Grammy nominations aren’t slated to be announced for several months, but eligibility closes in just a few weeks. The vast majority of tracks that will be named as possible winners are already out, and while nothing is ever certain, it seems highly likely that Taylor Swift will once again dominate the conversation and more than one field. The chart-topper is headed toward what may be one of her biggest showings at music’s biggest nights, and she stands a very good shot at tying one of the most impressive records set by two of the most successful songwriters of all time.
Swift seems like a safe bet in the Song of the Year category, as her single “Willow” will probably be up for that prize, which is regarded as one of the most prestigious in the global music industry. The trophy, which is given to songwriters (as opposed to the musicians and producers behind a hit, as is the case with the similar award Record of the Year), has thus far eluded the superstar, and while she isn’t guaranteed to collect it this time around, a nod is likely headed her way, and it will be one of her most important yet.
If “Willow” does earn one of the eight spots in the Song of the Year roundup, it will mark Swift’s sixth time competing for this trophy. One more nod will tie her with both Paul McCartney and Lionel Richie for the most possible chances to win among songwriters in the history of the Grammys. Swift has thus far been nominated for her singles “You Belong With Me,” “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” “Lover” and “Cardigan,” which was up for the golden gramophone at the most recent ceremony.
McCartney was the first artist to earn half a dozen Song of the Year nominations, and he’s collected the trophy just once. He came out on top with “Michelle,” and he was also up for the honor for “A Hard Day's Night,” “Yesterday,” “Hey Jude,” “Let It Be” as well as “Ebony And Ivory.” Five of his nods were for tracks he recorded with The Beatles, while the last named tune was a solo venture alongside Stevie Wonder.
Richie has also won Song of the Year one time out of six nominations, with his nods coming to him thanks to his work with a group, penning tunes for other stars and on his own as an artist. He collected the coveted honor in 1985 with his most recent opportunity, as he wrote the charity release “We Are The World” with Michael Jackson. He was also up for the trophy for working on the Commodores smash “Three Times A Lady,” Kenny Rogers’ single “Lady,” as well as his own hits “Endless Love,” “All Night Long (All Night)” and “Hello.”
It’s not easy to suggest that Swift will finally win Song of the Year at the 2022 Grammys, as she may face some very tough competition, depending on what’s nominated. The Evermore powerhouse will certainly celebrate if she’s up for the honor once again, as that nod will make her the third musician and the first woman to be named a potential champion with six different compositions.
