Men's Golf Central: SEC Match Play Championship - University of Tennessee Athletics

Just four days after the conclusion of its opening tournament of the spring, the Tennessee men's golf team is back in action, traveling to Birmingham for the SEC Match Play Championship.
 
The first of its kind event runs from Sunday through Tuesday. All 14 SEC schools will compete in a match play "single-elimination" format. Sunday consists of 36 holes of match play, with 18 holes being played on both Monday and Tuesday. Every team is guaranteed to play matches each day, even if eliminated en route to Tuesday's finals.
 
Tennessee is the No. 3 seeded team in the East and is set to tee off Sunday's opening round against Missouri at 10:40 a.m. ET.
 
The Vols are coming off of their season-opener at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, where they finished tied for fourth as a team in the nationally-televised tournament. Spencer Cross (T-4th) and Tyler Johnson (8th) both finished inside the top 10 individually.
 
THE VOLS' LINEUP
Spencer Cross
Tennessee's top finisher at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, Cross shot all three rounds under par for the week and finished at 7-under overall—his best score in relation to par since the 2019 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The fourth-place finish marked his fifth career top-five finish.

Tyler Johnson
Johnson shot all three rounds of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational under par, compiling a three-round score of 4-under. Johnson's eighth-place finish marks the ninth top-10 finish of his career, while his 4-under score is his best score in relation to par since shooting 6-under and winning the 2019 Intercollegiate at the Grove.

Hunter Wolcott
Tennessee's leader in stroke average last season (71.33) and a Second Team All-SEC selection, Wolcott shot two counting rounds at finished 34th at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational.
 
Bryce Lewis
Coming off of a sophomore campaign where he posted a 71.56 stroke average (third-best single-season mark in program history), Lewis opened his season with a 34th place finish at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational.
 
Cade Russell
A Knoxville native, Russell is set to make his Tennessee debut. A graduate of Christian Academy of Knoxville, Russell came to UT in the Class of 2019 as the No. 2 ranked player in the state of Tennessee according to Junior Golf Scoreboard.
 
COURSE INFORMATION
Shoal Creek Golf Club | Birmingham, Ala. | Par 72 | 7,400 yards
 
Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1977, Shoal Creek was ranked as the No. 50 golf course in the country by Golf Digest in 2010. The course has notably played host to the PGA Championship in 1984 and 1990, the U.S. Amateur in 1986 and the U.S. Junior Amateur in 2008. It also hosted the U.S. Women's Open in 2018.
