Denmark soccer player Christian Eriksen stable in hospital after collapsing during match - Global News

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen has been taken to hospital where he “has been stabilised” after collapsing during a match against Finland at the European Championship, The Union of European Football Associations says.

In a tweet, the UEFA said a “crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials” adding that “more information will be communicated” at 1:45 ET.

Eriksen collapsed near the end of the first half of the match Saturday. Medical staff attended to him as his team stood around him creating a shield for privacy.

He was ultimately removed from the pitch on a stretcher after about 10 minutes of receiving treatment.

The Finland players huddled by their bench and eventually walked off the field while Eriksen was still getting treatment. Eriksen was carried off to a loud ovation.

It was not immediately clear why Eriksen collapsed.

The Danish Federation confirmed on Twitter that Eriksen is “awake” and undergoing further examination.

The match, which was nearing the end of the first half when it was suspended, will restart at 8:30 local time.

“The last four minutes of the first half will be played, there will then be a 5-minute half-time break followed by the second half,” the UEFA said in a tweet.

The association said it wishes Eriksen a “full and speedy recovery and wishes to thank both teams for their exemplary attitude.”

In a tweet Saturday afternoon, Canada Soccer shared its support for Erikson.

“The thoughts of everyone at Canada Soccer are with Christian Eriksen, his family, teammates and all those in the Danish & extended football family,” the post read.

The Finland national team tweeted, saying the thoughts of the men’s team, “the Football Association of Finland, and the Finnish footballing family are with Eriksen, his loved ones and the Danish team.”

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said moments like these “put everything in life into perspective.”

“I wish Christian a full and speedy recovery and pray his family has strength and faith… I heard fans of both teams chanting his name,” he said. “Football is beautiful and Christian plays it beautifully.”
