Match Recap | #NYCvDC - DC United

D.C. United fell 2-1 away to New York City FC in their 11th match of the 2021 MLS Regular Season. United found the first goal early in the match, but were unable to hang on, as NYCFC scored two late goals to steal the points from the Black-and-Red and drop them to 4-6-1 with 13 accumulated points on the season.

D.C. United made five changes to the squad that played against CF Montréal on June 23. Bill Hamid started in goal with Donovan Pines, Frédéric Brillant, and Brendan Hines-Ike as the back three. Julian Gressel and Joseph Mora played as the wingbacks and Moses Nyeman, Russell Canouse, and Yamil Asad started in the center of the midfield. Nigel Robertha and Paul Arriola were partnered up-top as the two strikers.

United began the match on the front foot and found a goal in the 9th minute. Moses Nyeman collected the ball in the midfield and sent a 40 yard diagonal pass right onto the foot of Nigel Robertha, who took it in stride, cut onto his left foot to beat the defender and fired his shot into the roof of the net. The goal was Robertha’s first for D.C. United and the assist for Nyeman was his second of the season. Bill Hamid made his best save of the night in the 26th minute when he denied a clear one-on-one opportunity for New York City from in-close. United went into the break leading 1-0.

The back-and-forth, high-paced match continued in the second half. Hamid’s first test of the second half came in the 62nd as his reactions were put to the task after not being able to see the attempt on goal until the last second. Shortly after, Russell Canouse found space at the top of the box, but his side-footed effort was saved by the NYCFC goalkeeper. New York City found the equalizing goal in the 85th minute when Keaton Parks scored a glancing header off a corner kick. United almost regained the lead in the 89th minute when Paul Arriola’s left-footed curling effort flew just wide of the left post. In the final stages of added time, the Black-and-Red nearly found the winner following a corner kick, as Arriola’s effort from in-close was parried away by New York City’s keeper. Following the save, the hosts quickly countered and scored their second of the night after a surging individual run down the right side of the pitch.

D.C. United’s next match is back home at Audi Field against Toronto FC on Saturday, July 3. Tune into NBC Sports Washington, TeleXitos, and www.dcunited.com to watch the match.

Belgium 1-0 Portugal match reaction - PortuGOAL.net

Just like in the 2018 World Cup, Portugal’s participation in the big summer football bonanza finishes with a frustrating round-of-16 exit.

Unlike in Russia though, there was a palpable sense that the Seleção deserved more than they got, but ultimately they were unable to recover from Thorgan Hazard’s first-half goal.

“They scored, we didn’t,” was one of Fernando Santos’ simple but succint comments after the match, while several players lamented Portugal’s lack of luck. PortuGOAL rounds up the reactions from Seville.

Fernando Santos, Portugal manager:

“It’s a huge disappointment because we believed we could win the tournament like in 2016. There are players crying in the changing room. They gave it everything. Belgium had 6 shots, scored from one, we had 29, hit the post. But a defeat is a defeat. I sincerely don’t have much to say. It’s not a question of justice or injustice. They scored a goal, we didn’t.

“We have to lift our heads because we played a tremendous game. The ball hit the post – it didn’t want to go in. The players gave everything. Portugal deserved to win and that’s why we are sad.

“We tried everything. We tried attacking from wide, from inside, putting more men in the box, but the ball hit the post, from another chance the ball went straight at their goalkeeper. That’s football, there’s nothing you can do about it.

“In 2018 we were knocked out of the World Cup in the last-16 and the year after we won the Nations League. We have to look ahead to go and win the World Cup.”

Portugal out of Euro 2020: Belgium 1-0 Portugal match report

Rúben Dias, Portugal defender:

“I wouldn’t say our game plan failed. I’d actually say the game plan made us comfortable and feel superior on the pitch. We were always close to scoring. Even in the first half in an extremely tight game. They scored from one shot in the first half, when they had a bit of luck because of the strange way the ball moved.

“We were close to scoring several times, but the ball didn’t want to go in for us. The only thing to take from this game is that it’s a lesson to come back stronger. The second half was all ours. The result just didn’t go for us. Thank you to the Portuguese for all the fantastic support.”

Raphaël Guerreiro, Portugal defender:

“We’re disappointed because our opponents only had one chance and scored from it. We lacked a bit of luck. We played a good game but the only thing that mattered was the victory. We had to react after going down, we played a great second half, but we lacked a bit of luck. We left everything we had on the pitch.”

Danilo, Portugal defender:

“We had very good moments when we managed to pass the ball in the attacking third. I think we needed to create more danger. When we managed to, we hit the post. Belgium scored a goal which gave them a big boost, and they defended well.

“We weren’t expecting to get knocked out so early in the competition. We tried our best to equalise as you saw at the end of the game. We weren’t effective and we were unlucky with hitting the post. It’s tough going out like this in the last 16. We could have gone further. Life goes on. Now we have to think about the World cup and qualifying.”

