Key Road Match on Tap as Men's Soccer Heads to Lipscomb - FGCU Athletics


FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the regular season drawing down to its final three weeks, the FGCU men's soccer team heads to Lipscomb for a pivotal meeting on Saturday night (8 PM ET). Both teams are tied for third in the league standings with 2-2 ASUN records, while FGCU is 2-6-1 overall and the Bisons are 6-3-2 on the year.
 
The match will be streamed live on YouTube.com for free. Tickets for fans making the trip to Nashville will be available at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex gate.
 
In the ASUN standings, Central Arkansas enters the weekend tied with Stetson at 3-1 in conference play. Lipscomb and FGCU are tied with Liberty and Jacksonville for third.
 
The Eagles are coming off a 1-0 win last Saturday night against Bellarmine at Pickering Field at the FGCU Soccer Complex. Markus Maurer's (Friedrichshafen, Germany/Monroe College) was the hero of the night as he tallied the game-winning goal in the second half. The Green and Blue dominated the match from start to finish with a 19-to-1 shot advantage.
 
For the season, O'Vonte Mullings (Toronto, Ontario/Northview Heights) continues to pace the offense with a team-high five goals. Maurer became the fifth different player to tally a goal on the year joining Mullings, Aiden Jokomba  (Anchovy St. James, Jamaica/Cornwell College)Jahvanie Hammond (Lauderhill, Fla./Coral Glades HS), and Timon Zech (Starnberg, Germany/Louisiana State Eunice College).
 
Keeper Gustavo Vasconcelos (Recife, Brazil/Colegio GGE) enters the match with a 1.94 goals-against-average and a 0.723 save percentage to go with two shutouts and a 2-4-0 record.
 
The Bisons fell to North Florida, 2-0, last Saturday night in Jacksonville. At home, Lipscomb holds a 2-1-1 record on the year. Eleven different players have tallied at least one goal on the year led by Tyrese Spicer who has five and Hayes Wood who has four. Michael Sibley is the keeper of record with a 1.55 goals-against-average and a 0.673 save percentage with one shutout.
 
All-time, FGCU holds a 10-5-1 overall record against Lipscomb dating back to 2007. The two sides did not meet last year. In Nashville, the Bisons are 3-2-1 in the series.
 
Following the road trip, FGCU will remain on the road with a trip to North Florida on Saturday, October 23 for a 7 PM opening kickoff at Hodges Stadium. The Eagles will close out the regular season at home against Stetson on Saturday, October 30 with a special pre-game ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the naming of Pickering Field as well as the team's Senior Day festivities.

HEAD COACH JESSE CORMIER
Jesse Cormier is in his fifth year as head coach of the FGCU men's soccer program in the fall of 2021 after being hired in January of 2017 to become just the 2nd head coach in program history. Cormier has guided FGCU to a 31-28-12 (.518) record overall, including a 17-7-4 mark (.667) in ASUN play. The Eagles have reached the ASUN Tournament semifinals for nine-straight seasons (every year of eligibility), as Cormier has coached 28 all-conference selections since his arrival (program-record 10 in 2017). Cormier was the head coach at his alma mater the University of Vermont for the previous 13 seasons. He won 14 games with the Catamounts in 2016 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. During his time with Vermont, Cormier guided the program to the America East Tournament in 12 of 13 seasons, making five title game appearances, winning two tournament crowns, claiming a regular-season championship and advancing to three NCAA tournaments, including a pair of Second Round appearances. Cormier holds an overall 145-115-58 (.551) record as a head coach in his 16-plus seasons at the helm.

FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 24 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, 2020 Fall, and 2021 Spring semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA in each. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
