UFC fighter Kevin Holland choked out online troll in grappling match after more than a year of harassment - ESPN

Kevin Holland called an online troll's bluff by choking him out in a grappling match.

Holland, the loquacious UFC fighter nicknamed "Big Mouth," said he had been getting messages on social media for months from a man, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner, who claimed he could submit Holland. So Holland took him up on the offer, picked up the cost of some travel expenses and invited the man, whose name is Jayden Parker, into his gym last Saturday.

Over the weekend, Holland posted videos of the match at Travis Lutter Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Fort Worth, Texas. And it didn't appear to go very well for Parker. In the video, Holland can be seen forcing Parker to tap out to a modified D'arce choke on the ground.

"I choked him," Holland told ESPN on Monday.

Holland said Parker had been messaging him on Instagram since last year saying, with coarse language, that he could make Holland tap out. Following a breakout 2020 in which he went 5-0, Holland had a difficult 2021 in the UFC with two losses and a no contest, and his wrestling and grappling skills came under the microscope. Derek Brunson and Marvin Vettori, both top middleweights, used their wrestling to ground Holland en route to unanimous decision victories.

But Brunson and Vettori are elite UFC fighters, not random people on social media. Holland said he ultimately agreed to the match in order to teach Parker a lesson. He said he paid for Parker's hotel room in Fort Worth, and bought him dinner -- shrimp fried rice -- on Friday night.

On Saturday, the two had their grappling match. Holland said Parker signed a waiver and Lutter, a former UFC fighter himself, agreed to allow the match to take place. If Parker had submitted Holland, Holland said he would have paid for the entire trip. But that, of course, did not happen. "Bottom line, people were saying things they shouldn't be saying," Holland said. "And they pull up to the gym and they finally get what they deserve. That's just how it goes. Respect is big. Respect the athlete, respect the sport, respect the people that entertain you. Simple as that."

Holland, who is moving down to welterweight for the first time in his UFC career, fights Alex Oliveira at UFC 272 on March 5 in Las Vegas. Holland, who said he has had multiple people challenge him to a fight on social media, said he plans on taking more of them up on their offers.

"If you really want to fight, you want to come test yourself?" Holland said. "I'm down. I like it. I love to fight."

As for Parker, he didn't seem to be humbled at all after being dominated by the UFC fighter, Holland said. ESPN attempted to reach out to Parker, with no immediate response.

"I don't think the kid learned anything, honestly," Holland said. "No, not at all. More so, same old, same. Nothing changed. Still was arrogant, still had an attitude. He left the gym. Who knows what happened after that."

For Holland, though, it felt like a pretty satisfying morning at work.

"I got the opportunity to give a troll a little taste of what we do," Holland said, "and it was pretty cool."

Match Analysis: CanMNT 2-0 United States -- World Cup Qualifying - Canadian Premier League

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Qualifiers
Final Score: Canada 2-0 United States
Goalscorers: Larin 7′, Adekugbe 90+5′

Match in a minute or less

The Canadian men’s national team’s magical World Cup Qualifying run had another spell to cast on Sunday afternoon, as they triumphed 2-0 in Hamilton, Ontario over the United States to extend their lead atop the Concacaf Octagonal round with just four matches left to play. Cyle Larin got the hosts on the board with a dream start just seven minutes in, as a quick piece of transitional linkup play worked like a charm to make it 1-0.

Canada weathered a storm throughout the game, holding firm under pressure (with some help from goalkeeper Milan Borjan, of course) and keeping the Americans’ high-profile attackers at bay. At last, on the absolute brink of the fulltime whistle, it was Samuel Adekugbe who delivered in spectacular fashion, seizing on a ball in the U.S. half and blasting a a strike from the top of the box past the visiting ‘keeper to put the 2-0 result on ice.

Three Observations

Directness in transition prompts dream Canadian start

The blueprint for Canada’s success was always likely to be based on vertical movement and pace in transition. That’s exactly how the Canadians found their goal off the top of the match; Kamal Miller judged the Tim Hortons Field wind better to pick off a lofted goal kick, and Jonathan Osorio made the intelligent tap forward for Jonathan David and Cyle Larin to connect.

They had a few more opportunities in that fashion, particularly from Tajon Buchanan and Richie Laryea — deployed out wide ahead of a four-man defensive line — who used their pace to try and get on the end of balls to the flank areas. Midway through the second half, Buchanan had a wonderful chance on the break thanks to a long diagonal pass by David, though it ultimately came to nothing.

The U.S. seemed to try and match Canada with some similar transitional attacks, but they didn’t quite have the same urgency in getting upfield quickly and as such they couldn’t turn the opportunities into real scoring chances or even touches in the penalty area on a consistent basis. The decision-making was a little curious in that respect; perhaps a more aggressive forward approach from the American forwards and from Weston McKennie might have caused more problems for Canada’s defensive line.

At last, it was that same directness that put Canada over the top. They were prepared for the Americans’ heavy pressure as they chased the game, and as such they were well-positioned to punish on the counter-attack, with pacey players like Tajon Buchanan and Sam Adekugbe looking for an opportunity to strike. They had a couple solid opportunities — in fact, Adekugbe had one shot from distance just moment before his goal after an excellent piece of skill by Junior Hoilett along the right touchline, in a moment that closely mirrored the one that ended the game.

It was Canada’s ruthlessness going forward that made the difference for them in attack.

Physicality helps disrupt dominant American midfield

The United States’ much-lauded midfield trio of Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, and Tyler Adams was always going to be a focal point for the Canadians to defend against. John Herdman opted to play only two central midfielders, in Mark-Anthony Kaye and Jonathan Osorio — perhaps due to necessity, with Stephen Eustáquio unavailable, Atiba Hutchinson unable to play after 90 minutes in Honduras, and Sam Piette nursing an ankle injury.

Certainly, the Americans had the better of the midfield fight for the most part, although their own possession often filtered toward the wide areas. The moments where they did cause problems through the middle, though, were concerning — especially since they mostly sprung from poor giveaways through the centre from Canada’s own midfielders.

For the most part in the first half, Canada managed to prevent the U.S. from developing much flow by disrupting things as much as possible with their physicality. Though McKennie in particular seemed to be running freely through the centre when he jumped on those loose balls, Alistair Johnston and Steven Vitória in particular clearly had the green light to stand their ground rather than step back, knocking opponents off the ball with shoulder-to-shoulder challenges.

