SERIES HISTORY
Illinois State leads the all-time series, 6-1-2. Thursday will be the Redbirds' first visit to Macomb since 10/1/2017.
In the most recent matchup between the schools (a 1-0 win for ISU on 9/15/2019), current NWSL player Kate Del Fava scored in the 80th minute off an assist by current fifth-year senior Natalie Vaughn-Low to guide the Redbirds to victory. Haley Smith did not make any saves in goal as the Leathernecks did not put any shots on target. ISU outshot WIU, 20-4.
LAST TIME OUT
After a 4-0 season-opening win at Eastern Michigan (first shutout to start a season since 2007), the Redbirds fell flat against Illinois, dropping the match with a 5-1 scoreline.
Senior Riley O'Brien, the MVC's only player to score in her team's first two matches, scored in the 12th minute off an assist by fifth-year senior Ashley Santos that tied the match at 1-1 at the time.
TWO WITH TWO
Illinois State is the only team in the MVC with two players with a pair of a goals as fifth-year senior Natalie Vaughn-Low netted a season-opening brace in a 4-0 win at Eastern Michigan and senior Riley O'Brien scored against both Eastern Michigan and Illinois.
Vaughn-Low and O'Brien are in a five-way tie for the MVC lead.
FOUR GOALS MEANS TWO FOR NVL
Prior to netting four goals against EMU on Thursday, the Redbirds hadn't scored four goals in a game since 11/8/2019, a thrilling 4-3 victory over Missouri State in OT of the MVC Semifinals.
Vaughn-Low netted the game-winner, in addition to an earlier goal in the win over MSU back in 2019. Abby Basler was the most recent Redbird to score twice in a game (vs MSU on 3/5/21).
THE FIGHT FOR 50
Illinois State fifth-year head coach Brad Silvey has a shot at reaching 50 wins in the 2021 campaign, entering Thursday's game with a record of 38-32-5 and a minimum of 15 games to play.
After Western Illinois, ISU is scheduled to host Saint Louis on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
