NORMAL, Ill. – The 2022 Missouri Valley Conference regular season comes to an end on Friday for Illinois State, as the Redbirds (13-6) host Valparaiso (10-9) at the Gregory Street Courts, with first serve set for 2 p.m. ISU will honor its three seniors Laura Fitzgerald, Penelope Abreu and Maria Potsi following the match.
"It's good to be able to finish the regular season at home," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said. "Valparaiso is a much-improved team, and it will take a great team effort to pick up that win and have a great Senior Day for Laura, Penelope and Maria."
The Redbirds are coming off a split of matches last weekend in Iowa against league-leading Drake and UNI. The Redbirds dropped a tough 4-3 decision to the Bulldogs on Saturday, but then bounced back with a 5-2 win over UNI on Sunday. Sophomore Tijana Zlatanovic led the way for the Redbirds, with a pair of singles wins at No. 1 that earned her MVC Singles Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season.
Valpo begins a weekend of tennis in Illinois against the Redbirds on Friday, before wrapping up the regular season in Peoria on Saturday. The Beacons have won their last two matches overall and are coming off a road dispatching of host Missouri State last Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Missouri. Valpo swept the doubles matches before prevailing in five of the six singles showdowns to go over .500 on the season and in MVC play.