João Palhinha, Portugal midfielder:

“We created more chances than Belgium. In the first half we managed to control the game well. I can’t remember any other chance for Belgium apart from the goal which was like pulling a rabbit out of the hat. There you have it. It’s with a lot of bad luck that we’re going back to Portugal. In the second half we knew we had to give it everything. We had clear chances to score but we didn’t manage to. Belgium had that bit of luck.

“Although we are a small country, we have a lot of quality in all areas. Football is no different. The fact we have been European champions and won the Nations League translates the value of this team. You can’t always win. We fought to the end and gave it our all. Today we lacked a bit of luck. A victory for us would have been completely fair.”

Roberto Martínez, Belgium manager:

“In the first half we played very well, controlled the game and scored a great goal. In the second half Portugal took the initiative, attacked us and we had to show maximum commitment. We never lost concentration, despite Portugal pushing hard at the end for the draw. I couldn’t be prouder of my players.

“It was the toughest test we’ve had at this European Championship. We weren’t as good as we could have been but Portugal have an incredible team.”

Match Analysis: Cavalry FC 2-1 York United – Canadian Premier League - Canadian Premier League

Final Score: Cavalry FC 2-1 York United
Goalscorers: Sergio Camargo (32′), José Escalante (51′), Diyaeddine Abzi (79′)
Game of the 2021 season: 4
CPL match: 139

Match in a minute or less

Cavalry took the spoils in the final match of the CPL’s opening weekend, with a superb Sergio Camargo headed goal and a sneaky effort from José Escalante to cause a defensive error ultimately enough to secure the 2-1 win. A late surge from York United — including a brilliant free kick goal from Diyaeddine Abzi — made it a heated contest right down to the final whistle, but the Nine Stripes couldn’t solve Cavalry’s defence to find an equalizer.

Three observations

Cavalry dominates out wide

Fans of Cavalry FC will have been delighted to see Escalante and Camargo return to the lineup together on Sunday, and their presence on opposite wings reminded us all how sorely they were missed at the Island Games (save for the two games Camargo played). The two players were a major handful for York on the outside, and with both teams playing the ball out wide more than 75 percent of the time, this game was always going to be decided by who won the battle on the flanks.

Escalante and Camargo both dominated in duels and were lethal when cutting inside with the ball. Cavalry’s ability to spread the ball to both wings really stretched the York backline and forced them not to cheat to one side — a tip of the hat to young Victor Loturi, who didn’t miss a single pass in 60 minutes, one of which was a phenomenal switch of play (Tommy Wheeldon Jr. called it a “spray can” of a pass) to Escalante before the first Cavs goal.

Mo Farsi and Richard Luca were both able to carry the torch out wide as well, with Farsi well-known as one of the league’s most skillful players around the touchline area. Cavalry’s repeated cycling of the ball from midfield out to wingers, paired with those wingers’ dynamism from the wide areas, will make them extremely dangerous in attack this year. Sergio Camargo, whose goal was a product of that wide play, explained that it was exactly the kind of play the team had spoken about in training — making sure both wingers are aware of when the other is making a run inside.

“I told [Escalante], if either one of us is cutting in, just be aware of that,” Camargo said. “It worked out perfectly.”

York not yet in sync in attacking third

As the club perhaps hardest-hit by the lack of training time leading into the season — Ontario’s COVID-19 restrictions coupled with major roster turnover — York understandably needed time to grow into this game. They certainly did settle in, although by the time they started seeing good stretches of possession they were already down 2-0.

This side had quite a few individual bright spots in attack; Diyaeddine Abzi, traditionally a fullback, moved up to play as a left winger, and he was able to do some real damage with his pace and footwork. He made three good crosses and had three shots on target of his own (one of which, a free kick, found the net). Lowell Wright, playing as the centre-forward, moved well away from the ball and looked aggressive in his runs into the box, but he never quite managed to get a dangerous shot off from Abzi’s crosses.

York continued to be plagued by similar open-play woes that hurt them in 2020. Though they saw plenty of time in the attacking third, final balls and finishing continued to elude; head coach Jimmy Brennan shifted his team’s formation a few times during the game to try and open up space — starting with a 4-4-1-1, he moved into a 4-2-3-1 and, eventually, a 4-3-3 right at the end to get Abzi, as well as substitutes Alvaro Rivero and Osvaldo Ramirez, further up the pitch to put more pressure on Cavalry’s fullbacks.

“We knew the higher up we got Abzi, the more he would create chances and opportunities,” Brennan said after the game.

Attacking chemistry takes a while to develop, which is why York weren’t necessarily on the same page up front, but the individual performances and talent suggest this team should be dangerous going forward once they start clicking together.

