Live match blog - Super Kings vs Royals 47th Match 2021 - Cricket Insights - ESPNcricinfo

Chennai Super Kings have sealed their playoff spot and will be eyeing a top-two finish. For Rajasthan Royals, a win will keep them in the hunt - 14 points could lead to qualification without NRR coming into play. A loss could complicate things for them, as their NRR is the poorest among the teams in contention.

You'll find ball-by-ball commentary here in English, and here in Hindi.

If you're in the USA, you can watch today's game on ESPN+ in English, as well as in Hindi.

Dube continues assault

After RR lose their openers, Shivam Dube is promoted to No. 4. The plan seems clear: captain Sanju Samson to bat through while Dube, Phillips and Miller hit at the other end. And this seems like a good pitch for power hitters such as Dube and Miller. RR reach 119 in 10 overs, needing 71 in the back 10. Will they be thinking of net run rate now? Their net run rate is pretty poor as of now, but if they can win with three or four overs to spare, they could give themselves a push.

Some records

RR scored 81 for 1 in the Powerplay. It is

1. RR's highest score in the Powerplay in the IPL.

2. The highest Powerplay score for any team this IPL.

3. The highest Powerplay score against CSK in any IPL match.

4. The highest Powerplay score in any IPL match in the UAE.

Jaiswal 50 off 19

In a sensational start to the chase, Yash Jaiswal is going after every bowler, and the pitch has revealed itself to be a batting beauty. Three sixes, six fours in just 19 balls. At the other end, Evin Lewis manages two sixes and two fours in 12 balls to give RR a 77-run opening stand, which has been ended in the sixth over.

Gaikwad hundred takes CSK to 189

High drama as Gaikwad nearly runs out of balls available to get to his hundred. He gets just the three balls in the last two overs as Ravindra Jadeja runs riot at the other end, but Gaikwad smacks the last ball of the innings for a six to end up with an unbeaten 101 off 60 balls. Jadeja gets 32 off 15. Last six overs go for 89.

Gaikwad: first 50 off 43 balls, next 51 off 17. Is this a match-winning innings or was the first half too slow for these conditions? We will soon find out.

Orange cap for Gaikwad

RR take wickets, but CSK will keep going hard

Rahul Tewatia ends with three wickets but his four overs have gone for 39. That's how CSK bat these days. If anything, they have surprisingly had two soft overs today. One of them was Samson went for pace as soon as Moeen came out to bat, and then Glenn Phillips sneaking in one cheap over of offbreaks. CSK are 117 for 3 in 15 overs, and now in the middle are a set Gaikwad and the man with the highest strike-rate this IPL, Ambati Rayudu.

Yet another fifty for Gaikwad

All left

CSK have made their way to 46 for 0 at the end of the Powerplay, but the standout thing about it is they faced only left-arm quicks. This is the first time in 10 years that all six Powerplay overs in an IPL innings have been bowled by left-arm quicks. Before 2011, Delhi Daredevils used to do this frequently with their attack centred on Ashish Nehra and Dirk Nannes. Pradeep Sangwan would keep chipping in. They did so seven times in the 2009 IPL. Delhi might not have won an IPL (yet), but they have often been ahead of the curve. This is just another example.

A quick look at the scenarios

Of course both teams want to win, but what are the permutations and combinations here?

For RR A win will keep them in the hunt as 14 points could lead to qualification without NRR coming into play. Even with 12 points, Royals could go through as the fourth team if KKR, PBKS and MI lose all their remaining games and stay on 10 points each. That, though, is an unlikely scenario. If it comes down to NRR, Royals will struggle as their rate is the worst among the teams in contention.

For CSK

A win will almost ensure a top-two finish. Currently, it's possible for three teams to finish on 20 or more points, but CSK's NRR of 1.002 is so far ahead of RCB's -0.200 that it is almost impossible for CSK to fall behind. Even if RCB win each of their last three matches by 40 runs (after scoring 160), their NRR will only improve to 0.29. Thus, a win here will pretty much ensure CSK finish in the top two.

Changes aplenty for RR

Sanju Samson is hilarious at the tosses. Every time he wins one, his instinctive reaction is to go for the coin before even informing everyone what he wants to do. And you don't get to keep the IPL coin either.

Anyway, Samson has won the toss and his side Rajasthan Royals will be fielding. They have had good news from the earlier match with Mumbai Indians losing, which means if Royals win tonight, they are one of the four teams tied in the fourth position with two matches to go. They have made five changes: Mahipal Lomror, Liam Livingstone, Riyan Parag, Kartik Tyagi and Chris Morris make way for Shivam Dube, Glenn Phillips, Akash Singh, David Miller and Mayank Markande.