Kaye certainly had a shaky outing in that Canadian double-pivot, responsible for a few of the more egregious giveaways, so it wasn’t surprising to see Herdman make a change. After Liam Fraser’s commendable shift in Honduras on Thursday, he got the call again around the 65th minute.

Fraser did well, though the U.S. didn’t really attack through the middle very frequently in the final half hour of the game. Still, it was physicality and strength that helped Canada hold onto the clean sheet — they were consistently able to win balls in the air and to outmuscle their opponents for 50-50 balls.

Resilient, courageous Canadians continue extraordinary march toward Qatar

Very little can be said about this Canada team that hasn’t already. They have 22 points in the Concacaf table, five more than anyone else (before Sunday night’s games, albeit). They are undefeated in World Cup Qualifying, and they’ve won five straight — beating the United States and Mexico along the way.

At times like these, rather than digging in too deep to the tactics, it’s important to take a moment and reflect. This is the same men’s national team program that, not too long ago, wasn’t guaranteed to get out of its group at the Gold Cup. To do what they did on Sunday afternoon — without the best player in Concacaf — is an astonishing testament to the leaps and bounds this team has made under John Herdman.

Sunday’s victory was not necessarily the most attractive, nor the most decisive that Canada has had in this cycle. It was, however, perhaps the most symbolic. At Tim Hortons Field — a site that, not so long ago, hosted the final of a domestic league that did not exist during the last World Cup Qualifying cycle — the Canadians finally found a moment of ascendancy over their archrivals.

Canada certainly faced pressure in this match — a lot of it, with the Americans claiming 64% possession and 13 shots (though only three were on target, another testament to the defensive organization).

Milan Borjan was asked after the game, as a longtime veteran of the Canadian national team program, what exactly has prompted this shift and dramatic rise in just a couple years.

“I can say just two words,” he said. “John Herdman.”

Indeed, the Englishman deserves no end of credit for how this side’s mentality has shifted. And on Sunday, it was really their mentality that carried them. Despite the kitchen sink thrown at them, Canada never once shied away from a physical battle — all the while staying locked into their defensive positioning. They refused to give an inch of turf away easily, and ultimately they were rewarded.

At this point, it’s becoming clear: Qatar beckons. Frankly, it may not be long before we’re wondering just how long Canada can stick around there next November.

CanPL.ca Player of the Match

Sam Adekugbe, Canada

Would’ve been a serious candidate here even without the stoppage-time heroics; Adekugbe stepped up yet again for Canada. He was fearless defensively, handling the very real American threat very capably. He made a few vital blocks, including one with his face in stoppage time, before putting the final nail in the coffin.

What’s next?

Canada will now head back down to Central America, where they’ll take on El Salvador at Estadio Cuscatlán this Wednesday, February 2 (9:00 pm ET).

Super seven: The best matches from AO 2022 | AO - Australian Open

From nerve-wracking match tiebreaks to dramatic match points saved, from rising stars cementing their potential to tour veterans fighting to scale new heights … AO 2022 was truly chock-full of highlights.

With our champions now crowned, here are seven matches that enthralled at a memorable Australian Open.

Rafael Nadal [6] def. Daniil Medvedev [2]

Men's singles final: Nadal 2-6 6-7(5) 6-4 6-4 7-5

It's always magnificent when a memorable Grand Slam tournament concludes with its most unforgettable match. And that was the case for Australian Open 2022, when Nadal went as deep as he has ever gone within himself to stage the most improbable of comebacks in the final.

Resoundingly outplayed in the opening set by reigning US Open champion Medvedev, Nadal looked certain to level the match when he built second-set leads of 4-1 and 5-3 – and 5-3 in the subsequent tiebreak. But when he failed to capitalise on any of those advantages, and Medvedev celebrated a two-set lead after slotting a backhand passing shot winner, this final looked as good as over.

Medvedev even held three break points for a 4-2 lead in the third set, but he was unable to convert any of them, and the momentum shifted. Nadal rose in intensity and firepower and eliminated errors, while Medvedev lost sting in his shots and faded physically. Nadal snatched set three, took the fourth as well, and went up an early break in the fifth, to both the delight and disbelief of the Rod Laver Arena crowd.

Royal Rumble 2022: Ronda Rousey returns from three-year WWE absence, wins women's Rumble match - CBS Sports

Ronda Rousey returns at 2022 Royal Rumble WWE pro wrestling news ufc mma news
WWE

Ronda Rousey is headed to WrestleMania three years after her last WWE match at the same event. Rousey made a surprise, but rumored, entrance at the 2022 Royal Rumble at The Dome at America's Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She entered the women's Royal Rumble match as the 28th of 30 participants.

Rousey, sporting new ring gear, received the loudest ovation of the match on Saturday night. The former UFC women's bantamweight and Raw Women's champion added Royal Rumble winner to her list of accomplishments by eliminating SmackDown Women's champion Charlotte Flair to win the match. Rousey eliminated multiple other superstars in the Rumble, including Nikki A.S.H. and Brie Bella.

"Rowdy" Rousey has now secured a world championship match at WrestleMania. Currently, SmackDown's champion is Flair and Becky Lynch reigns as Raw Women's champion. The conclusion of the Women's Royal Rumble match teased that Flair vs. Rousey is the most likely direction.

The Rumble winner last competed in WWE on April 7, 2019, at WrestleMania 35. She entered the event as Raw Women's champion, losing her title in a triple threat match with Becky Lynch and SmackDown Women's champion Charlotte Flair. Lynch pinned Flair in the match. Rousey has yet to ever be pinned or submitted in the seven years since her debut.

The match welcomed many other women's wrestlers of the past; however, Rousey's is the most likely to lead to a longer run with the company. Melina, Kelly Kelly, Michelle McCool, Cameron, Ivory (portraying her Right to Censor gimmick), Brie Bella, Impact Knockouts world champion Mickie James, Alicia Fox, Summer Rae, Nikki Bella, Sarah Logan, Lita and Mighty Molly Holly all made rare appearances.