Physicality favours Cavalry

This was by far the most physical of the games we’ve seen so far at The Kickoff, with 115 total duels and 37 fouls across both teams. In the second half in particular, these sides did not shy away from contact, with possession changing frequently thanks to some crunching midfield tackles. Cavalry’s deployment of Joe Di Chiara at the 60-minute mark certainly had something to do with it — the former York midfielder had no qualms with challenging his ex-teammates, holding off opponents with his body and sliding in to win the ball.

Cavalry has always played with a bite in the previous two CPL seasons, but Di Chiara’s addition should make them even more taxing to play against. Especially in the early going of the season, with some teams not quite at peak sharpness, Cavalry’s ability to frustrate opponents and win the physical battles will be a major boon in close contests — with York pushing for an equalizer toward the end of this one, the Cavs did well to make life uncomfortable in midfield.

That said, Tommy Wheeldon Jr. doesn’t expect the physicality to be a trademark of his side all the time: “We would prefer to do what we did for the first 60 minutes where we moved the ball around very, very well,” he told reporters postmatch. “It started to get more physical, they were chasing the win, we were holding onto it, and that’s why. If it gets physical, we can stand up to the best of them, but we prefer not to get into that combat.”

CanPL.ca Player of the Match

José Escalante, Cavalry FC

Incredible attacking initiative all afternoon, bagging a superb assist and a goal of his own while causing plenty of trouble for York’s defenders on the wing. The Canadian Premier League is more fun with the dynamic Honduran winger back in it.

What’s next?

Cavalry FC move on now to play Atlético Ottawa on Wednesday, June 30 (10 pm ET/9 pm CT); York United, meanwhile, will play Pacific FC the next afternoon on Canada Day (5 pm ET/4 pm CT). Watch all games live on OneSoccer.

Something about this match line feels off. Belgium have played better overall in this tournament. They’re the #1 ranked team in the world. And Portugal has only looked good in spurts and when Ronaldo hits a pk. But the line makes me think Portugal is winning.

MATCH RECAP: 2-2 draw with Cascadia rival Vancouver keeps Sounders FC unbeaten in 2021 - SoundersFC.com

In a back-and-forth Cascadia clash, Sounders FC (7-0-4, 25 points) drew 2-2 with longtime rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2-6-2, 8 points) on Saturday evening at Lumen Field. Raúl Ruidíaz and Jimmy Medranda scored for Seattle, extending the Rave Green’s unbeaten run to 11 games, as the club remains in first place in the Western Conference and the Supporters’ Shield race. In the club’s second home match in four days, 25,603 took in the contest at Lumen Field, the biggest audience of 2021 as the club continues to add capacity via its evolving COVID-19 protocols.

Seattle took a 1-0 first-half lead courtesy of Ruidíaz’s ninth goal of the season, currently second in the race for MLS Golden Boot. Josh Atencio began the play with a hard tackle to gain possession before feeding Will Bruin to lead the break. The ball found its way back to Atencio, who played Brad Smith down the left side of the 18-yard-box, resulting in a cross to Ruidíaz, who slotted it into the back of the net.

The visitors equalized minutes into the second half, as the Rave Green gave up their first goal from open play on the season, halting a league-record streak of 949 minutes. Caio Alexander played a long over-the-top ball into Seattle’s final third to Cristian Dájome, who got behind the defense and rounded Stefan Cleveland before rolling a shot into an empty net. Lucas Cavalini gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead seven minutes later, receiving a cross from Dájome and heading the ball down and into the net.

Medranda evened the score in the 71st minute for his first Sounders FC goal. Following a corner kick, the Colombian collected the initial clearance at the top of the area and smashed a shot through traffic into the back of Vancouver’s goal. It marked Medranda’s first MLS strike since April 20, 2018 while with Sporting Kansas City, also against Whitecaps FC.

After playing three matches in eight days, Seattle now has a full week to prepare for its next opponent, with the Rave Green heading to Colorado for an Independence Day showdown with the Rapids on July 4 (6:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, Prime Video, Sports Radio 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).

MATCH NOTES

  • In a rivalry dating back to 1974 in the original North American Soccer League, tonight’s matchup marked the 144th all-time contest between Sounders FC and Vancouver. In MLS regular-season play since 2011, Seattle moves to 15-7-6 all-time against Whitecaps FC.

  • Scoring in the 40th minute of play, forward Raúl Ruidíaz bagged his ninth goal of 2021, good for his 51st career MLS goal for the Rave Green (regular season and playoffs). The only other player to hit 50 goals or more in MLS regular season and postseason play is Clint Dempsey (53 goals), while Fredy Montero holds the all competitions club scoring record (62 goals).

  • Ruidíaz’s first-half goal gives him nine strikes so far in 2021, one behind the Galaxy’s Javier Hernández for first in MLS.

