UTRGV (1-6) took a tough 2-5 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi its last time out. The Vaqueros are hungry to get back on their home court and battle UIW (5-5).
The Vaqueros and Cardinals have played each other tight in the past. UIW holds a slim 6-4 lead in the all-time series and won the last match between the two programs 4-3 one year ago. The Cardinals are riding a four-match winning streak into this contest, but UTRGV head coach Nathan Robinson said his team is ready to fight for a victory.
"I think it's going to be a great fight. I know both teams are going to bring a lot of energy," Robinson said. "I know we're going to be up for a fight and I know our guys are ready to take a fight to somebody as well. We're hungry after our last matchup with Corpus."
Senior Carlo Izurieta and junior Misha Kvantaliani were the only Vaqueros to win matches on Tuesday against TAMUCC. Both have played incredibly tough at the top of the UTRGV lineup.
Izurieta is an animated student-athlete who brings tons of emotion to the court. He wants to see more consistency in the energy and positivity UTRGV plays with and thinks improving that can be the key to defeating the Cardinals.
"I do believe we have great talent all around. What we're working on is trying to improve our energy," Izurieta said. "We do have good energy, but it's better if we maintain it constantly and every day we come out and have incredible energy."
Robinson said the Vaqueros are also working on the mental side of their game. He's hoping to see the student-athletes execute their game styles and control matches better against UIW.
"We're really working on the stuff between the ears right now. Just having more belief, more comfort in our game style," Robinson said. "We really want that to be our fact, that we're taking our game style to the opponent. Our goal is to take the match from them, not hope that they give us the match."
