CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The High Point University volleyball team fell in straight sets to North Carolina Saturday afternoon (Aug. 21) in the Panthers' only exhibition match ahead of the 2021 regular season.
The teams agreed to play a fourth set after the completion of the match, which High Point came away victorious in, 25-12.
It was a good mix of experience and newcomers that saw the court for the Panthers as 16 of the 19 players dressed for the match saw action in at least one of the three official sets. All five HPU newcomers entered the match, with freshman Jenny Wessling donning the purple jersey in all three sets as the libero.
Junior Maggie Salley led HPU's offense in the three-set match, totaling eight kills with one error on 16 attempts for a .438 hitting percentage. Right behind her with seven kills each were sophomore transfer Dylan Maberry and redshirt junior Madison Smith.
Freshman Jackie Joyce had a solo block for the Purple and White's only stuff at the net while junior Maria Miggins led the backend with seven digs and chipped in a team-high 15 assists.
High Point begins its regular season on Friday (Aug. 27) at the JMU Invitational with a match against host James Madison at 5 p.m. The Panthers will also play Illinois State on Saturday (Aug. 28) and VCU on Sunday (Aug. 29) as part of the tournament.
