person in Edmonton right now – I’m thoroughly enjoying the players going through these difficult moments and when you play quality teams like Cavalry you have to step up you have to rise to those challenges.”

    3 THINGS TO WATCH:

    • Wild Rose Cup could be decided: Wednesday’s Al Classico tilt could see the second ever awarding of the Wild Rose Cup – the supporter-created award handed out to the team with the seasonal winning record in the all-Alberta tilt. Cavalry needs only a draw to ensure their second Wild Rose capture following their inaugural win in 2019, having posted two wins and one draw in their season series thus far. These two teams will clash again in just over a week and a half when they close out the Al Classico regular-season slate at ATCO Field (Saturday, Oct. 9) which is when the cup will be presented. Edmonton has never beaten the Cavs across nine occasions.
    • Veteran presence returning for Cavalry: In the lead up to Wednesday, Wheeldon Jr. said the team will not be taking Edmonton lightly, adding they may have been guilty of that against Ottawa – a rare 3-1 loss to the league’s bottom feeders. Wheeldon mentioned after the match he had “got answers for the players” that can lead them to the playoffs following a mistake-laden affair without veterans Nik Ledgerwood and Mason Trafford. For the Al Classico, Wheeldon Jr. said fans will see some of those answers: “A mentor of mine once told me leadership is situational and leadership is all about being there when your team needs you, whether it’s defending or attacking.” Before the match, Wheeldon Jr. revealed another of his veterans, striker Joe Mason, remains out with a knee strain sustained during the penalty shout-turned-Ledgerwood free kick goal against Valour FC earlier this month, adding he could be back in a week. Anthony Novak will be subject to a late fitness test too.
    • Edmonton shaping identity: Koch revealed his side had a “big heart-to-heart” conversation following the Halifax loss around the team’s identity and how they want to proceed through to 2022, adding the team values defensive solidity and creating chances. Finishing remains a missing piece as the side sits dead last with 19 goals for, but perhaps it’s time for a late-season pallet cleanser for Edmonton who has played well above their standing in the league. Before the goalless loss to Halifax, the side had put three past Valour and managed to find the net away to top-ranked Pacific. They currently sit above Cavalry in expected goals from open play and create well from wide areas – fullback Fraser Aird has faced 10 more chances, 37 in total, than any other CPLer according to Centre Circle Data.

    KEY QUOTES

“The way the schedule is, we get to play Cavalry a lot and for us as a group, we’re grateful for it. These games give us great opportunities to assess our group as much as we can – to play in meaningful games against battle-hardened teams like Cavalry is huge.”– FC Edmonton head coach Alan Koch

“They are a very well organized team and they’re still scoring goals… I can’t believe they’ve not won more than they have to be honest, because I think they’re a very good team. It makes us even more prepared because we are playing against a good team.” — Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

Valour FC return to IG Field on Wednesday night for the first match in a four-game homestand, and the first home match since Phillip Dos Santos was named head coach less than a week ago.

Dos Santos’ CPL managerial debut came on Sunday afternoon, away to York United, where his side fell 2-1 to one of their rivals for the fourth and final playoff spot. Brett Levis gave the visitors the lead in the 27th minute, but a pair of second-half goals from 18-year-old Lowell Wright saw The Nine Stripes walk away with the three points.

Pacific FC are coming off a loss in Ontario as well — just their fourth defeat of the season. Pa-Modou Kah’s side made the trip to Hamilton to take on Forge FC, but lost 2-1 to the back-to-back champions. Alejandro Diaz tied the game at 1-1 near the end of the first half after Mo Babouli scored an early opener, but Omar Browne’s 80th-minute debut goal won the match for his new side.

Pacific and Valour have met three times already in 2021, and The Tridents have owned the season series. Down a man for the last 15 minutes, Pacific FC battled back from a goal down to win 2-1 in their first meeting of the season, with former Valour attacker Marco Bustos scoring the winning goal for the home side. Alejandro Diaz and Terran Campbell scored the goals in a 2-0 win at IG Field in mid-August, with both again finding the scoresheet as part of a 3-2 thriller at Starlight Stadium, won by the home side.

