2022 WWE WrestleMania 38 Night 2 predictions, card, matches, start time, PPV preview, date, location - CBS Sports

WWE

The second night of this weekend's two-night WrestleMania from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas features what WWE is billing as "the biggest WrestleMania match of all time" as WWE champion Brock Lesnar clashes with universal champion Roman Reigns to unify the two world titles.

The second night of WrestleMania also features two all-time greats facing off for the first time as Edge and AJ Styles clash. The two have gone at it for weeks with Edge increasingly losing his mind ahead of the matchup. There will also be no shortage of celebrity inclusion on Sunday as "Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville will also make his singles match debut, taking on WWE superstar Sami Zayn. Plus, former NFL punter and current SmackDown commentator Pat McAfee will battle Austin Theory.

Let's take a closer look at who our CBS Sports experts predict will come out on top at Night 2 of WWE WrestleMania 38, which begins at 8 p.m. on Sunday and streams live on Peacock following a kickoff show one hour earlier.

2022 WWE WrestleMania 38 Night 2 predictions

Women's Tag Team Championship -- Queen Zelina & Carmella (c) vs. Sasha Banks & Naomi vs. Rhea Ripley & Liv Morgan vs. Natalya & Shayna Baszler

While this is certainly a collection of thrown-together teams chasing after a title that Zelina and Carmella won in November and have only defended once (in January), it's nice to see more people get their chance to participate in WrestleMania. Zelina and Carmella's act has been run into the ground with every match coming down to Carmella being distracted by Corey Graves at ringside because now that they have a YouTube reality show, their relationship suddenly matters on-screen. That means the most likely moves are either WWE keeps the team strapped up to promote the show or they move on by splitting the team and having them feud. I'll go with the latter and a chance for a Banks and Naomi to play champions. Pick: Sasha Banks & Naomi win the titles -- Brent Brookhouse

The four-way match for the titles came together abruptly. New tag teams were formed week after week in order to fill out the match. The stronger players, both in terms of name value and momentum, are clearly Sasha Banks and Naomi. They were the first duo to campaign for the title shot and they should leave Sunday with gold around their waists. Pick: Sasha Banks & Naomi win the titles -- Shakiel Mahjouri

Johnny Knoxville vs. Sami Zayn

WWE is very good at working celebrities through a match. Aside from Tyson Fury, it's hard to remember any recent celebrity matches that haven't led to big "Wow! Can you believe it?" reactions. With that in mind, expect Zayn vs. Knoxville to be a fun ride while it lasts. Zayn is exactly the right kind of heel to lose this match and have that loss be a benefit in building him up. Zayn thrives on having been "wronged" or embarrassed and losing to the stunt joke guy fits right in. It's undeniably the right move to have Knoxville get the win. Pick: Johnny Knoxville wins -- Brookhouse

You would hope that WWE would not go so far as to have a quality superstar like Zayn take the L for "Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville. The no-disqualification stipulation should present opportunities for run-ins and fun stunts from other stars from the film franchise. At present, Knoxville has not endeared himself to the roster and Zayn is not in any other feuds, so a superstar run-in seems unlikely. Maybe WWE surprises everyone with a fun cameo to aid Knoxville, but Zayn really should win this. Pick: Sami Zayn wins -- Mahjouri

Bobby Lashley vs. Omos

WWE has booked themselves into something of a no-win situation here. Lashley is returning from several months on the sidelines and his return should result in a win. Omos has been unstoppable as a singles star and that aura takes a massive hit when he suffers his first loss. So, where do you go? Tank Lashley's momentum on his return or cut Omos' monster heel run off at the knees. If there's any out here, it may be in finding the cheapest way for Lashley to lose, which could come down to MVP turning on him and moving on to manage Omos. That would benefit the monster by giving him someone who can work the mic and extend the program with Lashley for a while. Pick: Omos wins -- Brookhouse

WWE obviously has high hopes for Omos, but he is still a work in progress. It's believable enough to give him wins over meaningful opposition like AJ Styles considering the size difference. He won't have that benefit against fellow heavyweight Lashley. "The Almighty" is coming off a recent WWE championship reign, has a winning MMA record and muscles for days. Having Omos go over would be a disservice to Lashley, but that doesn't mean the former basketball player can't look good en route to a loss. Pick: Bobby Lashley wins -- Mahjouri

