1st Division Cowichan women top Nanaimo in last match before Island final - Cowichan Valley Citizen

Once again, the Div. 1 women’s Cowichan Piggies shared some of their players with the opposition in order to make a game of rugby 10s possible.

This time, the Nanaimo Hornets showed up at their own field with just eight players, and Cowichan sent a couple of volunteers over to make the match happen.

Nanaimo came out fast and scored in the first five minutes, but Cowichan dominated after that and ended up on the winning side of a 53-5 final score.

“We knew the players they had were all experienced and talented,” team captain Sherry Spence said. “But after that wakeup call, we turned it on.”

Carolyn Gudmundseth led Cowichan with five tries, while Nicole Woods had two and Jenna Bugden and Kaitlyn Crichton scored one apiece. Lauryn Bons kicked converts. Gudmundseth was named Player of the Match in the backs and Bristine Gibbons received the honour in the forward pack.

Cowichan and Castaway Wanderers will play in the Island final this Saturday, but the location is yet to be determined. The teams have identical records, but Cowichan sits second in the standings due to point differential, so the game should technically be played in Oak Bay. There are some questions, however, about the state of the fields at Windsor Park, so the game might be played at the Cowichan pitch on Herd Road. Watch the Citizen for updates.