WWE

One of the biggest events of the pro wrestling year is set to go down when the WWE Royal Rumble lands in St. Louis, Missouri, on Jan. 29. The event is the start to what WWE has dubbed "WrestleMania season" as the promotion ramps up toward the biggest wrestling event of them all.

Nearly every superstar on the roster will be involved in the PPV in one way or another given the 60 total entrants into both Rumble matches, but there's still more to be excited about on the undercard with three championship matches as well. WWE champion Brock Lesnar will look to retain his belt when he takes on former champ Bobby Lashley in a match nearly 15 years in the making. Plus, Universal champ Roman Reigns will face off with an old friend turned rival when he takes on Seth Rollins. And Raw women's titleholder Becky Lynch will look to make another defense against Doudrop.

As with all major WWE events, Royal Rumble will stream live on Peacock. The main card will begin at 8 p.m. ET following a kickoff show one hour prior.

Let's take a look at what we know -- and what we expect -- at WWE Royal Rumble.

WWE Royal Rumble matches

WWE Championship -- Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Bobby Lashley: Lesnar captured the WWE championship at Day 1, winning a fatal five-way match against Lashley, Big E, Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens. Lesnar only ended up in the match because Roman Reigns tested positive for COVID-19. The following Raw, Lashley won a shot against Lesnar in a four-way match. This sets up a long-awaited first-time meeting between Lesnar and Lashley, two of the premier powerhouse wrestlers of their generation.

Universal Championship -- Roman Reigns (c) vs. Seth Rollins: Reigns was in need of an opponent with Lesnar having won the WWE championship at the point where Reigns was out due to a positive COVID test. WWE official Adam Pearce was tasked with finding Reigns an opponent and the Jan. 7 edition of SmackDown came to a close with Rollins showing up in Reigns' locker room and laughing at the champion. It was then confirmed on the following Raw that Rollins would, in fact, be Reigns' opponent despite the two being on different brands.

Miz & Maryse vs. Edge & Beth Phoenix: Since Edge and Miz began mixing things up, it seemed the obvious endpoint was a mixed tag match involving their wives. Both Maryse and Phoenix are former champions who no longer compete in the ring but will get to work in a marquee match at the Rumble. Maryse tried to help Miz steal a win at Day 1 but was chased off by Phoenix, setting up the match.

Raw Women's Championship -- Becky Lynch (c) vs. Doudrop: Doudrop earned her shot at the title by defeating Liv Morgan and Bianca Belair in a triple threat match on Raw. Morgan and Belair have both had programs with Lynch recently so Doudrop was the freshest option of the trio for a Lynch opponent and now Lynch will look to retain against a very different type of opponent when she faces the powerhouse at the Rumble.

Men's Royal Rumble match: Interestingly, "Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville was the first man to announce that he would participate in the Royal Rumble, making the announcement via a video that aired during Day 1. A handful of participants are now known, but there are plenty more to come as well as surprises once the actual match begins. Participants: Johnny Knoxville, Montez Ford, Angelo Dawkins, Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio, Austin Theory, Sheamus, Damian Priest, AJ Styles, Big E, Happy Corbin, Madcap Moss, Sami Zayn, Kofi Kingston, Kevin Owens, Omos, Randy Orton, Riddle, Chad Gable, Otis, Dolph Ziggler, Robert Roode, Shinsuke Nakamura, Rick Boogs, Ricochet

Women's Royal Rumble match: WWE announced many participants in a single shot, including spoiling a number of potential surprises in the process. Participants: Carmella, Dana Brooke, Nikki A.S.H., Queen Zelina, Rhea Ripley, Tamina, Aliyah, Charlotte Flair, Naomi, Natalya, Shayna Baszler, Shotzi, Brie Bella, Lita, Nikki Bella, Kelly Kelly, Michelle McCool, Mickie James, Summer Rae, Bianca Belair, Liv Morgan, Sasha Banks, Sonya Deville

2022 Royal Rumble Preview: Odds and match predictions - Sportsnet.ca

We’re officially on the road to WrestleMania as we get set for the 2022 Royal Rumble. While the Rumble annually grabs the attention of wrestling fans, there has been some extra juice to the excitement over the last several years thanks to an influx of gambling interest.

As more and more areas of the world ease restrictions on legalizing gambling, several companies have begun offering odds on various pro wrestling events. The Royal Rumble is the perfect event for casual gamblers and wrestling fans alike as it offers an easy window into fandom and interest.

SN Bets is getting in on the action for this edition of the Royal Rumble, taking a unique look at the odds on some of the favourites and long shots.

Before you watch this Saturday, also make sure to join the SN Bets Royal Rumble pool, where you’ll go head-to-head with other fans on various Rumble prop bet questions.

Men’s Royal Rumble

The most interesting aspect of the men’s Royal Rumble odds surrounds the fact that several of the top favourites aren’t actually confirmed to be in the match, in addition to wrestling in other matches on the card.

Pro tip: these odds might give you an edge on our SN Bets Royal Rumble Pool! It’s free to play now. https://t.co/BiwejAUUxx#RoyalRumble2022#WWE pic.twitter.com/v3iNXWE5lu

Despite being scheduled to defend the WWE Championship in a one-on-one match against Bobby Lashley, Brock Lesnar has the second best odds to win the Rumble at +375, meaning if you were to bet $100 you would win $375. The thinking surrounding these odds is that Lesnar will end up doing one of two things before entering the Rumble.

He will either drop the championship to Lashley before entering himself in the Rumble match where, in a pit of monstrous rage, he will decimate the competition leading to a win and a main event championship match with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, supposedly WWE’s preferred choice for their pinnacle event later in the year. Or he will successfully defend the WWE Championship, but still enter himself in the match in order to win and guarantee himself a shot at Reigns at ‘Mania.

Reigns, while also not confirmed to participate in the match, is also listed among the favourites to win. The “Head of the Table” holds odds of +900.

Whatever route this route this match takes, all roads will likely still lead to Lesnar as last man, securing his second career Rumble victory.

Should WWE decide to go in a different direction, there is still a very worthwhile winner in the form of Big E. As the previous champion to Lesnar, Big E more than carried the weight of the championship during his reign as champion from Sept. 2021 until Jan. 1 when lost the title in a five-way match to Lesnar. Big has the second-best odds behind Lesnar at +400.