Pat McAfee vs. Austin Theory

McAfee has shown that he can wrestle shockingly well in multiple matches in NXT. Theory is a talented wrestler but he isn't exactly Adam Cole, so it wouldn't be surprising if this were a minor step down overall from those past McAfee matches. Still, WWE has fully bought in on Theory, from having him taken under Vince McMahon's wing to a spot in Elimination Chamber and now a featured WrestleMania spot. That should mean a win for the guy who will be wrestling every Monday night. Pick: Austin Theory wins -- Brookhouse

McAfee is so beloved by fans that it's hard to see him losing to Austin Theory, who has plenty of time in his career to recover from a loss to a pro-athlete-turned-commentator. McAfee proved he has wrestling chops in a pair of matches with Adam Cole that defied expectations. Maybe the promotion is building towards a longer program involving McMahon -- who is expected to be in Theory's corner -- and McAfee but, assuming that's not the case, I'll pick McAfee to win. Pick: Pat McAfee wins -- Mahjouri

Raw Tag Team Championship -- RK-Bro (c) vs. The Street Profits vs. Alpha Academy

The talk since RK-Bro began their run has been that Randy Orton and Riddle will have to split and feud. That's probably true given that WWE loves to split up tag teams. As entertaining as RK-Bro is as an act, you get the sense that WWE is getting antsy to break them up for a less entertaining feud. That Orton has come to fully embrace Riddle as being his friend is probably a sign the team is doomed. Losing the titles on the big stage could certainly kick off that story and Alpha Academy are the more entertaining team to run forward as champs. Pick: Alpha Academy win the titles -- Brookhouse

Alpha Academy should have been afforded the opportunity for a longer Raw Tag Team title run, but Orton and Riddle were quick to reclaim their crowns. As a consequence, they will likely leave WrestleMania as champions while continuing the build to an eventual split and feud. Pick: RK-Bro retain the titles -- Mahjouri

Edge vs. AJ Styles

The Edge we've seen dropping promos straight out of a late 1990s e-fed has been the low point of Edge's return. WWE has largely followed the same pattern with Edge rivalries since his return -- stretching things out over a string of two or three matches. With that in mind, it's unlikely that the story between Styles and Edge ends with just one match, even if it manages to steal the show at WrestleMania. With that in mind, it may make more sense for Edge to take the win. Pick: Edge wins -- Brookhouse

This one is a toss-up. Edge has pulled most of the weight in building this rivalry. An argument can be made that Styles should get the rub from Edge, but "The Rated R Superstar" could benefit from the momentum as well. Taking a look at my other predictions for WrestleMania Night 1, a villain needs to come out on top. I'll side with Edge, hesitantly, but am rather confident that this will be Match of the Night. Pick: Edge wins -- Mahjouri

Title vs. Title -- Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Roman Reigns (c)

Given that Lesnar is 2-0 against Reigns in WrestleMania main events, it certainly would make sense for Reigns to get the win here, just like his cousin Dwayne finally getting his win over Steve Austin in their third WrestleMania clash. Still, my internal bias is overriding logic. The Reigns championship reign is completely stalled out. The momentum was gone months and months ago and no amount of Reigns cutting the same stale promo is fixing it. The only way to get his momentum back is to end his run as the unbeatable champion. Reigns can get his win over Lesnar down the road in the inevitable fourth Lesnar vs. Reigns WrestleMania main event. Pick: Brock Lesnar unifies the titles -- Brookhouse

This is very much a toss-up. A case can be made for either man to leave WrestleMania as undisputed champion. Lesnar is the most believable threat to Reigns' record-setting run and is overdue for payback. Reigns is a full-time performer for WWE on the best run of his career, despite moments of staleness. WWE should build a contender that can really benefit from dethroning Reigns. That contender is nowhere in sight. While that may invoke more confidence in Lesnar, I hold out hope that WWE sees the value in keeping Reigns on top as they build towards new challengers. Pick: Roman Reigns unifies the titles -- Mahjouri

Toronto FC 2, New York City FC 1 | 2022 MLS Match Recap - Toronto FC

New York started the game on the front foot, but it was Toronto who opened the scoring against the run of play. After a nice bit of build-up play, Canadian international Jonathan Osorio slipped through Jesús Jiménez and the Spanish striker calmly rolled the ball into the far corner, scoring his third goal of the year.