CSK have qualified but they will like to their winning form going to ensure they end up in two two. Right not they are tied with DC at 18 points, but they have this game in hand. They are still favourites to make the top two, but they need to watch out for a late surge from RCB, who are placed third, two wins behind them but with a game in hand. They have made changers, bringing in KM Asif and Sam Curran for Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo.

Chennai Super Kings 1 RD Gaikwad, 2 F du Plessis, 3 MM Ali, 4 SK Raina, 5 AT Rayudu, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 RA Jadeja, 8 SM Curran, 9 SN Thakur, 10 JR Hazlewood, 11 KM Asif

Rajasthan Royals 1 E Lewis, 2 YBK Jaiswal, 3 SV Samson (capt. & wk), 4 S Dube, 5 GD Phillips, 6 DA Miller, 7 R Tewatia, 8 Akash Singh, 9 M Markande, 10 C Sakariya, 11 Mustafizur Rahman

PREVIEW: York United vs. HFX Wanderers — Match #82 – Canadian Premier League - Canadian Premier League

2021 CPL regular season — Match #82
York United vs. HFX Wanderers FC
October 3, 2021 at 1 pm ET/2 pm AT
York Lions Stadium, Toronto, Ontario
Watch Live: OneSoccer.ca & TELUS Ch. 980 // Tickets available here

MATCH PREVIEW

Neck and neck in the table, York United and HFX Wanderers FC have a lot on the line when they hit the pitch on Sunday.

Both teams are in good form heading into the match and their recent results in the Canadian Premier League mirror each other with three wins and two draws over their last five outings. However, they each lost their recent Canadian Championship quarterfinal matches (HFX Wanderers 1-3 CF Montréal and Toronto FC 4-0 York United).

The HFX Wanderers have a slight upper hand heading into the match with back-to-back home wins against FC Edmonton and Atlético Ottawa and they will no doubt aim to make it three in a row. Leading scorer João Morelli continues to be in top form scoring all the club’s goals over the last two games. His record-breaking tally now sits at 14 so far this season.

Coach Stephen Hart knows his side can expect a difficult clash on Sunday, but he hopes their good fortune can continue on the road. “Playing on the road always has its complications but as we said earlier on, at some point we need to try and steal some points on the road. We’ve been getting the points from a tying standpoint but it would be nice to come away with a win,” he said.

“[York] are one of the teams that are fighting to get into that playoff along with us … it’s important that we do our best to put a little pressure on them.”

York United meanwhile will also aim to keep the momentum flowing after getting back in the win column with a 2-1 win over Valour. A brace from 18-year-old Lowell Wright saw the team pull off a comeback win to keep all three points at home.  Coach Jimmy Brennan outlined the game plan will be the same against the Wanderers saying his team must make York Lions Stadium “very, very difficult” for their familiar opponents.

“The players know each other inside out now, when you play against each other so much you start to realize everybody’s tendencies and what they look to do,” he said. “I expect it to be a difficult match, entertaining, and one that hopefully we get an edge in.”

“You’re looking for that little bit of magic in certain players out on that pitch to win you the game.”

Looking at the table, only one point separates fourth-place York United from the fifth-place Wanderers and Sunday’s match is the final meeting between these two sides in the regular season. Both teams, as such, will aim to capitalize on the chance to grab three vital points to try and secure a place in the playoffs.

But with clashes in the past historically ending in draws, will either side seize the opportunity at York Lions Stadium?

3 THINGS TO WATCH:

  • Defensive duties a priority: Stacked with a surplus of attacking talent, both York United and the Wanderers’ squads can threaten any defence in the Canadian Premier League. João Morelli, Max Ferrari, Stefan Karajovanovic, Álvaro Rivero, Cory Bent and the like can all influence the game within a split second. However, the key to the clash on Sunday lies in defence. Stifling any threat from the opposition will be crucial for both sides and the defenders are sure to be kept on their toes. For Hart, the recent performances from right-back Alejandro Portal have been a boost for the Wanderers. “He’s been really good for us but more importantly, he settled in really, really quickly,” he said. “I’m a little surprised at how well he’s settled in but he’s done very well for us and I’m pleased because we desperately needed it.” Brennan also highlighted a need for York’s squad to stay focused over 90 minutes. “Communication has to be there on the day, that’s all players talking, being aware of their surroundings,” he said. “[HFX Wanderers] have some quality players that do have that tendency to find these good little holes and good little pockets. But it’s up to us to be disciplined now.”
  • Response time key: If either side can open the scoring early on, how the other reacts will play a key role in how things play out in Toronto as both York United and the HFX Wanderers are known to impact the game late in the second half. In fact, seven goals over the last five clashes between these two teams have come around the 80-minute mark or after. Whoever soaks up the half-time talk better coming out into the second 45 minutes could be the team who ends up holding on for the win. Hart specifically highlighted the Wanderers must “concentrate well, especially in the late moments of the game.”
  • Can Morelli extend his record?: As it’s been all season, fans will be watching to see if the Wanderers’ goal machine can continue his top form. After breaking the scoring record against Atlético Ottawa last week, just how far can Morelli go? The sky is the limit for the 25-year-old who time and time again entertains on the pitch. Yet regardless if he finds the net against York, Brennan knows Morelli will still be one of the stars they must always watch out for. “You have to be aware of where he is on the pitch at all times, you can’t give him an inch. You constantly have to be looking over your shoulder to make sure you know,” he said.

