Rangers match disrupted by protests against proposed Old Firm game in Australia - The Athletic

Rangers’ match against Dundee has been disrupted by protests against a proposed Old Firm derby in Australia this winter.

The game was stopped three times before half-time, with fans irate at the club’s participation in the Sydney Super Cup.

The clubs are set to meet outside of Scotland for the first time in their history as part of a mini-tournament to be played in Australia.

Both the Scottish Premiership and the A-League will be taking a break due to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Taking place at Dundee’s Dens Park, the match was first halted immediately prior to kick-off. Then, as soon as it restarted, Rangers fans threw on ticker tape and streamers, causing a further three minute delay.

Later in the first-half, play was stopped once more when fans threw tennis balls onto the pitch.

Protests continued upon the resumption of the second-half.

A banner reading “You’ll jump into bed with Glasgow Celtic” was on display in the Rangers end, referencing the lyrics to the chant: “We’ll jump on the heads of Glasgow Celtic”.

Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson was also the recipient of several shouts from the stand.

James Tavernier missed a penalty for the away side as Dundee took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break. They eventually fought back to win 2-1, with Connor Goldson thumping home a late winner.