12 minutes later, Brazilian defender Thiago Martins inadvertently headed an Alejandro Pozuelo free kick into his own goal to double the home side's lead just before half. Héber scored a header in injury time to draw NYCFC back to within one, but it was too little too late.

World Cup 2022 Group A draw: Qatar, Netherlands, Senegal, Ecuador match schedule & fixtures - Sporting News

Group A in the FIFA World Cup is set, and host nation Qatar will be left ruing its luck given the names that emerged from the three other pots.

Despite being ranked No. 51, Qatar were included with the top-seeded teams in Pot 1 as is customary for host nations at FIFA World Cup events. The hosts were also automatically added to Group A, as is also tradition.

Then came the teams from the other groups: Behind the hosts are the Netherlands, who missed the last World Cup but are back and fielding a strong team. Also in the group are Senegal, the AFCON 2022 champions, making this a difficult draw for the hosts. And finally, Ecuador were drawn from Pot 4 to round out the group.

By FIFA rankings, Qatar drew the 2nd toughest Pot 2 team, the toughest Pot 3 team, and the second-toughest Pot 4 team. Brutal!

WORLD CUP DRAW BREAKDOWNS:
Group A | Group B | Group C | Group D
Group E | Group F | Group G | Group H

For the two teams that advance from Group A, they would match up with a team from Group B in the Round of 16.

The four teams selected into the group will play a round-robin format with each nation facing the other three. Group standings are based on points from those three group-stage matches — three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a loss.

The top two teams from each group based on total points advance to the single-game knockouts. If teams are tied on points, goal difference is the first tiebreaker followed by goals scored. If teams are also tied in those categories another set of tiebreakers is applied

World Cup Group A draw

Qatar

As the 2022 World Cup host, Qatar is determined to put on a show for football fans around the globe, and that includes on the field.

The small Gulf nation with a population under three million has invested significantly in its national team program over the last decade since it won the right to host the tournament back in Dec. 2010. Since then, the cash outlay on player development, coaching and infrastructure has paid off with a No. 51 FIFA World Ranking, up from 112th. It also resulted in a first Asian Cup in 2019.

With ex-Barcelona youth coach Felix Sanchez leading the way since 2017, Qatar has developed an attack-minded, entertaining playing style which is sure to win over fans no matter how far they advance in its first World Cup appearance.

  • Current FIFA world ranking: No. 51 (March 2022)
  • Regional ranking: 5th (Asia)
  • World Cup titles:
  • World Cup appearances (last):
  • How qualified: Tournament host
  • Overall record (all competitions & friendlies):

    • 2021: 12W-7L-5D (Goals: 35 scored / 32 conceded)
  • Manager: Felix Sanchez (Spain) since July 2017
  • Star players: Akram Afif (Al-Sadd SC / Qatar), Almoez Ali (Al-Duhail SC / Qatar), Hassan Al-Haydos (Al-Sadd SC / Qatar)

Netherlands

Louis van Gaal — in his third spell in the Netherlands hot seat — will be hoping to use all of his experience to guide the Dutch to the latter stages of the World Cup in a first appearance at the finals in eight years.

Third-place finishers back in 2014, they did not make it to Russia last time out but their fortunes have improved since then, led by a new generation of talent that includes the likes of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Juventus’ Matthijs de Ligt.

Led from the back by Liverpool powerhouse Virgil van Dijk — who will be looking to cement his place as the best defender in the world — the Dutch won a qualification group that also included Turkey and Norway.

  • Current FIFA world ranking: No. 10 (March. 2022)
  • Regional ranking: 7th (UEFA)
  • World Cup titles:

  • Coach: Louis van Gaal (Netherlands) since August, 2021
  • Star players: Matthijs de Ligt (Juventus / Italy), Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool / England), Frenkie de Jong (Barcelona / Spain)

Senegal

Senegal did things the hard way to book their place at Qatar 2022 via a penalty shootout but will look to continue a recent excellent vein of form that has already seen the country crowned as the kings of Africa.

Having beaten Egypt once to claim a first AFCON title in February, Aliou Cisse’s side repeated that in the final round of African qualifying to ensure a spot in Qatar — albeit that match was controversial, as fans in the stadium aimed laser pointers at Egypt’s players during the penalty shootout to put them off.

That match proved to be another battle between two Liverpool talismans, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, and there is no doubt that the Senegalese hopes will largely rest with the latter man, as their primary attacking threat. But they also have some other world-class players to call on, including Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Senegal, interestingly, has the highest World Cup win percentage of any African nation in the field.

