Former NBA All-Star Deron Williams defeated former NFL All-Pro running back Frank Gore by split decision (38-37, 37-38, 40-35) in an exhibition boxing match on Saturday night in Tampa Bay. Both fighters, competing in the ring for the first time, showed heart throughout the four-round bout but Williams landed the heavier and cleaner punches.
His biggest moment came in the third round as he connected on a straight right on Gore with his opponent’s hands down. Williams followed up with a hard combination that forced the referee to step in and call a knockdown, as Gore was only being held up by the ropes.
Some controversy came midway through the second round after Williams shoved Gore through the ropes after an exchange. Gore got up after a pause in the action and fought the remainder of the round.
After the win, Williams said he was finished competing.
“One and done,” he joked. “I just wanted to prove to myself that I could get out there and do this.”
Gore wasn’t so sure.
“We’ll see. I had fun tonight,” he said. “I’m going to go back to my team and see what I have to learn.”