If you’re looking for a blast from the past, The Rock is going off at +1,500. The biggest movie star in the world quietly retired from pro wrestling in 2019. That hasn’t stopped fans from hypothesizing that he may one day come back for a match with his real life cousin, and current Universal Champion, Roman Reigns.

In an interview with Sportsnet ahead of WrestleMania last year, Bobby Lashley mentioned that, “everybody would want to do something with The Rock, but that’s Roman (Reigns) and I’m not even going to go there.” The speculation and rumours of a Rock return extend behind the curtain in WWE, apparently.

Other legends listed on odds boards include John Cena and Randy Orton at +2,500, last years winner Edge at +3,000, Rey Mysterio at +7,000, Triple H at +8,500 and more. If you’re looking to get really crazy, you can lay a bet on the chairman of the company to come out on top. Yes, you can bet that Vince McMahon will win his second career Rumble at the extremely long odds of +45,000.

The Rumble will also often include celebrity appearances. This year Johnny Knoxville, the star of the Jackass movie franchise, will be one of 30 entrants. Knoxville and Montreal native Sami Zayn have been sparring both verbally and physically in the lead up to the event, meaning the Canadian will undoubtedly share some screen time alongside the movie star.

Match Prediction: Brock Lesnar wins

Women’s Royal Rumble

In a very similar scenario to the men’s match, the odds on the Women’s Royal Rumble are paced by a wrestler who isn’t officially entered in the match. In fact, the odds leader hasn’t been in a ring on television since WrestleMania 2019.

Pro tip: these odds might give you an edge on our SN Bets Royal Rumble Pool! It’s free to play now. https://t.co/BiwejAUUxx#RoyalRumble2022#WWE pic.twitter.com/v3iNXWE5lu

— SNBets (@SNBets) January 27, 2022

Ronda Rousey started Rumble week near the top of the odds list at +335, but in a span of about 24 hours shot up the boards to -133. That means you would have to bet $133 to win $100.

Rousey’s last appearance in WWE came in a losing effort when she dropped her Raw Women’s Championship to Becky Lynch in the main event of ‘Mania in 2019. Now it’s rumoured that she’s ready to return and has been actively training in anticipation of once again stepping back inside the squared circle.

A Rumble win for Rousey would send her to the main event of ‘Mania once again. She’d have a perfect match already set in place in the form of Lynch, who currently holds the SmackDown Women’s Championship. A Rousey victory makes all the sense in the world from an excitement and match-making standpoint, therefore making her an easy favourite.

Where Rousey’s stock has risen, many others have seen theirs decline. That includes former SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair who started the week at +350 but has since tumbled down to +650.

While this may seem like a time to sell on Belair, this is actually a strong value play. Belair is undoubtedly part of the future of WWE, as evidenced by her run as champion for nearly half of a year in 2021. She continues to hold a spot at or near the top of every card she wrestles on, and there is an easy story to tell if she were to win surrounding wanting some modicum of revenge on Lynch who usurped her last year at SummerSlam. It’s also worth remembering that Rousey isn’t officially confirmed to be in the match.

Current SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair has inserted herself in the match, justifying her participation by noting she will get to choose her own opponent for WrestleMania should she win. Charlotte’s odds sit at +1,200.

The women’s match will certainly feature several surprises. One of such would be Bayley’s return. The three-time women’s champ has been out of action since July due to a torn ACL, with her expected return time to be nine months. A return at the Rumble would mark a quicker-than-expected recovery. However, many other wrestlers have come back at the Rumble sooner than expected after significant injuries most notably Triple H and John Cena.

There are also plenty of legends set to enter the Women’s Rumble including Lita (+1,100), Nikki Bella (+2,500), Brie Bella (+12,000) and several others. There are also rumblings that two-time championship holder Paige could make a return to wrestling at the Rumble, with her odds listed at +1,500. Those odds give her a better chance to win than current roster members such as Asuka (+1,700), Naomi (+1,800), Shayna Baszler (+2,500), Shotzi Blackheart (+10,000) and several others.

Toronto native, and WWE Hall of Fame member, Trish Stratus isn’t officially in the match but she is still listed at +17,500.

Match Prediction: Ronda Rousey wins

Other Match Predictions

Bobby Lashley (+140) def. Brock Lesnar (-200) to win WWE Championship

Roman Reigns (-238) def. Seth Rollins (+165) to retain Universal Championship

Becky Lynch (-1,250) def. Doudrop (+700) to retain Raw Women’s Championship

Edge & Beth Phoenix (-455) def. The Miz & Maryse (+300) in a mixed tag team match

All odds via CoolBets

These odds will likely fluctuate as both Royal Rumble matches approach, so in order to keep up with the latest betting trends make sure to following along with Sportsnet’s live blog coverage of the Royal Rumble starting at 7:00p.m. ET, 4:00p.m. PT.

Australian Open 2022: Daniil Medvedev rallies from mid-match meltdown to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in semis - Sporting News

Daniil Medvedev will be shooting for his second consecutive grand slam title after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the Australian Open semifinals on Friday.

The Russian, who won his first major at the 2021 US Open, will meet Spanish legend Rafael Nadal in Sunday's final, with the sixth seed trying to win his 21st grand slam title to go one ahead of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

With Melbourne's strong Greek community, the crowd was very much behind the fourth-seeded Tsitsipas, with boos ringing out for Medvedev as the Russian player entered Rod Laver Arena.

Service games were relatively straightforward until the ninth game, where Tsitsipas found himself 0-40 down on his own serve before saving four break points to win the game.

The tight first set inevitably ended up in a tiebreak, with the players locked at 5-5 before Medvedev got the set point and converted to clinch the opening set.

After winning the first set 7-6 in a tight tussle, Medvedev double faulted to hand Tsitsipas the second set 6-3, with fans cheering the mistake loudly at Rod Laver Arena.

During the break between the sets, Medvedev launched into a stunning attack on the chair umpire, first accusing Tsitsipas of receiving coaching in the stands from his father, before turning on the official for a perceived lack of respect.

"Bro are you mad? His father can talk every point? Are you stupid? His father can talk every point?" Medvedev raged at the chair umpire.

As the chair umpire attempted to speak to Medvedev, the Russian repeatedly yelled: "His father can talk every point."

Medvedev continued ranting: "Will you answer my question? Can you answer my question please? Can his father talk every point?"