  • Current FIFA world ranking: No. 20 (March 2022)
  • Regional ranking: 1st (CAF)
  • World Cup titles:
  • World Cup appearances (last): 2 (Russia 2018)

    • 2021: 10W-1L-5D (Goals: 29 scored / 12 conceded)
  • Coach: Aliou Cisse (Senegal) since March, 2015
  • Star players: Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli / Italy), Edouard Mendy (Chelsea / England), Sadio Mane (Liverpool / England)

Ecuador

Ecuador went out in the quarterfinals of the last major tournament, the Copa America, as they were beaten 3-0 by eventual winners Argentina, and Gustavo Alfaro’s team will have to be much more resilient if they are to avoid an early exit from the World Cup.

Experienced forward Enner Valencia, who is his country’s all-time leading scorer with 35 goals, will have a significant part to play as Ecuador return to the world’s biggest stage after missing out on the 2018 tournament.

Villarreal defender Pervis Estupinan is another talented player, but the squad overall isn’t the strongest and may struggle to match some of their more illustrious group rivals.

  • Current FIFA world ranking: No. 46 (March 2022)
  • Regional ranking: 7th (CONMEBOL)
  • World Cup titles:
  • World Cup appearances (last): 3 (Brazil 2014)
  • How qualified: (CONMEBOL fourth place: 7W-6L-5D

  • Coach: Gustavo Alfaro (Argentina) since August, 2020
  • Star players: Enner Valencia (Fenerbahce / Turkey), Pervis Estupinan (Villarreal / Spain), Carlos Gruezo (Augsburg / Germany)

WWE WrestleMania 38 live results, match grades, highlights for Night 1 - Sporting News

After months of build-up, WrestleMania 38 weekend will begin on Saturday night in front of a massive crowd at AT&T Stadium.

Two of the top matches taking places will be Charlotte Flair defending the SmackDown Women's Title against Ronda Rousey. Rousey won the Royal Rumble this year and is ready to clash against Flair. Another top fight taking place is Becky Lynch defending the RAW Women's Title against Bianca Belair.

Heading into the first of two nights in Dallas, there are plenty of questions being asked and plenty of excitement surrounding the event.

Who will Seth Rollins' opponent be? Will the legendary "Stone Cold" Steve Austin compete in an official match? Who will walk out with both the Raw and SmackDown Women's Titles?

The Sporting News will have you covered throughout the event with live results, match grades, and highlights from Night 1.

Jake Paul makes appearance on Kickoff Show, promises to get in the ring

While there weren't any matches on this year's WrestleMania kickoff show, we did get an appearance from the one and only, Jake Paul.

With his brother Logan set for his official in-ring debut in Dallas - teaming with The Miz against Rey and Dominik Mysterio - Jake is of course in attendance to support.

And during an appearance on the pre-show panel, Jake hinted he may get in the ring TONIGHT at WrestleMania - but not before mouthing off at some members of the WWE Universe.

Will we see the social media phenomenon and boxer throw down at Mania? Only time will tell.

GRADE: N/A

The Usos (c) def. Rick Boogs/Shinsuke Nakamura for the Smackdown Tag Team Titles

After a hyped-up Mark Wahlberg gave us a spine-tingling WrestleMania intro and the Dallas Cowboys cheergirls kicked off proceedings, Rick Boogs opened things up with his trademark intro for Shinsuke Nakamura. Pat McAfee was fired up as always. The Usos strutted out and were dressed to the nines, as always.

Nakamura started hot but it wasn't long until the champs took control and cut off the former IC Champion. After trading kicks with Jimmy, Nakamura got the hot tag for Boogs and 'Main Event' Jay entered the match again.

Boogs showed off his impressive strength with a delayed suplex. He went to lift both Uso brothers, but his knee gave out and he got the tag to his partner Nakamura. It looked as though Boogs legit hurt his knee, as replays showed it clearly buckle underneath him. The Usos took control quickly after and while Nakamura was able to kick out of the superkick/splash combination, he couldn't stop the 1D and the champs retained.

Solid match, but probably not the right choice to open a WrestleMania. Boogs looks to be seriously injured, with doctors surrounding him after the match. The injury probably took away from the finish in the end, but the right team won without a doubt.

