Bakersfield fought hard in each set (23-25, 20-25, 19-25), but the visiting Matadors combined hot hitting (.297 as a team) and a stout defense at the net (8.0 team blocks) to earn the road sweep over the `Runners.
On the evening, Bakersfield's offense was led by redshirt sophomore Hana Makonova, who tallied 11 kills against the Matadors. Junior setter Seleisa Elisaia recorded another double-double for CSUB, registering 29 assists and 11 digs on the match. Freshman Samia Bhakta added nine kills on .400 hitting in her Icardo Center debut.
In the first set, the two teams found themselves tied nine times including at 22-22 after Milica Vukobrat sent a kill to the floor. CSUN won three of the final four points to seal a 25-23 victory and to take an early, 1-0 lead on the match.
The Matadors raced away from the `Runners in the middle of Set 2, but Bakersfield pulled within two points at 20-18. Once again, CSUN surged to the end, winning five of the final seven rallies for a 25-20 win.
The final set was the close early on with the two teams tying the score 10 times. The Matadors sprinted to the end and closed out the victory with a 25-19 win in the third set.
CSUB (8-3, 1-2 BWC) will return to the Icardo Center on Saturday, Oct. 2, for one more Big West game at home before hitting the road for four-straight matches. First serve against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday is scheduled for 5 p.m. (PT) on the Kern Schools Court.
