Clermont vs. PSG live score, updates, highlights & lineups from Ligue 1 match - Sporting News

Kylian Mbappe and Neymar both hit hat tricks as Paris Saint-Germain opened up a 15-point lead at the top of Ligue 1 with an emphatic 6-1 win away from home to Clermont.

The result means the Parc des Princes outfit are within touching distance of winning the French title with closest challengers Marseille at home to Montpellier on Sunday.

It took PSG just six points to open the scoring with Neymar firing into the back of the net after some pinball inside the Clermont box with Messi setting up the Brazilian.

Mbappe grabbed his first of the night, and PSG's second of the match, after 19 minutes, racing in behind to lift a finish over the goalkeeper following an excellent pass by Messi on the edge of the box.

MOREMbappe, Neymar, Messi all score in same game for first time for PSG

Clermont gave themselves a lifeline at the end of the first half when Jodel Dossou followed in at the back post to convert from close range after Saif-Eddine Khaoui beat his man on the left wing.

This gave the home team the encouragement they needed to take the game to PSG with Clermont pushing for an equaliser before the visitors regained their two-goal lead through a Neymar penalty.

Mbappe scored a fourth goal for PSG soon after with the French forward completing his hat trick with a stunning strike into the far corner of the net on 81 minutes.

And Neymar joined his teammate in scoring a hat trick of his own with Mbappe squaring for the Brazilian to finish into the back of an empty net.

Best in the world?

Mbappe has now scored seven goals in his last three games for PSG with the French forward also registering five assists and winning two assists for good measure.

Many have talked about Mbappe as a future Ballon d'Or winner, but what if the 23-year-old is already the best player in the world?

Some might point to Robert Lewandowski, Mohamed Salah and Karim Benzema as contenders for that unofficial, unwritten accolade, but Mbappe might be more devastating than any of them at this moment in time.

Hints of what could have been

This was the sort of performance most expected of PSG after luring Messi to the club last summer. The Argentine didn't find the back of the net against Clermont, but was the supply line to both Mbappe and Neymar as PSG thumped their opponents.

PSG have now won back-to-back Ligue 1 fixtures by an aggregate scoreline of 11-2 with Mbappe, Messi and Neymar all impressive against Lorient and Clermont.

Mauricio Pochettino has struggled to get his team playing this kind of free-flowing, attacking football all season, but with the pressure off after the exit from the Champions League PSG are offering a hint of what could have been.

Ramos return comes too late

Handed his first start since mid-January, Sergio Ramos was a solid presence for PSG at the back and even gave them threat in the opposition box from set pieces.

This is the sort of thing PSG signed the veteran centre back for. However, it's too little too late for Ramos whose first season in the French capital must be considered a disappointment.

Of course, this is largely down to the 36-year-old's injury record. If he can find fitness over the final stage of the season and carry that into next season, Ramos could still be an important figure for PSG.

90 mins: Clermont sub - Billong OFF, Ogier ON

88 mins: There was a point in this second half at which PSG looked to have a real fight on their hands. However, Mbappe, Messi and Neymar took a grip of things and there was nothing Clermont could do to stop them. The scoreline is slightly harsh on the home team.

85 mins: PSG sub - Mendes, Verratti and Hakimi OFF, Bernat, Ebimbe and Michut ON

83 mins: GOAL! Clermont 1 PSG 6 (Neymar 83') - PSG can't stop scoring now! Mbappe is released in behind, not for the first time, and he squares for Neymar who rolls the finish into the back of the net.

81 mins: GOAL! Clermont 1 PSG 5 (Mbappe 81') - There's the hat trick! And it's a hat trick of assists for Messi as well! He played the pass out to Mbappe, but the Frenchman still had so much to do to find the back of the net. He guided the finish into the far corner!

78 mins: PSG sub - Kimpembe OFF, Kehrer ON

74 mins: GOAL! Clermont 1 PSG 4 (Mbappe 74') - If the result wasn't certain before, it is now. The pass over the top by Neymar was incredible, Mbappe controlled it, rounded the goalkeeper and squeezed home the finish from a tight angle.

72 mins: GOAL! Clermont 1 PSG 3 (Neymar pen 72') - That goal should secure all three points for PSG who breathe a sight of relief. Clermont had been pressing for an equaliser, but Neymar converts from the spot to restore the away team's two-goal advantage.

71 mins: PENALTY KICK TO PSG! Mbappe bursts into the box, the slide tackle comes in from Zedadka and the referee points to the spot!

70 mins: Chance for Kyei! He's only just on off the bench, but Kyei is already getting involved for Clermont. His shot is blocked at the near post, but the flag is eventually raised for offside. The home team are pushing hard for an equalising goal.

69 mins: PSG sub - Danilo OFF, Wijnaldum ON

68 mins: Clermont sub - Berthomier and Khaoui OFF, Kyei and Du Cunha ON

67 mins: DISALLOWED! Messi has the ball in the back of the net, heading home from close range after good work by Mbappe on the left, but the flag was raised against the latter. That was very nearly the goal to secure all three points for PSG.