  • Returning from a right quad strain, Homegrown midfielder Josh Atencio made his first start for the Rave Green since April 24 vs. LAFC. The 19-year-old bagged his first career assist in the 40th minute of play, unlocking Vancouver’s defense with a deft through ball to an onrushing Brad Smith, who played the ball across the opposing area to Raúl Ruidíaz for the tap-in.

  • With the final ball on Ruidíaz’s opening goal, Brad Smith earned his second assist of 2021, tying him with two other players for second in assists on the roster (Will Bruin and Alex Roldan). In his Sounders FC career, Smith has nine regular-season assists.

  • Jimmy Medranda scored his first goal in over three years on Saturday night, striking a driven shot at the top of the eighteen-yard-box to level the score at two goals apiece. Medranda last scored in MLS on April 20, 2018 for Sporting KC, a match that was also against Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

  • After conceding the club’s first goal from open play of 2021 in the 49th minute, Seattle’s streak was halted at 949 consecutive minutes. Having allowed just seven goals all season, tonight’s goals from Vancouver were the first allowed from open play this year. Previously three goals came from penalties and another two from direct free kicks. Seattle had already set a new league record in this category, surpassing 2011 Real Salt Lake (803 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal from open play).

  • With the win, Seattle remains unbeaten in 2021. Through 11 matches, the club has seven wins and four draws, good for 25 points. Should the club win or draw its next match, it would tie the all-time MLS record. Four clubs have started a season unbeaten through 12 games. The last team to accomplish this feat was Real Salt Lake in 2014.

  • Following the win, Seattle remains atop both the Supporters’ Shield race and MLS Western Conference standings. The Rave Green lead Sporting Kansas City by two points in both sets of standings (the New England Revolution also have 23 points in the Eastern Conference).

  • Following Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over RSL, Head Coach Brian Schmetzer made two changes to tonight’s starting lineup against RSL: Brad Smith returned to his left wingback role for Jimmy Medranda, and Josh Atencio relieved Kelyn Rowe in central midfield.

  • Tonight’s Lumen Field crowd of 25,603 was the biggest audience to see a Sounders FC match since March 7, 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began. 24,652 watched Wednesday’s win over RSL under the club’s evolving COVID-19 protocols. Beginning with the club’s July 7 home match versus Houston, Sounders FC contests will be fully open once again.

Katona wins Ontario women's match play championship - Sherwood Park News

Tilbury’s Hailey Katona ousted two Ontario Golf Hall of Fame members en route to winning the Ontario women’s match play championship.

Hailey Katona of Tilbury, Ont., chips on to the 15th green during the third round of the Ontario junior girls' golf championship at Maple City Country Club in Chatham, Ont., on Wednesday, July 11, 2018. Mark Malone/Chatham Daily News/Postmedia Network

There’s an old adage that to be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.

Well, Tilbury’s Hailey Katona knocked off two Ontario Golf Hall of Fame members en route to winning the Ontario women’s match play championship.

Katona, 19, won four matches over two days to capture the title Friday at Taboo Muskoka Resort & Golf in Gravenhurst.

She won the final 6&4 over Ottawa’s Ashley Lafontaine, who has qualified for the United States Golf Association junior girls’ championship.

Her day began with a 4&3 semifinal win over Sadie Dewinton-Davies of Wales.

“I knew that I had to play well this morning if I wanted to get into the final match, and I did just that,” Katona said in a statement after winning her first Golf Ontario championship. “I didn’t get too far ahead of myself, I just stayed in the moment. Sadie is a great player and I knew that I needed to make birdies.

“In the final round, Ashley was amazing as well and during the last few holes, the rain started coming down harder on us, so that made it a little bit tougher.”

Katona started her first tournament at Taboo Muskoka by beating Etobicoke’s Terrill Samuel 5&4 in the round of 16 on Thursday. Then she defeated another legend, Thornhill’s Judith Kyrinis, 3&2 in a quarter-final.

Samuel and Kyrinis are Ontario Golf Hall of Fame members who have combined to win more than a dozen Ontario titles and 10 Canadian championships. Kyrinis also beat Samuel in the final match of the 2017 USGA senior women’s amateur championship.

“They are amazing people and unbelievable players, so kind and just amazing women overall,” Katona said. “I’m so honoured that I was able to play with them and meet them.”

Katona, a Tilbury Golf Club member, began her college career this past season at Georgia Southern University. She played in two tournaments and posted a pair of top-25 results in the fall. She was also named to the dean’s list in the spring.

She has transferred to Mercer University, another NCAA Division I school in Georgia.

The Tilbury District High School graduate won the 2018 OFSAA championship and played three years with Team Ontario.

Katona is scheduled to play in the Alberta ladies amateur championship July 13-15 in Edmonton. Her calendar this summer also includes the Ontario and Canadian women’s amateur championships.