After Wednesday’s match, they will meet again once more in the regular season — on October 16th at Starlight Stadium.

Dropping points could be disastrous for Valour in their hunt for a playoff spot, as they currently sit in sixth place — six points back of York United for the fourth and final spot. They’re two points back of fifth-placed HFX Wanderers as well, who also play on Wednesday — at home against Atletico Ottawa.

Pacific remains at the top of the CPL table, four points up on Cavalry FC, who have a match in hand.

    3 THINGS TO WATCH:

    • Both sides missing a key player through suspension: Both Valour and Pacific will be missing an influential player on Wednesday night through suspension – Valour parting with captain Daryl Fordyce after the midfielder picked up his fourth yellow card of the season on Sunday — which resulted in a one-match ban. The Tridents will be missing attacker Josh Heard, who has also been penalized for yellow card accumulation. The Pacific star picked up his eighth yellow card of the season and resulting second suspension of the season. Both players have made 18 appearances this season in CPL action. Fordyce has impressed in the midfield — providing a spark on and off the pitch as a reliable central midfielder and club co-captain with the injured Andrew Jean-Baptiste. Heard has had a great 2021 season thus far scoring three goals, and adding an assist, in a year where he’s become one of the first names on the team sheet.
    • Dos Santos happy with the effort from his side in first match: Although his side fell 2-1 to York United on Sunday, new Valour boss Phillip Dos Santos was happy with the fight they showed. They battled hard to take the lead on the road, and kept pushing after conceding twice in quick succession. The effort was there throughout, and they didn’t get too down on themselves, and nearly fought back to pick up a point. It wasn’t an ideal result in a tight playoff race, but it certainly wasn’t a poor performance. “If there’s a positive I take out of that it’s the competitiveness that the guys showed, and their desire to do well, and the fact that I was able to assess the individuals and see what they are about and see what they can do in situations that are difficult,” Dos Santos said after the match. “That’s where I need to keep my mind, and say ‘okay, this is the platform we have, and where do we go from here to grow’, and that’s how I’m going to go about it.”
    • Can Valour break winless streak?: It has been over a month since Valour last won a match – a 3-2 Canadian Championship victory over Atletico Ottawa on August 21, followed by a 3-0 win over FC Edmonton three days later, seemed to be a sign that Valour were turning a corner and regaining their early season form — but they are yet to win a game since. In the six matches since that win over Edmonton, Valour have picked up a single point — losing five times, and drawing once. That stretch includes a 3-2 loss to Wednesday’s opponents Pacific, and a 3-0 to the Eddies, who got their revenge after losing to Valour by the same scoreline. The lone point came against Cavalry, a 1-1 draw on September 18th at IG Field. This fixture hasn’t been very kind to Valour in the past, as Pacific have won seven of their nine meetings, with Valour winning once and one match ending in a draw.

    KEY QUOTES

“I looked at the players and I think there’s quality in this group. There’s a mix of age and maturity. There’s a foundation that has been built. I don’t think you can come in with an approach where you just tear apart that foundation, you have to build on that. We need to have the humility of understanding what was good, what has worked for the team and what we can add right away in order to be successful in the short term and then what we want to build going forward.” — Valour FC head coach Phillip Dos Santos

“For me, the biggest thing as a coach is to worry about yourself. I cannot worry about Forge, I cannot worry about Cavalry. They’ve gotta do what they’ve gotta do, but we’ve gotta do what we’ve gotta do. For me, the biggest focus is ‘what do we need to do to get victories?'” — Pacific FC head coach Pa-Modou Kah

    Match Preview | #DCvMIN - DC United

D.C. United are set to play against Minnesota United FC in their 27th match of the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) Regular Season on Wednesday, September 29, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET. D.C. United will seek to maintain their dominance at home after recording their ninth win at Audi Field in 2021 on Saturday.

