DePaul Drops 3-0 Match to No. 19 Creighton - DePaul Blue Demons

OMAHA, Neb. – The DePaul women's volleyball team fell in a highly contested 3-0 match to No. 19 Creighton on Friday evening at D.J. Sokol Arena.

DePaul (9-8, 2-3 BIG EAST) hung tough and saw substantial advantages in each of the three sets but couldn't capitalize in the conference setback.

Set scores of the match were 20-25, 23-25, 23-25.

Jill Pressly totaled nine kills to lead DePaul to go along with 16 digs. Junior right-side Bailey Nelson added eight kills while Donna Brown and Hanna Karl provided a spark with five kills apiece.

Brown tallied a pair of blocks to aid in the defensive effort alongside libero Rachel Krasowski who tallied a match-high 18 digs.

Molly Murrihy recorded her first double-double on the season with 14 assists and 11 digs. Ashley Cudiamat added 13 helpers to go along with five digs and a service ace.

Norah Sis totaled 13 kills to lead Creighton while All-American Jaela Zimmerman notched 12 kills and 12 digs for the Bluejays.

How it Happened:

Set One – DePaul raced out to an early 11-6 advantage to force a Creighton timeout. Through the first 17 points, the Blue Demons forced four hitting errors and two service errors. Out of the timeout, the Bluejays took off on a 4-0 run to come within two at 14-12 after three DePaul errors and a Zimmerman kill. After regrouping, Creighton took three more points to claim the lead at 15-14 before a Krasowski libero kill snapped the drought for DePaul. A Brown kill followed by a CU attack error brought the Blue Demons within one at 19-18 before the Bluejays ended the set on a 6-2 run.

Set Two – After trailing 9-6, DePaul strung together five of the next six points to take a 11-10 lead on a Aly Kindelberger kill. A Price and Kindelberger block followed by a Bluejays attack error put the Blue Demons ahead 20-18. Creighton followed with three of the next four points to knot the set at 21 apiece. Nelson's sixth kill of the afternoon staved off a Creighton set point but it wasn't enough as a Wallace attack error gave the Bluejays the set at 25-23.

Set Three – The Blue Demons took a 10-7 lead in the third after Hanna Karl provided a spark off the bench with a pair of kills. DePaul maintained a narrow edge 15-13 edge at the media timeout after Karl's third kill of the set. Creighton rattled off a 5-2 run to knot the match at 20 apiece and force a DePaul timeout. A Pressly kill followed by a Bluejays attack error gave the Blue Demons a 22-21 advantage. Creighton took the next four of five points to take the set and the match, 3-0.

From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "Probably the best we have played Creighton from a total volleyball game standard and also emotionally. They're a well-rounded and tough team that can heat up in a lot of areas. We did a nice job of dialing their attackers in and creating a lot of offensive opportunities. We were able to heat up our service game when it mattered most, and that was nice to see. It's tough to go in the L column with a match like this. One run in the first set and just so close to closing out sets 2 and 3 it can be hard to get back on the horse when you leave it all on the floor like this team did tonight. Have to get back on to get Providence on Sunday, and this group is hungry to do so."

Up Next: DePaul wraps up weekend action on Sunday afternoon with a 12 p.m. match at Providence. All the action from Alumni Hall can be streamed on FloSports.