After another response from the chair umpire, Medvedev got more aggressive: "Oh my god, oh my god, you're so bad man.

"How can you be so bad in the semi-final of a grand slam? Look at me. Look at me. I'm talking to you."

PRIZE MONEY: How much will the winners make in 2022? Purse, breakdown for field

After the drama, Medvedev saved two set points before Tsitsipas converted his third to even the match and take the second set 6-4.

The Russian looked like he was ready to implode at the start of the third set, giving up two break points before fighting back to claim the game.

Games remained on serve until 5-4 when suddenly Medvedev had three set points at 0-40 on Tsitsipas' delivery, with the Russian clinching it 6-4 on his second break point.

Medvedev continued to press his advantage in the fourth, breaking Tsitsipas in the fourth game to set himself up to win the match.

With the crowd on his back, Medvedev raced his way through the fourth set to win 6-1, as Tsitsipas dropped his competitiveness level.

Match Analysis: Honduras 0-2 CanMNT — World Cup Qualifying – Canadian Premier League - Canadian Premier League

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Qualifiers
Final Score: Honduras 0-2 Canada
Goalscorers: Maldonado 10′ (OG), David 73′

Match in a minute or less

For the first time since 1985, the Canadian men’s national team won away from home in Honduras, as they beat Los Catrachos 2-0 on Thursday to remain top of the Concacaf World Cup Qualifying group with 19 points.

Tajon Buchanan got Canada on the board early, surging into the box from the right flank before flicking a cross off Honduras defender Denil Maldonado and into the net just 10 minutes in. After a scrappy middle section of the game — where the visitors needed some massive saves from Milan Borjan to stay in front — it was Jonathan David who produced the heroics to see things out. He got on the end of a gorgeous long-range pass from Liam Fraser to put himself on goal alone, chipping the keeper to make it 2-0 with 15 minutes to play.

Three Observations

Canada bruised, not broken by physical, scrappy contest

As expected, the Hondurans did not make it easy for Canada on their turf. Though the atmosphere wasn’t necessarily as raucous as it might’ve been, with COVID-19 restrictions limiting the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano to half capacity, this was still hostile territory. The grass was long, slow, and bumpy, which made it difficult to play quick ground passes and establish comfortable possession, which forced both sides to play direct and over the top — just as the Hondurans wanted.

Canada could cope with that, of course, but perhaps the bigger issue was the intense physicality of the match. Similarly to the home game against Panama in October, Honduras came into this match with tackles flying in from all angles. Tajon Buchanan and Sam Piette, in particular, seemed to take a beating in the first half, with the former’s speed and the latter’s strength on the ball prompting the Hondurans to chop them down repeatedly. Piette took the brunt of a challenge from behind not long before halftime, and the knock was hard enough to rule him out of the rest of the match — a major blow to Canada’s game plan, considering Piette’s ability to hold up the ball and break things up in midfield.

That said, Liam Fraser’s addition as Piette’s replacement certainly worked out pretty well.

“It wasn’t gonna be that night where the perfect night was there, we had to make it a good bad day,” Canada coach John Herdman said postmatch. “That was the mentality I was setting them up with. There’d be all sorts of things, and we did face a few things while we were here, even prior to the game. We weren’t looking for a perfect performance, but we wanted that discipline and professionalism.”

Referee Daneion Parchment certainly let Honduras get away with some crunching tackles, though the yellow cards did begin to come out in the second half — albeit equally between the two sides, with Canada and Honduras each going into the book three times. Still, at least none of Canada’s cautions went to players at risk of suspension.

The physical play from the hosts definitely hurt Canada’s rhythm at times, and on the narrow pitch there wasn’t much space to avoid such collisions, but the Canadians were certainly prepared for the battle. Piette’s health will definitely be a concern heading into Sunday’s game — especially considering Stephen Eustáquio’s unclear status and Mark-Anthony Kaye’s mysterious absence from Thursday’s matchday squad.

Hesitancy in front of goal a concern, but individual quality saves the day

This was a game that could’ve had a lot more goals in it (for both teams, in fairness). Canada created some excellent chances from quick play into the strikers, creating some numerical overloads and clean looks at goal, but on a few occasions they were a little hesitant to shoot. Cyle Larin, in particular — despite his clinical finishing in previous contests for his country — looked to make an extra pass several times despite a decent look at goal, and Jonathan David produced a fairly weak shot one-on-one with the keeper just minutes before he redeemed himself with his spectacular goal.

Canada could probably stand to simplify things in front of goal and just drive a shot on net rather than look for the perfect opportunity, particularly when they create such chances from quick transitional play — better to get a shot off immediately rather than wait and allow defenders to get back. They had just seven shots on the night despite several more opportunities where they didn’t trouble the goalkeeper.

Perhaps that’s a concern going forward, but it didn’t matter on Thursday night. Tajon Buchanan’s individual brilliance created the first goal — which wasn’t even finished by a Canadian player — and David found his world-class scoring touch with his extraordinary second-half goal. Those skillful elements have often surfaced when Canada have needed them most in this World Cup Qualifying cycle, setting them apart from opponents.

“Watching (David) on that transition, and the goal that he scored — I mean, that was special,” Herdman said of his striker. “I think that’s what this team is, it can balance it out; it can grind and defend, they can hit teams on the counter attack, and on other days it can play. I think we were able to create the mentality that’s required for the moment, and that mentality tonight was to make sure we came out of here, no matter what it took, with a win.”

On David specifically, Herdman added: “He’s a top player in Europe, and to find that player to do the dirty work when they’re coming into environments like this, that’s not easy. I take my hat off to him, you see his running stats they’re right up there, but then he can produce that moment. And it was late, it was quite late in the game, he put a big shift in and he’s still there ready to bring that — I’ve called him it before, that Iceman, that ice in his veins in big moments.”

In the frozen encounter with the United States on Sunday, Canada may look to be more clinical and simplify things in front of goal, as they did in the two games against Costa Rica and Mexico in Edmonton, where they seemed more keen on getting shots off. Either way, though, this side has the talent to create exceptional chances.

Strong defensive shape cuts off direct transition attacks

Herdman seems to have done his homework before this game, identifying exactly how he expected Honduras to play and delivering a plan to stop them. He knew the hosts would try and strike in transition with the pace and quality of Romell Quioto and Alberth Elis — which undoubtedly did prove to be their plan with dangerous balls over the top for the quick forwards to chase.