In their last match, D.C. United won 4-2 against FC Cincinnati. The Black-and-Red had a strong attacking performance that allowed them to maintain their unbeaten streak against Cincinnati. Julian Gressel was a key factor in the win after recording three assists in the game. In the seventh minute, Paul Arriola scored his first of the night from a corner kick routine to open the scoring. In the 21st minute, Gressel found Steven Birnbaum on a set piece and his header beat the Cincinnati keeper. Arriola secured his brace in the 41st minute when he rifled home his shot after a deflected cross from Gressel found him alone at the back post.

After three substitutions at halftime, the Black-and-Red started the second half with the same intensity. D.C. United scored their fourth goal of the evening in the 72nd minute by Nigel Robertha to take their lead to 4-0. In the final 10 minutes, United conceded two goals from Brandon Vázquez and former midfielder Luciano Acosta to give Cincinnati hope but Bill Hamid and the defense made some important defensive plays to preserve the two-goal cushion and get a critical three-points

D.C. United have an all-time record of 1-2-0 against Minnesota United FC. The last time these two teams played was on April 28, 2019, at Allianz Field, in an evenly fought match, where Minnesota ended up winning 1-0 with a goal at the 82nd minute by Minnesota’s ex-forward Ángelo Rodríguez.

Head Coach Hernán Losada on the Upcoming Match:

“When we play at home, it's a nice atmosphere. The connection between us and the fans is amazing, and we're going to need it. I hope we can have a lot of fans on Wednesday night. I know it's not easy, that people need to wake up early the day after, but it's going to be very important for us. The more fans we have, the more energy we have to win the game.”

D.C. United’s next match is at Exploria Stadium against Orlando City on Saturday, October 2, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Tune into NBC Sports Washington Plus, TeleXitos, and www.dcunited.com to watch the match.

Overwatch League Grand Finals Match Sets New Viewership Record - Forbes

The 2021 Overwatch League wrapped up this past weekend, after a terrific few days of playoffs followed by the Grand Finals. Shanghai Dragons beat Atlanta Reign 4-0 to secure their first championship. As it turns out, they did so in front of the largest OWL audience yet.

The 2021 Grand Finals matchup now holds the record as the most-watched Overwatch League match of all time, according to viewership stats that the league shared with me. OWL uses a metric called average minute audience, or AMA, which is the average number of people watching the broadcast at any given minute.

Shanghai’s sweep of Atlanta had a global AMA of 1.68 million, which is an 8% increase from the 2020 Grand Finals. Until now, that was the most-watched OWL match ever. Global AMA figures for Grand Finals have increased every year since the inaugural season in 2018.

On YouTube, there was an AMA of 218,000. That marked a 36% increase from last year’s Grand Finals. The Overwatch League told me that’s the highest figures it has seen on YouTube to date (OWL broadcasts were on Twitch for the first two seasons).

In China, Grand Finals viewership increased by 5%. That’s an impressive bump, given that Chinese fans were watching in the morning. The 2020 Grand Finals match was in primetime in that part of the world. Having a popular team from the country go a couple of steps further than they did last year surely bolstered Chinese viewership.

It’s also worth noting that OWL broadcasts streamed exclusively on Bilibili in China this season. In the past, fans there were able to watch on multiple platforms.

The record-setting broadcast capped off a great year for OWL, which had a terrific season despite a number of external factors weighing against it. Global viewership also increased for the tournaments, compared with last year (save for June Joust, which was new in 2021).

The Grand Finals closed the first major chapter in the history of competitive Overwatch. When the 2022 Overwatch League season starts, it will be on an early build of Overwatch 2. Hitting a new viewership high is a heck of a way for the league to say goodbye to Overwatch 1 (and 2CP).