GRADE: C+

Drew McIntyre def. Happy Corbin

Drew got a pretty cool entrance here - well deserved considering his two big WrestleMania matches were affected due to COVID. McIntyre started off hot against Corbin, who was wrestling in a party shirt and white jeans - certainly a choice.

Madcap Moss got involved and allowed Corbin to take control soon after. Madcap got up on the apron and distracted his partner, giving Drew the upper-hand with a spinebuster. A nice belly-to-belly throw, a jumping neckbreaker and a kip-up from McIntyre got a few cheers from a quieter crowd. McIntyre went for the Claymore but Corbin countered into the Deep Six for a two-count.

McIntyre regathered and looked for the Claymore once again, but Corbin bailed. McIntyre hit an impressive dive over the top and took them both out. Corbin hit the End Of Days, which has been the finish of his matches fo his whole career - but McIntyre became the first man to kick out of it!!! That moment got the crowd going for a little bit.

Drew recovered again, hit the Future Shock DDT and a Claymore for the pinfall victory. After the match, Drew used his big sword and chopped the ropes in half. Ok then.

The match probably went a bit lot longer than it needed to and the crowd weren't really into it until the last couple of minutes. McIntyre kicking out of the End Of Days was a cool moment, but probably one we should have seen coming. Both men worked hard, but this one didn't quite click.

GRADE: C

Logan Paul/The Miz def. Rey & Dominik Mysterio

The Mysterios came out from underneath the stage, which was pretty dope. Logan Paul came out with a Pokemon card attached to the gold chain around his neck. According to Jimmy Smith, it's 1/1 and the most expensive in the world. This guy is a national treasure.

Logan got into the match early, throwing a few body shots at Rey in the corner. Dominik tagged in and flew around the ring and ringside area, taking it to The Miz. Paul snuck behind the ref's back and allowed their team to get the upper-hand for a little bit. Paul hit a nice running powerslam on Dominik, before hitting a picture-perfect blockbuster from the second-rope.

There was actually some pretty good tag team psychology from Paul/Miz, cutting off the ring and tagging in and out frequently. Dominik fought his way out eventually, getting the hot tag to his father and getting the crowd on their feet. Rey gained a couple of near-falls on Miz, before hitting a sweet tornado DDT and two of the signature 'Three Amigos', gaining a big "Eddie" chant from the crowd.

Paul was able to tag himself back into the match and managed to hit a 'Three Amigos' of his own, which was seriously impressive stuff in his first match. Paul then hit a frog-splash from the top rope for another near-fall. The Mysterios hit a double 619, but Miz tagged himself in and broke up the pin, before hitting a Skull-Crushing Finale on Rey for the win.

After the match, Miz turned on Paul and hit him with a Skull-Crushing Finale. Jake Paul did not come out, which was a little bit of a letdown.

This wasn't amazing by any means, but it was a lot better than perhaps anybody expected. Logan Paul was an absolute natural in the ring and produced a celebrity appearance for the ages, rivalling the likes of Bad Bunny and Pat McAfee. Both the Mysterios did their job well and Miz's turn opens the door for more Paul shenanigans moving forward. We're calling this match a success.

GRADE: B

Stephanie McMahon introduces Gable Steveson to WWE Universe

In-between matches, WWE's Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon came out to introduce Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson to the WrestleMania crowd.

He didn't do anything, but he got a bit ovation and his future in WWE is extremely bright.

Alec Baldwin’s ‘Match Game’ Canceled at ABC, Along With ‘Card Sharks’ and More as Network Firms Up Summer Plans (EXCLUSIVE) - Variety

The Alec Baldwin-hosted “Match Game” isn’t expected to return to ABC, as the Alphabet web begins to firm up its plans for its annual game show-heavy summer lineup.

Also unlikely to return are “Card Sharks,” “Celebrity Dating Game” and “The Hustler,” while “Celebrity Family Feud,” “Press Your Luck” and “The $100,000 Pyramid” are expected to be back.

The fate of “Match Game” had been the source of speculation in the wake of Baldwin’s accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the independent production “Rust” last fall.

But ABC’s decision to cancel “Match Game” is not related to that incident; “Match Game” hasn’t been in production since 2020, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic — and only aired two new episodes in 2021, which had been left over from the previous year.

The latest revival of “Match Game,” hosted by Baldwin, debuted in 2016, and ran for five seasons. The most recent season was shot before the pandemic began, with nine episodes spread out between May 31, 2000, and Oct. 29, 2000, and then the final two on July 21 and July 28, 2021.