KEY QUOTES

“When you’re in the position in the table that we are right now it’s not about looking behind it’s looking forward and looking at that next team we can catch … now [we have] our eye on Forge FC who are sitting above us. That’s the next team we want to catch.” – York United head coach Jimmy Brennan

“On the table you’re just looking at the team in the front of you to give you that incentive, that character, to go get them.” – York United head coach Jimmy Brennan

“Yes, Morelli is getting the praise for the goals, but somebody had to set him up, the balls had to come from somewhere, it’s a team thing. Morelli is taking the responsibility of scoring the goals [but] all four wide players have been very good, the full-backs and the wide attackers.” – HFX Wanderers FC head coach Stephen Hart

“And that’s important because, really and truly, what we’re actually going through, we need players to step up and endure and suffer for the result. All credit to the players, they’ve been fantastic, they’ve done it without complaint.” — HFX Wanderers FC head coach Stephen Hart

Giants clinch at least tie in NL West, match team wins mark - Toronto Star

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants couldn’t celebrate a division title yet — not with the rival Dodgers still going win for win in the NL West race.

San Francisco clinched at least a tie pursuing its first West title since 2012 by matching the franchise record with its 106th win, beating the San Diego Padres 3-0 Friday night before turning attention to Los Angeles’ home game against Milwaukee.

“They’re probably more frustrated with us because we’re ahead and we keep winning,” Giants winning pitcher Anthony DeSclafani said.

Darin Ruf hit a first-inning home run and Mike Yastrzemski added an RBI single to send San Francisco on its way to a seventh straight win, and then the Giants waited on the Dodgers’ victorious 8-6 result against the NL Central champion Brewers. A Dodgers loss would have ensured San Francisco the division crown outright over the eight-time defending West winners and reigning World Series champions. If the teams finish with the same record, they’ll play a tiebreaker game.

“Honestly, it was all about not trying to fend them off,” Yastrzemski said.

Now, San Francisco can settle this on its own.

“We’re just expecting to play a meaningful game tomorrow,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “It’s pretty simple, straightforward for us. That was our expectation all along and we’ll be prepared for that.”

San Francisco went through a quick congratulatory handshake line on the diamond. Then, the big screen scoreboard started airing the Brewers-Dodgers game and fans were invited to stay put. Many did so for a short time — while some who stayed cheered the Brewers and chanted, “Beat LA! Beat LA!”

LaMonte Wade Jr. added a sacrifice fly as these surprising Giants (106-54) continue to leave their mark in the franchise’s storied history — for a special regular season, anyway. One that San Francisco hardly got picked to win in the talented West with the Dodgers and Padres considered the favorites.

After going 29-31 during the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season in Gabe Kapler’s first year as manager to becoming contenders again at last, the group delivered a stunning turnaround. The Giants navigated through injuries to many key players for long stretches. Brandon Belt, sidelined now by a fractured left thumb, hit 29 home runs and shined alongside fellow World Series veterans Brandon Crawford and Buster Posey.

San Francisco Giants' Anthony DeSclafani pitches against the San Diego Padres during the first inning of a baseball game in San Francisco, Friday, Oct. 1, 2021.

Now, they believe they’re poised for another deep October run like those champion Giants teams of 2010, ‘12 and ’14.

“We’re a pretty workmanlike group, we’ve demonstrated that consistently,” Kapler said. “We don’t get too high or too low, focus on the step right in front of us.”

Posey played in his fourth straight game behind the plate, to which Kapler said, “Buster wants to be in there every day at this point.“

The bullpen delivered again, and newcomers like Wade consistently came through.

“It’s pretty simple just doing what we’ve done all year, getting quality at-bats from everyone in the lineup, getting really quality outings out of our starters and our bullpen’s been amazing and playing good defense outside of that first inning yesterday,” Ruf said. “It’s just the recipe we’ve used all year.”