However, Canada did an exceptional job of breaking up those transitional efforts before they could become an issue. Atiba Hutchinson (one of the few remaining players from the now-exorcised 8-1 game in 2012), in particular, was a hurricane in midfield, reading spaces well to get in passing lanes and take away opportunities for quick balls forward. Both Piette and Fraser did well in that respect too (though the ball-winning is perhaps more Piette’s forte than Fraser’s), and the front line was able to force rushed balls by running at defenders — Jonathan David in particular covered extraordinary ground without the ball.

Opting for a back five in this game, Herdman gambled somewhat by placing Tajon Buchanan at right wingback, but it paid off in spades. Buchanan was one of the few players on the pitch who could match the Honduran wingers for pace, so he was very capable of getting back in transition and cutting off some of the balls out wide that Honduras tried to play. He was caught upfield a few times, which left defenders Scott Kennedy, Alistair Johnston, and Steven Vitória exposed — and none of them could keep up with Elis or Quioto in that phase — but for the most part Canada kept a very strong shape and limited the threat.

“They’ve never really put (Anthony) Lozano, Elis and Quioto on the field together, we’ve never seen that sort of trio and tonight we did,” Herdman pointed out postgame. “We knew it was coming, and from that perspective we had to match that quality. That back five tonight I thought stood strong; they had some good moments from flank areas, but the thing that they never did — which is what we’ve seen time and time again — is hurt us in that transitional moment.

“Their last five goals have been almost carbon copy, with that one pass in behind to Quioto or Elis, and we never gave them that tonight, and that was the key. We said we would not give them that goal in transition, they’d have to really earn it tonight.”

Of course, Canada needed a few jaw-dropping saves from their goalkeeper to keep their heads above water at times, but Borjan’s experience and talent kept everything together at the back.

Milan Borjan, Canada

Were it not for a few unbelievable saves (none more impressive than his diving free kick stop near the 70th minute), this could’ve gone a very different way. The Red Star Belgrade keeper was a hero for Canada in this match, keeping a glorious clean sheet and leading the team from the back.

What’s next?

After this match, it’s a long trip back up to Canada for Les Rouges, where they’ll take on the United States at Hamilton’s Tim Hortons Field this Sunday, January 30 (3:05 pm ET).

Women attend Iran-Iraq match in Tehran stadium - FRANCE 24

Issued on: Modified:

Tehran (AFP) – Iranian women were allowed Thursday for the first time in almost three years to attend a football match of their country's national team in a Tehran stadium.

"I am very happy. This is the first time I have attended a match at Azadi Stadium," said a 26-year-old civil engineer who gave her name only as Mahya. She carried the national green, white and red flag, and covered her head with a grey scarf.

The Islamic republic has generally barred female spectators from football and other stadiums for around 40 years. Clerics, who play a major role in decision-making, argue women must be shielded from the masculine atmosphere and sight of semi-clad men.

World football's governing body FIFA ordered Iran in September 2019 to allow women access to stadiums without restriction and in numbers determined by demand for tickets.

A month later women were able to attend a 2022 World Cup qualifying match between Iran and Cambodia in Azadi Stadium.

For the first match since then, 2,000 of the 10,000 tickets were exclusive to women on Thursday for the 2022 World Cup qualifier between Iran and Iraq, ISNA news agency reported.

"I bought the tickets online and got an SMS confirming it," Mahya said, adding that "if we win, we will go celebrate the victory in the streets."

She got her wish, witnessing a 1-0 home side win over Iraq.

"There is nothing strange or complicated" about a woman going to the stadium, said Mahya.

"It should have happened earlier," she said. "I hope that this will continue."

'Blue Girl'

The female fans entered through a special entrance via a car park, controlled by policewomen wearing black chador robes and red badges on their arms.

"I wished to have my husband beside me but they said men and women are segregated," said another female spectator, Golnaz Bahari, 24.

"It will be a lot better if families can come together," said Bahari, carrying her child in one hand and a vuvuzela horn in the other.

Iran's female fans sat behind the Iraqi goal.

Wearing thick coats against winter's chill, some had the national colours painted on their cheeks, and many carried Iranian flags or horns in the national colours.

They sat apart from the men but united with them in supporting their side, with shouts of "Iran! Iran!" drowning out the few fans from Iraq. The two countries were at war for years in the 1980s.

The 2019 FIFA directive, under threat of Iran's suspension, came after a fan named Sahar Khodayari died after setting herself on fire outside a court in fear of being jailed for trying to attend a match.

Dubbed "Blue Girl" because of the colours of the club she supported -- Esteghlal FC -- she had reportedly been detained in 2018 when she tried to enter a stadium while dressed as a boy.

Her death sparked an outcry, with many calling for Iran to be banned and matches boycotted.

Since Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979, women have borne the brunt of swift changes in the nation's moral codes.

Women are subject to a strict dress code, and while deemed more liberal than that of many Arab countries, Iranian legislation since the revolution has been criticised as detrimental to women in cases of marriage, divorce and inheritance.

Women may hold high positions, including in parliament and the government, but cannot serve as judges and have not been allowed to run for president.

FIFA had been pushing for years for Iran to open its stadiums to women, but Tehran had until 2019 only allowed a limited number of them to attend matches on rare occasions.

Since October 2019, when women last attended a national match, Covid-19 restrictions put an end to attendance by any fans -- until Thursday.

Matthews ready to match wits with Zegras - TSN

Columnist image

The Maple Leafs (optional) and Anaheim Ducks skated at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday.

During the 2021 World Juniors, Auston Matthews took to Twitter to praise Trevor Zegras, who would go on to be named tournament MVP while leading Team USA to a gold medal. The Leafs centre continues to be impressed by the 20-year-old Ducks dynamo.

"He's fun to watch," Matthews said. "Really skilled one-on-one and he makes plays. Really smart out there."

Zegras, meanwhile, appreciates the swagger that Matthews brings to the ice.

"He's got a lot of confidence with the puck and is very confident in the plays he can make," Zegras observed. "When he gets in those scoring areas, he really doesn't miss. We've done a ton of video on him today."

