Viking Golf Team Opens Spring Season At Match Play Competition - Portland State Vikings

Portland State Golf will open its spring season on Feb. 14-15, playing in the Mountain Classic Matchplay in Palm Desert, CA. The Vikings will be one of eight teams taking part in a rare match play event. It will be the first of five spring events for the Vikings leading into the Big Sky Conference Championship, Apr. 18-20, at Talking Stick Golf Club in Phoenix, AZ.
 
As the number-six seed in the event, PSU will take on third-seeded Utah Valley. That match begins at 7:45 a.m. on Monday. A second Monday match will take place some time between 11:30 a.m. and 1:09 p.m. based on opening match results. Tuesday morning rounds begin at 7 a.m.
 
Initial seeding in the match play tournament is based on Golfstat.com team rankings.
 
The Vikings will start the same five as the past fall events, with seniors McKenna Maser and Windy Huang, sophomores Katie Harris and Mariana Garcia Rosette and freshman Mari Nakamura teeing it up.
 
"We are really looking forward to the spring," said first-year coach Bill Winter. "The team has worked hard over the winter and we are off to a good start with our preparation. I feel as a team we are in a good place and looking forward to getting to some warm weather and seeing what we can do."
 

MOUNTAIN CLASSIC MATCH PLAY

Play: 3 matches in an eight-team bracket. There will be two 18-hole matches on Monday, and one 18-hole match on Tuesday. Winners advance in the championship bracket and losers move on to the consolation bracket.
