After a promising start to the English Premier League season last weekend, Christian Pulisic will be forced to miss Chelsea’s second match of the season Sunday.
The U.S. men’s national team star has tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week and will be sidelined for the Blues’ match against Arsenal.
“With Christian, it’s unfortunately very easy to explain,” Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said Friday. “He had a positive test and needs to follow the protocols so he won’t be available for the game.”
The 22-year-old midfielder’s health obviously is a concern to USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter, who is preparing for the first round of World Cup qualifying in the Concacaf Octagonal.
The competition starts in 13 days and usual quarantine procedures usually takes 10 days.
The Americans kick off their 14-game schedule at El Salvador Sept. 2, host Canada Sept. 5 and play in Honduras Sept. 8.
Pulisic scored the second goal of Chelsea’s 3-0 season-opening win over Crystal Palace last Saturday, Aug. 14.