Matthews scored in Toronto's 5-1 win at Anaheim in November. Zegras fired a season-high eight shots on net that night but was held off the scoresheet in his first showdown with Matthews.

"He's a little bit bigger than I thought," Zegras said with a grin. "I think he's a little bit taller and maybe a little more muscle than I thought, for sure."

Matthews stands 6-foot-3, 205 pounds.

"He's an unbelievable player and a guy I watched a lot growing up, so it's definitely cool going up against him," Zegras said.

"It's always humbling hearing that," said Matthews.

Matthews leads the Leafs with 25 goals in 35 games but has failed to score in the past two outings. He hasn't gone three straight games without a goal since Nov. 18-21, 2021.

"They have a lot of young guys with skill that can make plays," Matthews said of the Ducks. "Those guys have really added jump in their lineup and some offensive creativity. They're an explosive team."

Swagger showdown: Matthews appreciates 'really smart' Zegras

After six straight games on the road, the Maple Leafs are finally playing at home again. Even without fans in the building tonight's duel with the Ducks should be full of energy as it features a match-up of American stars in Trevor Zegras and Auston Matthews. As Mark Masters reports, they are two guys who aren't short on swagger.

---

Matthews has provided plenty of highlight-reel moments this season, but Zegras may have authored the play of the year with his flip pass – aka "The Michigan Assist" – on a goal by Sonny Milano on Dec. 7 in Buffalo.

"A lot of stuff's got to work out there for it to go like it did, and they pulled it off," Matthews said. "That's going to be a highlight that people are watching for a long time."

Even though Zegras didn't get named to the Pacific Division All-Star team, he's been invited to Las Vegas next month to take part in the Breakaway Challenge during the skills competition. He has asked followers on Twitter to share their thoughts on moves he could try.

"I got a bunch of ideas now," Zegras said with a smile. "I appreciate everybody chiming in. Definitely some funny comments and helped me get some ideas for sure."

Some suggestions have already been ruled out, including a proposal to honour Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf.

"Somebody told me to wear a bald cap for Getzy," Zegras said with a chuckle, "so that's definitely not happening. That's a no-go."

---

Zegras has been able to put up 30 points, behind only Detroit's Lucas Raymond (33) in the rookie scoring race, because he trusts his creative instincts.

"When I look at a guy like Z, he's a guy that has got all kinds of offensive abilities and he's got the confidence," noted teammate Troy Terry, who will play in his first All-Star Game this year. "He comes right into the league and if he has a turnover or whatever, it doesn't faze him. He knows it's going to work for him more times than not. I was not that way. When it wasn't working right away, I went into a shell."

Terry is certainly out of his shell now. The 24-year-old has figured out the mental side of the game and the offensive production has flowed. Terry is tied for sixth in the Rocket Richard Trophy race with 23 goals.

"This year, when I'm getting into those areas, I've got the confidence and I'm excited to get those chances," he said, "because I'm ready to score."

---

The Leafs will be playing their first home game in three weeks. Unfortunately, just like the last two games at Scotiabank Arena in early January, there will be no fans in the stands due to pandemic restrictions.

"We're used to it so, honestly, I think it will a lot harder on other teams that have to come to Canada and play in these buildings and aren't used to it," Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly said.

This will be the first time all season that the Ducks have played in an empty building.

"It might be a little different, but it's something both teams have to play through," said Anaheim assistant coach Mike Stothers, who is running the bench while head coach Dallas Eakins is in COVID protocol. "We'll see how it goes, but it's Toronto. Everybody gets up to play Toronto."

"It might be a little weird at the start," said Ducks defenceman Jamie Drysdale. "For me, once you get dialled into the game you can block everything out unless they're cheering for you and then you use it as energy."

Drysdale, who enjoyed a home-cooked meal with his family on Tuesday night, will be playing his first NHL game in his hometown.

"Just playing in this building will be enough energy for me," the 19-year-old said. "The fact I'm going to play in this building against the Leafs is pretty cool. It's something that I kind of dreamed of doing growing up. It would be nice to have folks at the game and some friends, but just playing here against the Leafs will be cool."

---

Growing up as a Leafs fan, Drysdale kept a close eye on Rielly.

"I watched a lot of the Leafs growing up," the Toronto native said with a grin. "There's no hiding that. Growing up here it was all about the Leafs. I definitely gravitated to his game and how he moves around the ice, how he controls the play, so definitely a guy I watched a lot of and learnt a lot from."

Stothers coached Rielly in Moose Jaw in the Western Hockey League and sees plenty of similarities between him and Drysdale.

"They're both creative," he said. "They are both willing to take some risks to contribute offensively and ... if there's an error or mistake made, they're usually quick enough to recover and get back and help out. If Drys picked Morgs as his favourite player or someone he wants to model his game after, I think good on Drys. I don't think there can be anybody better, both on or off the ice, than Morgan Rielly. I loved having him. I still love watching him play. I probably will be cringing when I see him get the puck and skating up the ice tonight, but I don't think Drys can do any better than having Morgs as a role model."

Toronto native Drysdale pumped to face Leafs, and role model Rielly

Growing up in the greater Toronto area, Ducks defenceman Jamie Drysdale idolized current Leafs reaguard Morgan Rielly, and is pumped to not only be playing Toronto, but to face his role model as well.

---

The Leafs will be experimenting with a new forward alignment, which features Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander on different lines. There's another way of looking at this balanced approach, however.

"We've now put [Ilya] Mikheyev and [Pierre] Engvall and [David] Kampf on three different lines as well," coach Sheldon Keefe pointed out. "With how well they've played, we think those three guys on three different lines adds a lot."

With the Leafs stumbling a bit during the recent six-game stretch on the road, Keefe turned to the line of Kampf between Mikheyev and Engvall to set the tone.

"Those guys have really established play for us," Keefe said. "We've started them in each game and each period, because they've gone out and established our game for us."

Kampf, a defensive-minded centre who often gets fed a steady diet of defensive-zone starts, now finds himself between Alex Kerfoot and Nylander.

"You'll see me move things around to ensure he's still getting the D-zone starts that I like him to have," Keefe said. "At times he'll come off that line when there's O-zone faceoffs and things of that nature. He's a valuable player for us no matter where we've had him in the lineup or who he's played with, especially games where we've had the lead, because we trust him."

