IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team are tied at one a-piece against No. 10 UC San Diego and were challenged in a rubber match Wednesday. The Eagles came out fighting but the Tritons came out with the win with scores 25-20, 19-25, 26-28, and 28-30.
Eagles kill leader Owen Chun was able to contribute vastly in that category, putting down 18 kills. Not only did Chun contribute in a big way offensively but also came up huge for the Green and Gold defensively with six blocks where three of them were solo. The three solo blocks puts him in the record book tied for fourth along with four other alumni Eagles.
Senior Jonathan Carlson posted his third double-double night with 11 kill and digs. Carlson led the Eagles with two aces and two blocks. Logan Glave put up four kills and digs while Erik Boisvert had three kills. Gil Herold came into the game and made an immediate impact for the Green and Gold with two kills and five blocks where two were solo.
Mason Mullins was the secret weapon to the offense, hitting .700 on seven kills on 10 attempts with no errors. McLain Mott was distributing the ball to the offensive and finished with 36 assists. Freshman libero Danny Smithers recorded a career-high of nine digs throughout the match.
In the beginning of the match, the Tritons came out strong first until Carlson went to the back line to go on a four point run which brought the Eagles up by one. Another run from Mullins at the service line and a couple hitting errors from UC San Diego extended the lead 21-18. The front row for CUI closed out the first set 25-20. The second set was no different for UCSD as they came out to a 6-0 lead and did not allow CUI back into the set.
CUI went toe-to-toe with UCSD in the third until Chun had back-to-back solo blocks to take a 13-9 lead over UCSD. The score toggled between the two teams until UCSD took a one point lead and Eagles caught a break with a service error to make it 23 each. Two kills from Chun kept the Eagles in the set to go the distance until the Tritons secured it with a kill and block. The Eagles came out to a 3-0 lead early in the fourth and kept a one point lead for more than half the set. Another kill from Chun kept the score tied at 18. UCSD had a one point lead but Triton errors and kills from the Eagles kept the game alive. Tritons were able to close out the set and match with a 30-28 score.
The Eagles will move forward to its conference games against BYU in Provo, Utah on Friday, Mar. 11 and Saturday, Mar. 12 with both slated at a 6 p.m. start time. CUI will be back in the CU Arena on Thursday, Mar. 17 as they take on Ottawa Kansas at 7 p.m.
