The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is expected to advise provincial and territorial governments they can change their guidelines on mixing and matching second doses of covid vaccines.
It says combining Astra Zeneca, Moderna and Pfizer vaccines is fine in certain circumstances.
For instance, NACI says the first shot of Astra Zeneca can be followed up with either Moderna or Pfizer, and that Pfizer and Moderna are interchangeable if the same first dose is unavailable or unknown.
It bases the recommendation on emerging research from the UK and Spain that has found mixing and matching is both safe and effective at preventing the virus.
The updated guidelines follows coms as some provinces have already combined different shots due to issues with the supply of AstraZeneca and a rare but serious type of blood clot that can result after the shot.