DeSclafani (13-7) struck out three and didn’t walk a batter, allowing four hits over five scoreless innings. The right-hander won for just the second time in eight starts since Aug. 13. Camilo Doval, the fourth Giants reliever, finished for his third save.

“We’ve been winning all year,” DeSclafani said. “We can win and control the outcome ourselves.”

Fernando Tatis Jr. was thrown out at home to end the sixth and San Diego couldn’t capitalize on nine hits for Pedro Avila (0-1) in his second major league appearance and first since 2019.

“First inning obviously his pitch count got up to 35, extended inning a little bit,” manager Jayce Tingler said. “But after that I thought he settled in and really made some big pitches with guys in scoring position.”

WILLIE MAC AWARD

Wade received the “Willie Mac” Award named for late Hall of Famer Willie McCovey. The honor is voted on by the players, coaches and training staff to recognize the team’s most inspirational player on the field and in the clubhouse.

Traded from the Twins in early February, Wade has produced a career season while also spreading goodwill in the community. His proud mother, Emily, threw out a ceremonial first pitch to her son.

“I feel truly blessed and honored to receive this award,” Wade said. “... And of course I’d like to thank Willie, who I know is watching from above.”

BRYANT SITS

Kris Bryant, 3 for 25 over his last seven games with six strikeouts, sat for this one.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Padres: 3B Manny Machado had a rest day. “We’re going to have some guys have a day or two down,” Tingler said. “Just getting Manny off his feet today.”

Giants: LHP Scott Kazmir went on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain that he injured running to cover first in the initial inning of his start Thursday night that forced him to exit. ... Closer Jake McGee could return this weekend from a right oblique strain. “It’s all prioritizing his health,” Kapler said. ... RHP Johnny Cueto rested after tossing 2 1/3 innings in his first career relief outing Thursday.

ROSTER MOVE

The Giants recalled LHP Sammy Long from Triple-A Sacramento.

UP NEXT

RHP Joe Musgrove (11-9, 3.22 ERA) goes into his Saturday start following two straight no-decisions but having won his last decision Sept. 15 at San Francisco. The Giants counter with RHP Kevin Gausman (14-6, 2.87) looking to snap a three-start winless stretch in which he’s 0-1.

`Runners Fall in First Big West Home Match - California State University at Bakersfield Athletics - CSU Bakersfield Athletics

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The first-ever Big West Conference home match for the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team did not go the way the Roadrunners drew it up. CSUB suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of CSUN Friday night in the Icardo Center.

Bakersfield fought hard in each set (23-25, 20-25, 19-25), but the visiting Matadors combined hot hitting (.297 as a team) and a stout defense at the net (8.0 team blocks) to earn the road sweep over the `Runners.

On the evening, Bakersfield's offense was led by redshirt sophomore Hana Makonova, who tallied 11 kills against the Matadors. Junior setter Seleisa Elisaia recorded another double-double for CSUB, registering 29 assists and 11 digs on the match. Freshman Samia Bhakta added nine kills on .400 hitting in her Icardo Center debut.

In the first set, the two teams found themselves tied nine times including at 22-22 after Milica Vukobrat sent a kill to the floor. CSUN won three of the final four points to seal a 25-23 victory and to take an early, 1-0 lead on the match.

The Matadors raced away from the `Runners in the middle of Set 2, but Bakersfield pulled within two points at 20-18. Once again, CSUN surged to the end, winning five of the final seven rallies for a 25-20 win.

The final set was the close early on with the two teams tying the score 10 times. The Matadors sprinted to the end and closed out the victory with a 25-19 win in the third set.

CSUB (8-3, 1-2 BWC) will return to the Icardo Center on Saturday, Oct. 2, for one more Big West game at home before hitting the road for four-straight matches. First serve against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday is scheduled for 5 p.m. (PT) on the Kern Schools Court.

Panthers Match Program Record with Win at Radford - HPU Panthers

Site: Radford, Va. (Dedmon Center)
Score: High Point 3, Radford 0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-15)
Records: HPU 12-5 (4-0 Big South), RU 2-13 (0-3 Big South)
Next HPU Event: Friday, October 8, 2021 -- vs. Campbell (Millis Center, High Point, N.C.), 7 p.m.

RADFORD, Va. -- The High Point University volleyball team matched the program record for most consecutive Big South wins with a three-set victory against Radford University on Friday evening (Oct. 1).

