Restricted free-agent center Jesperi Kotkaniemi will join the Hurricanes on a one-year, $6.1 million contract after the Montreal Canadiens declined to match Carolina's offer sheet. Montreal had until 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday to match the offer.
The deal also includes a rarely seen $20 signing bonus. The Canadiens will receive a first- and third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft from Carolina as compensation.
"Carolina has used a tool available to them in the collective bargaining agreement and we accept that decision," Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin said in a news release.
Kotkaniemi, 21, had five goals and 15 assists for the Canadiens in 56 games this season. He was 12th on the Canadiens among forwards in minutes during their playoff run to the Stanley Cup Final.
