Conor McGregor still wants charity wheelchair boxing match, but asks to postpone for recovery - MMA Fighting

Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor’s is down to strap on the gloves for a charity wheelchair boxing match, but he needs more time to recover.

McGregor on Monday wrote he’d follow through on a surprise announcement that he was scheduled to box Al Foran, a McGregor impressionist, on Sept. 11 at a charity match for the Irish Wheelchair Association.

The problem, wrote McGregor, was the timeline. In the midst of a rigorous recovery and physical therapy regimen for the leg he broke in his UFC 264 trilogy against Dustin Poirier, the ex-champ said he wouldn’t be ready until at least the fall.

McGregor’s rep told ESPN there would be no charity match because he was still healing. But “The Notorious” teased a presumably turbo-charged Lamborghini wheelchair.

A previous charity match dreamed up by McGregor was blocked by the UFC. Before they were booked for a trilogy, McGregor and Poirier agreed to a charity boxing match before they were redirected to the octagon. It’s unclear whether a wheelchair match would trigger the same restriction.

McGregor suffered a fracture of his left tibia and fibula near the end of the first round of his third fight with Poirier, which ended in a first-round loss by doctor’s stoppage. Doctors inserted a titanium rod in his leg to stabilize the bones. He later said he had suffered stress fractures in training camp for the fight and said the UFC was aware of his injury.

McGregor recently drew widespread condemnation for a later-deleted tweet that took aim at rival Khabib Nurmagomedov’s dead father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

Adblock test (Why?)
