69’—Uhhhh, that’s a penalty. Alphonso Davies finds Jonathan David in the box, who makes a move, but is taken down. Referee not having any of it. I really thought that was a pen.

I can't blame Herdman for going with the most boring 5-3-2 I've ever seen given Canada's history in "only need a draw!" World Cup qualifiers, but... woof. This game has not been a ton of fun to watch.

54’—Crucial touch defensively by Eustaquio. Suriname almost had a 2 on 0 if it weren’t for the Canadian midfielder.
52’—CHANCE! After Alphonso Davies is sprung once again down the left-hand side, he swings a misplaced ball into the box right into Hahn, but the Suriname keeper spills it! Cyle Larin, who had already run past the play, turns back and gets off a spinning shot, but his attempt is saved by Hahn, who collects and calms play down. That was almost a howler.
46’—We’re back for the second half. Expect more space this 45 as Suriname will need to score at least two goals if they want any chance of advancing.
HT: Canada 1-0 Suriname—Canada head into the break with the lead! Not the greatest 45 for the Canadians, but they’ll be happy carrying the lead into the second half.

44’—Final warning for Suriname fullback Haps, who has clattered Laryea on a number of occasions. He’s already on a yellow - next time, he’s off.
39’—Davies down injured after the goal, receiving treatment on the sideline. He received a shoulder to the head as the Suriname defender tried to track back and make a desperate tackle. He seems to be alright though. Wow, another massive game, another massive moment for Alphonso Davies.

36’—After a fast start, the pace has really slowed down in this match. I know Suriname have to win, but in a way, the longer this match goes scoreless, it may just be better for Suriname.
31’—A darting run forward by Richie Laryea is picked out by Alistair Johnston, and the TFC fullback does well to cut it back quickly to Jonathan David, who elects to shoot, but he once again can’t find the power. Easy save for the Suriname keeper Hahn.
29’—So... I predicted a 5-1 scoreline & I don’t think we’re going to be seeing that. Still scoreless here, as shots are 5-5 right now. Again, Canada very much dictating play, but Suriname are no pushovers. Are the nerves setting in yet for you all?
25’—Fun Fact: Cyle Larin & Richie Laryea were like best friends growing up. Must be cool for them to play in a match like this together.
22’—David with another half-chance, collecting the ball after a free-kick was cleared, taking his defender on 1v1 before trying to bend a ball far post, but he’s unable to wrap his foot around it well enough and the keeper saves comfortably. Canada still very much dictating play, but they shouldn’t get too comfortable. This Suriname team can strike at any time.
18’—CHANCE! Jonathan David is sprung in alone, but his shot is stopped! The rebound bounces to Richie Laryea, who has a go from outside the box, but he hits the POST! So. Close.

15’—Cyle Larin forces a mistake out of a Suriname defender which leads to Davies being sprung down the left-wing. He cuts it inside for Jonathan David, but his touch lets him down. A tough chance for David, but Canada showing a bit of life after just nearly conceding.
13’—CHANCE! Suriname almost open the scoring! The ball bounces at the top of the Canadian box to Suriname right winger Becker, who strikes a bullet first time off the crossbar and just out! Wow, that was close.
11’—Canada dictating the pace of play early on, but Suriname don’t look like they’ll be an easy side to break down. You can tell that their opponent this evening are easily the toughest side that the Canadians have faced in this qualifying campaign so far.
8’—Great bit of build-up play by Canada, highlighted by a eye-opening forward pass from Eustaquio to break a few lines. Cyle Larin turns and puts a shot right on, but no trouble for the Suriname keeper. While I’m typing this, Richie Laryea getting into it a bit with the Suriname attacker down his flank. We know Laryea doesn’t take any nonsense from anybody.
3’—Alphonso Davies is a superstar. He does really well to keep the ball on his own a couple of ocassions in the middle of the park. Great to see him playing with some confidence.

8:56 pm EST—I also don’t think it’s a stretch to say that this is Canada’s best shot at qualifying for a World Cup since...well, certainly as long as I can remember.
8:53 pm EST—As KJ just mentioned on the OneSoccer broadcast, Canada’s men haven’t come from behind to win a match since 2007(!). It’s been smooth sailing for the past year or so, which is why tonight’s game vs. Suriname is so exciting: it should be the first real challenge for Canada since Nations League matches against the United States late 2019.