65 mins: Berthomier shoots! Clermont are pressuring PSG with Berthomier getting the shot away on goal from a tight angle. Donnarumma was able to get down to make the save.

63 mins: Donnarumma gets lucky! The PSG goalkeeper was very nearly caught out of his goal as a ball was played over the top, but the Italian recovered and pounced on the ball before the Clermont attacker could make him pay for his mistake.

62 mins: As I was saying about Messi's role as a creator in this PSG team...

60 mins: Good chance! The ball was feed into Neymar, he shaped for the shot into the far corner of the net, but got it all wrong and scoops the ball well over the crossbar. The home fans enjoyed that one!

57 mins: Will Pochettino make changes to his team soon? PSG started strongly, but they aren't as dominant now as they were in the first period of the first half. Could we see Icardi come off the bench at some point?

55 mins: BOOKING! Neymar becomes the first player to be shown a yellow card in this match.

53 mins: Ramos gets up from the back for a corner kick, the delivery from Neymar is a good one, but the veteran centre back couldn't quite direct his effort on target and the ball flies harmlessly over the bar.

51 mins: It is notable that PSG have attempted to slow down the pace of the match in the early stages of the second half. They don't want to be caught out in quick transition. Clermont have been able to find space in behind the full backs.

48 mins: PSG looked to be in full control of this match after scoring two goals in the first 19 minutes, but Clermont have found a foothold in the contest and will have ambitions of completing their comeback in this second half.

45 mins: The second half is under way! PSG have a 2-1 advantage over Clermont!

45+1 mins: HALF TIME! Clermont 1 PSG 2 - The away team deserve to be ahead, they have been the better side, but Clermont responded well to conceding two early goals and will feel they can continue their comeback after the interval.

45 mins: There will be one minute of stoppage time played at the end of the first half.

44 mins: Neymar denied! That was an excellent effort by Neymar who fired a strike towards the near post from just inside the box, but Desmas was equal to it and makes the save!

42 mins: GOAL! Clermont 1 (Dossou 42') PSG 2 - Clermont have a lifeline in the game! They created the opportunity well down the left side with the ball played to the back post and Dossou was on hand to turn it home from close range! The hosts deserve something.

40 mins: Well over the top! The ball fell to Gueye 25 yards out, he had Mbappe, Messi and Neymar ahead of him in good positions, for some reason he takes on the shot and gets it all wrong!

38 mins: Ramos does well to win a header under pressure from a freekick, although Donnarumma was behind the Spanish defender. Clermont are certainly applying more pressure now than at any other stage of the match so far.

36 mins: Neymar has played well in this first half for PSG who have used the Brazilian as an outlet...

33 mins: This is a bit better from Clermont. This is their best period of the match with Berthomier winning a header inside the box, but he was never really going to threaten Donnarumma with that effort.

30 mins: Offside! Just for a moment, Hakimi looked to be in behind the Clermont backline, but the flag was raised against the PSG full back.

27 mins: Mbappe and Messi appear to be on the same wavelength, as proven by this stat...

25 mins: Messi has two assists in the first half of this match and that demonstrates the role he is playing for this PSG team. He is more of a creator than a scorer!

22 mins: That goal means Mbappe has now found the back of the net 29 times for PSG in all competitions. Keep in mind that the French forward is set to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract will expire!

19 mins: GOAL! Clermont 0 PSG 2 (Mbappe 19') - What a sensational goal by PSG! Messi controlled a pass on his chest and played a wonderful through ball for Mbappe who lifted a finish over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

18 mins: This is already shaping up to be a very difficult evening for Clermont. They are struggling to get on the ball and when they do win possession back they don't have much in the way of an outlet to get up the pitch.

13 mins: Messi shoots... over! PSG move the ball forward down the left wing, the pass is played to Messi on the edge of the box, he shifts the ball on to his left foot, but fires over the top when he should have hit the target!

10 mins: The officials had a long look at Neymar's goal, but decided there was no infringement and the strike was allowed to stand. PSG have the early advantage.

8 mins: The Clermont players are furious that the goal has been allowed to stand because there was a player inside the box when Neymar scored. He was playing everyone onside!

6 mins: GOAL! Clermont 0 PSG 1 (Neymar 6') - There's the opening goal and Neymar has found the back of the net! The ball pinged around the box, then Messi fed Neymar and the Brazilian fired home into the back of the net!

5 mins: PSG have made a positive start to this match with the home team controlling possession in the early stages. Ramos is dictating things from the back.

2 mins: This is a very important match for Clermont. They are hovering just above the bottom three in the Ligue 1 table and so anything here would be a bonus in their efforts to avoid the drop.

1 min: The match is under way! PSG are in their white away kit with Clermont in red and blue.

5 mins to K/O: The two teams are out on the pitch at the Gabriel Montpied Stadium this evening. Not long until kick-off!