Produced by Fremantle, “Match Game” centered on four contestants competing for $25,000 as they try to match the answers of six celebrities in a game of fill-in-the-blank. The format, which first premiered in 1962, hosted by Gene Rayburn, has been revived several times in the decades since then. Executive produced by showrunner Scott St. John and others, the ABC run produced approximately 69 episodes.

As for “Card Sharks,” hosted by Joel McHale, the revival ran for two seasons on ABC, most recently in July 2021. Also from Fremantle and showrunner St. John, “Card Sharks” features players trying to win a cash prize by wagering on the cards that are about to be flipped over. The format first debuted in 1978; the ABC edition aired 21 episodes starting in June 2019.

“Celebrity Dating Game,” hosted by Zooey Deschanel and Michael Bolton, aired for just one season in 2021. The show, which premiered last June, brought celebrities to the “Dating Game” format as they quiz potential suitors and the civilians try to guess the stars behind the wall. Bolton would also perform parodies and renditions of popular songs as clues for the contestants. Sony Pictures TV is behind the show.

Hosted by Craig Ferguson, “The Hustler” called itself “the most diabolical game on television.” Contestants would collaborate to answer questions and put money in a pot — but it turns out one of them is a mole who knows the answers and is trying to hide their identity and win the prize. Based on a British format, “The Hustler” came from All3Media’s Studio Lambert and ran for two seasons on ABC — first debuting on Jan. 7, 2021. A total of 19 episodes aired.

As for “Celebrity Family Feud,” hosted by Steve Harvey, the show is expected to be back for Season 8; “Press Your Luck,” hosted by Elizabeth Banks, will return for a fourth season; and “The $100,000 Pyramid,” hosted by Michael Strahan, comes back for Season 6. “Celebrity Family Feud” and “Press Your Luck” are from Fremantle, while “Pyramid” comes from Sony Pictures TV.

The shows join previously renewed “Holey Moley,” which is back with a fourth season featuring the Muppets; and a new edition of “The Chase.” Both of those shows, as well as new true crime mystery gamer “Who Do You Believe?” will make up a springtime night of unscripted fare on ABC starting Tuesday, May 3.

The news also comes as ABC recently confirmed that “The Ultimate Surfer” will not be returning. Still awaiting word of their fate are “Supermarket Sweep,” as well as current shows “Judge Steve Harvey” and “To Tell the Truth” and recent entries “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy National College Championship.”

The 2022 FIFA World Cup feels that much closer with the draw now officially out of the way. The group stage matchups are set and we can begin to project who might be in best position to advance from the knockouts.

The USA landed England in Group B, Mexico will go up against Argentina and Lionel Messi in Group C, and it'll be Luis Suarez and Uruguay looking to spoil the potential final World Cup tournament for Cristiano Ronaldo in Group H.

The tournament kicks off on Monday, Nov. 21 and will be wrapped up in less than a month with the final tabbed for Sunday, Dec. 18. Brazil enter as the No. 1 team in the world and have a manageable group, while defending champions France should finish top in their group with a chance to build a head of steam in the tournament.

Which teams could surprise? African champions Senegal are one of the stronger teams in Group A, which also features hosts Qatar. In their first participation in 37 years, Canada landed in Group F, where it will like its chances to battle Morocco and Croatia for second place behind Belgium.

World Cup 2022 tournament format

The 2022 World Cup tournament will follow along the lines of past editions with a 32-team group stage which whittles the field down to 16 teams — only the top two teams from each group will advance.

Those 16 survivors will then begin a single-game knockout competition. The winner moves on, the loser goes home. There must be a winner on the day and extra time and penalty kicks will be used, if necessary.

  • Group stage: Nov. 21-Dec. 2
  • Round of 16: Dec. 3-6
  • Quarterfinals: Dec. 9-10
  • Semifinals: Dec. 13-14
  • Third-place match: Dec. 17
  • Final: Dec. 18

When do World Cup matches start in Qatar?

There will be up to four matches daily during the group stage and they will be staggered throughout the day. The only matches that will overlap are the ones played on the final day of group stage play and that's purely for competitive integrity.

Every time zone in the world will get a chance to watch matches at decent times throughout the day. Here's a breakdown of how the local kickoff times in Qatar translate in regions around the world.