The coach also stressed that Kampf, who has gone seven games without a point, can help a top scorer like Nylander, who has 38 points in 38 games.

"Kampf's done a lot of good things," Keefe said. "He's underrated with his ability to move the puck up the ice and make plays and distribute the puck to his wingers."

Leafs Ice Chips: Keefe splits up his tone setters

After placing Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander on three different lines, head coach Sheldon Keefe revealed how David Kampf, who usually takes defensive zone faceoffs, will be deployed tonight. TSN's Mark Masters has more.

---

Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin skated for a third straight day but will miss a third straight game due to a concussion.

"The progress has been steady," said Keefe. "Despite the fact he was in a red [no-contact] jersey yesterday, he really got through the entire practice and did a little bit more than we even thought that he would. He'll have his neuro psych test today, which will determine his status going forward. The progress has been very good. He's been feeling good, but just has to go through the necessary steps to be cleared to go full contact and prepare to play."

Muzzin making 'steady' progress in recovery from concussion

Jake Muzzin was in a normal coloured jersey in Toronto's morning skate ahead of their game against the Ducks. Maple Leafs head coach said that the defenceman is making "steady" progress in recovery from concussion.

Road-weary Jets no match for red-hot Panthers - Winnipeg Sun

Article content

The last thing the Winnipeg Jets wanted to see following their four-game road trip — a slate of games that all ended in losses — was the juggernaut known as the Florida Panthers rolling into town.

Article content

The team that’s amassed the most points so far during this 2021-22 season didn’t disappoint, and they didn’t even need much help from their big guns.

Depth scoring, something the Jets sorely lack, was on full display for the Panthers in their 5-3 win in front of restriction-limited 250 fans at Canada Life Centre on Tuesday.

“Frustrated. Just inconsistent play,” said Paul Stastny, who scored in the game. “There’s parts that are good, parts that are bad. It seems like we shoot ourselves in the foot and get away from the game a little bit. It’s almost as if we’re trying to play for offence too much. We leave our d-men on an island, leave our goaltender on an island.”

Florida’s third line took it to the Jets, contributing three of their five goals on the night as Mason Marchment — Bryan’s son — scored twice and added an assist, while rookie Anton Lundell had a goal and an assist himself.

Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Bennett also scored for the Panthers, who won their 29th game and lead the NHL with 63 points.

Jonathan Huberdeau, who entered the day in a three-way tie for first in NHL scoring with 58 points, was held off the scoresheet.

“I think we made a lot of mistakes,” interim head coach Dave Lowry said, bemoaning the loss of Josh Morrissey just prior to puck drop after the latter entered COVID protocol.

“I’m not going to make excuses but you find out an hour before (the game) you’re going to lose your top defencemen when you’re playing one of the best teams and one of the most offensive teams and you take J-Mo out. You’re putting some guys in positions where they haven’t seen anything like this. Florida’s a team where they like that wide-open game, they like to open it up, they’ve got some finishers, and they score a lot of goals.”

The team recalled rearguards Ville Heinola, who made his season debut, and Jonathan Kovacevic from the taxi squad.

Kyle Connor and Pierre-Luc Dubois also scored for the Jets, who have collected just two points in their past five games (0-3-2) and slipped five points behind the Dallas Stars for the second and final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

“Obviously you give up five goals, you might win once or twice this year,” Stastny said. “But you shouldn’t expect that. You score three goals you should find a way to win and that should be our mindset. It’s tough right now. Guys are frustrated.”

The first period was a see-saw, back-and-forth affair as both teams went exchanged punches.

Marchment’s first of the night was an incredible deflection in front on a Lundell pass from the half boards that went bar down behind Connor Hellebuyck at 2:09.

Marchment, who had four goals in 54 NHL games coming into the night, nearly matched his career total in the first all by himself as two more chances were turned aside before Stastny’s ninth tied it 1-1 at 8:19.

Undrafted, Marchment would put Florida back in the lead at 12:06, taking a Sam Reinhart feed alone in the slot and wiring his wrist shot high blocker side on Hellebuyck, who started his 12th straight game and 26th in Winnipeg’s last 28 outings.

The Jets would tie the game up again just 51 seconds later as Cole Perfetti recorded his first NHL assist on Kyle Connor’s 23rd of the year. Perfetti’s vision was on full display on the goal, placing a great cross-ice feed to Connor, who deked Panthers starter Sergei Bobrovsky before tucking the backhand in at 12:57.

Lundell would get his 10th of the year at 17:33 to send the Panthers into the first intermission with a 3-2 lead.

Perfetti would be the man setting up Winnipeg’s third equalizer of the game just 3:30 into the second.

This time on the power play, Perfetti showed great patience as Radko Gudas sprawled out to try and stop a centring pass to Dubois. Perfetti was able to manoeuvre around the Panthers defenceman before feeding Dubois for his 18th.

“I definitely think the more you play, the more you get comfortable, the more confidence you get,” Perfetti said. ‘Game by game it’s getting a little better but obviously, it’s a pretty tough league and it’s going take time to learn. I definitely feel it’s slowing down by a hair and getting a little more confidence to make some plays.

Tuesday was Perfetti’s ninth game this season, the maximum he can play before the first year his entry-level contract to slide.

It would take an act of God to keep him out of the lineup on Thursday when the Vancouver Canucks come to town.

The 20-year-old has simply forced general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff’s hand with his solid play. Interim head coach Dave Lowry has him playing on Winnipeg’s second line (and arguably their best line) with Connor and Dubois, where he’s fit in seamlessly.

“I’m enjoying every day, learning and having a great time,” Perfetti said. “It’s a privilege to be here and it’s a dream come true, so I’m not taking it for granted. Just loving every second of it.”

Dubois’ marker would be as far as Winnipeg would get.

Verhaeghe’s game-winner came at 9:42 after he tapped in a rebound after Aaron Ekblad’s blast from the point was stopped by Hellebuyck.

Bennett’s 18th at 12:10 of the third sealed Winnipeg’s fate.

“We’ll go back and we’ll get back into it and I say this, we’ve got some young guys that don’t have a lot of NHL experience that are playing critical minutes for us,” Lowry said. “It’s all about learning. There are going to be mistakes but it’s not just the young guys. We’ve got to just clean up some of the details in our game.”