The win was HPU's 20th conference win in a row, matching the program record set from the 2016 to 2018 seasons. The Panthers' current streak is now the third-longest in the history of the Big South, one behind Radford's streak of 21 straight from 2000-2002 and 31 behind Winthrop's conference record of 51 consecutive Big South victories that spanned parts of five seasons from 2003-2007.

High Point's defense was the driving force behind the win as the Panthers held Radford to hitting just .019 in the match and forced the Highlanders to hit negative in two of the three. It's the second-lowest HPU has held an opponent this season and the second match in the last three that High Point has held its opponent to hitting under .020. The Purple and White totaled 10 blocks in the match, led by freshman Jackie Joyce with six, to record double-digit blocks for the fourth time this season and the second time in their last three matches. Madison Smith and Gabrielle Idlebird each had four blocks, with Idlebird picking up a solo stuff, while Maria Miggins pitched in two.

Dylan Maberry led the offense with 12 kills to be the only Panther in double digits. Smith was second on the team with seven while Sydney Palazzolo had six and Miggins added five. Miggins also had 11 assists - a category that was led by Mackenzi Thornburg for the 10th match in a row with 17 helpers. Jenny Wessling was the only other player in double digits in a category with a team-best 13 digs in the match.

"I thought we started slow but it was nice to see us recover," head coach Ryan Meek said after the match. "We need to do a better job of being mentally prepared at the beginning of a match but I liked the resilience we showed in sets two and three."

The match was a milestone match for Meek as it was his 100th at the helm of the Panthers, improving his record to 71-29. It was also his 50th in the Big South and moved his conference record to 46-4 for a .920 winning percentage - the best out of any Big South volleyball head coach with at least 50 conference matches coached in league history.

Radford gave the Panthers a scare in the first set, leading 14-7 halfway through the frame. High Point clawed back and used a 7-1 run to take the lead 20-19. The Highlanders retook the lead late, 23-22, before HPU took the next three points to take the set with kills from Palazzolo and Idlebird sandwiched around an ace from Thornburg.

The second and third sets were all High Point as they took them 25-14 and 25-15. The Purple and White won the first two points in each set and never lost the lead. HPU doubled up the Highlanders 20-10 in the second set and then won five of the next nine to take the frame. An 11-1 stretch in the third set gave the Panthers a double-digit lead at 17-6 and High Point was able to cruise to the 25-15 victory to close out the match.

HPU finally has its first home match of the year next Friday (Oct. 8) when Campbell comes to town at 7 p.m. The Panthers stay home on Saturday (Oct. 9) with a match against Hampton at 2 p.m. before heading back on the road the following weekend.

Match Recap | #MINvDC - DC United

In their 27th match of the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season, D.C. United won 3-1 against Minnesota United FC after a dominant display at Audi Field. The victory propelled United into third place with 40 points in the Eastern Conference with six games remaining in the regular season.

D.C. United started quickly and set the tempo of the game early with an effective high-press. Within the first 10 minutes, Ola Kamara and Yordy Reyna both had goal scoring opportunities, but were unable to convert. At the 20-minute mark, Andy Najar took on Chase Gasper one-on-one in the box and was taken down, earning the Black-and-Red a penalty. Kamara stepped up to take it, and without hesitation converted for the 1-0 lead and his league-leading 17th goal of the season.

With five minutes left in the first half, Minnesota found an equalizer against the run of play through a set piece nodded home by United defender Bakaye Dibassy for the equalizer. The Black-and-Red answered quickly in the 45th minute when Kamara beat two men down the right wing and found Gressel in the box, who took one touch to set himself before burying a low-driven shot. United took a 2-1 lead into half-time.

United started the second half just like the first -- on the front foot -- and were rewarded with their second penalty of the night after Russell Canouse was fouled in the area. Kamara stepped up to take it, but this time was stopped by Tyler Miller. Just minutes later, Bill Hamid kept the Black-and-Red’s lead intact with an acrobatic diving stop to keep Fragapane’s header from reaching the top corner.

In the 72nd minute, the home side nearly stretched their lead to two goals as Julian Gressel picked out Donovan Pines from a free kick only to see the center back’s bicycle kick attempt whistle just by the post. The Black-and-Red did find the net for the third time just one minute later as Paul Arriola latched onto an Edison Flores pass before curling expertly into the far corner. After a VAR review however, the goal was deemed to be offside. The breakthrough for the third goal finally came in the 85th minute when Edison Flores found second-half substitute Júnior Moreno at the top of the box. The Venezuelan international’s shot deflected past Miller for his first career goal for D.C. United.

D.C. United will travel to Exploria Stadium to face-off against Orlando City SC on Saturday, October 2, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Tune into NBC Sports Washington Plus, TeleXitos, and www.dcunited.com to watch the match.