8:26 pm EST—For TFC fans tuning in, it’s great to see Jonathan Osorio starting for Canada. He’s played less than 90 minutes in MLS so far this season due to injuries, so it’s a positive sign that he’s healthy and good to go this evening. I don’t expect him to play longer than 50-60 minutes, if that.

Canada will have their first real test of World Cup Qualifying against Suriname this evening, and the scenario is simple: win or draw and the Canadians are through to the next stage. Lose? The Canadian men’s national team are just 90 minutes away from a place in the second of FIFA World Cup Qualifying and will just need to ensure they do not lose to Suriname in order to progress. Both nations are level on nine points after three wins from three, but Canada are seven clear on goal difference, a major advantage in the context of this fixture.
Kickoff is set for 9:05 p.m. EST at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois. The game will be available to stream on OneSoccer.
Comprehensive victories over Bermuda (5-1), the Cayman Islands (11-0) and Aruba (7-0) have given Canada the upper hand with regards to who will advance to the second round from Group B. Suriname have matched Canada’s 3-0-0 record following a 3-0 win against the Cayman Islands and two 6-0 victories over Aruba and Bermuda respectively.
Ultimately, If Canada win or draw, the Reds will progress, but if Suriname triumph by any scoreline, they will move on to the next round and Canada’s WCQ campaign will come to an end. It’s totally in Canada’s hands now, but John Herdman will surely be wary of Suriname’s dynamic style of play.
The eventual winner of Group B will face either Haiti or Nicaragua in the second round, which will be in the form of a two-legged tie.
Suriname have scored 15 goals in three games and have also yet to concede a single goal. Their man-in-form is surely none other than Nigel Hasselbaink, the nephew of English Premier League legend Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink. The 30-year-old has scored hat-tricks in his last two games for his country, including one this past weekend against Bermuda. He currently leads the overall first round scoring charts with six goals, just one ahead of Lucas Cavallini and Cyle Larin, who have each scored five.
On Saturday, Canada thrashed Aruba 7-0 thanks to a first-half brace from Cavallini and goals each from Junior Hoilett, Zachary Braut-Guillard, Alphonso Davies, Larin and Jonathan David. Of Canada’s six different goalscorers, four of them were off the bench (Braut-Guillard, Davies, Larin, David).
Having rested many of his star players for the win over Aruba, Herdman is expected to start the likes of Davies, David, Larin, Richie Laryea, Samuel Piette and Milan Borjan against Suriname.
Larin’s strike against Aruba made him the second joint-all time top scoring Canadian in WCQ history. The Besiktas forward is now level with Dale Mitchell and Dwayne De Rosario on nine goals, and just two behind Alex Bunbury’s 11 WCQ goals for Canada. David has also had his shooting boots on for the national team, as his goal against Aruba was his 12th in 13 games for Canada.
Another player who has posed quite the attacking threat for Canada is Cavallini. The Vancouver Whitecaps striker has now bagged 16 goals in 20 appearances for the national team following his double against Aruba. Cavallini is now seven goals away from taking De Rosario’s spot as the Canadian national team’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Defensively, Canada has only conceded one goal in three games, with a clean sheet against Suriname essentially all the Reds need to progress to the second round.
This match will be the second meeting in history between Canada and Suriname, as their first clash took place all the way back in 1977 during the CONCACAF Championship. Goals from Les “Buzz” Parsons and Milovan Bakić helped Canada to a 2-1 victory in the two nations’ second game of the tournament.
When speaking to the media on Saturday, Herdman said that the Suriname clash will be no easy task for his side: “This is a good team. We’re going to have to be on our A game.”
Canada’s head coach also spoke on how he’s spoilt for choice in terms of players ahead of Tuesday’s crucial game: “We’ve got some good players in good rhythm.
“That gives me a lot of options to either start the game or finish the game against Suriname.”
Many are touting this match as Canada’s biggest soccer game in years, so expect Herdman’s men to have eyes on nothing but moving another step closer to Qatar 2022.
