Updated AEW Revolution 2022 Match Card and Predictions - Bleacher Report

0 of 10

    Credit: All Elite Wrestling

All Elite Wrestling will return to its home base in Florida for this year's Revolution pay-per-view in Orlando on Sunday.

This will be AEW's first PPV since Full Gear on November 13, so some of the storylines we will see featured on the card have had anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few months to develop.

Four title matches have been booked for Revolution. Jade Cargill, Adam Page, Jurassic Express and Britt Baker will all put their belts on the line against the top challengers in their divisions.

The show will also feature feuds built more on personal drama than championship gold. MJF vs. CM Punk and Chris Jericho vs. Eddie Kingston could both be classified as grudge matches based on their buildups.

Let's take a look at the full card for the show and attempt to predict each outcome based on how each story has played out.

1 of 10

Here is the full lineup for Revolution as of Monday morning:

    • "Hangman" Page vs. Adam Cole (AEW World Championship)
    • Baker vs. Thunder Rosa (AEW Women's World Championship)
    • Jurassic Express vs. reDRagon vs. TBD (AEW World Tag Team Championship)
    • Jade Cargill vs. Tay Conti (TBS Championship)
    • MJF vs. CM Punk
    • Bryan Danielson vs. Jon Moxley
    • Chris Jericho vs. Eddie Kingston
    • Andrade El Idolo, Matt Hardy and Isiah Kassidy vs. Sting, Darby Allin and Sammy Guevara
    • Wardlow vs. Keith Lee vs. Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Ricky Starks vs. Orange Cassidy vs. TBD (Face of the Revolution ladder match)

2 of 10

"Hangman" Adam Page has defended his AEW world title since winning it at Full Gear, but his Revolution match against Adam Cole will be his first PPV defense.

While the former leader of The Undisputed Era is certainly worthy of holding the belt, it feels far too early for Page to drop the title after spending two years chasing it.

This is going to be a competitive match that likely lasts close to half an hour, but it's going to end with Page retaining. AEW prides itself on long reigns that increase the value of the championship, so having Page lose it this early in his run would be shocking.

    Prediction: Page retains.

3 of 10

The feud between Thunder Rosa and Britt Baker has been going on and off for a long time, so this feels like a huge matchup in comparison to some of D.M.D.'s other recent title defenses.

Rosa is one of the AEW women's division's most popular stars, and management has spent a lot of time building her up into a top contender. Now seems like the right time to pull the trigger.

As awesome as Baker has been as the champ, she is starting to spin her wheels. Her title reign has lasted for almost 10 months and has seen her defeat multiple worthy challengers. She's done everything she can do in this reign.

Booking Rosa to win would freshen up the division, hand the fans a memorable moment and give AEW what might be its only title change at the PPV. This seems like one of the safest bets on the card.

Prediction: Thunder Rosa wins the title.

4 of 10

It's slightly hard to make a prediction for a match that has not yet had all of its competitors revealed, but seeing as how Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus only won the belts on January 5, the likely outcome is them retaining.

With Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly slowly building tension with The Young Bucks, it would make sense for their feud to kick off here.

If Nick and Matt Jackson can secure that third spot in the match, Jurassic Express will be able to take advantage of the issues between the contenders and use them to retain the titles by pitting the two Elite teams against each other.

The bout will probably end with the Bucks and reDRagon fighting until Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus swoop in and score the win. This will set in motion the showdown between Cole's two favorite duos while the champs move on to face new challengers.

Prediction: Jurassic Express retains the tag titles.

5 of 10

While AEW has used long reigns for most of its titles, the TNT Championship has changed hands more frequently. Many assume the same will be the case for the TBS Championship.

That being said, there is no way Jade Cargill is losing the belt at Revolution. She is undefeated in singles competition and has wrecked every opponent she has faced for the title. She's on too much of a roll to stop her now.

Tay Conti has also had some big moments in recent months, but it doesn't feel like the right time for Cargill to lose. Conti has proved her worth, but she will have to wait a little longer before claiming gold.

This will end up being the most competitive match Cargill has had since facing Thunder Rosa and Ruby Soho in the TBS Championship tournament, but it will end the same way both of those bouts did.

    Prediction: Cargill retains the title.

6 of 10

One of the biggest non-title contests on the Revolution card will be Bryan Danielson vs. Jon Moxley. While nothing has been officially stated, Danielson is hoping to form an alliance with Moxley if he scores the win.

The submission specialist has made no secret about his desire to start a stable with Moxley in order to guide some of the young talents in AEW and run the entire locker room. It would be a powerful alliance, but there is one problem.

Moxley is one of the most popular babyfaces in the company. As soon as the crowd hears "Wild Thing" begin to play over an arena's speakers, everyone goes nuts. If he aligns with Danielson, he might have to turn heel.

Both men have a penchant for violence but in different ways. Danielson is content stretching people to their limits, while Moxley likes to make people bleed. The whole thing will come down to who controls the pace and forces the other person to work their style.

Since it seems unlikely we will see Moxley turn heel, the best outcome would be for him to win and turn down Danielson's offer. Then again, AEW could have them team up as tweeners, but it still makes more sense for Mox to get the win since so much emphasis was put on him not being able to beat Danielson in WWE.

    Prediction: Moxley defeats Danielson.

7 of 10

The newly formed alliance between Andrade and Matt Hardy seems destined to fall apart, and with Jeff Hardy recently revealing he's joining AEW, there is a good chance Matt leaves his team high and dry at the PPV.

Big Money Matt has walked out on Private Party more than once in recent weeks. There is obviously tension building within the group, and having it come to a head at the PPV is the next logical step.

Sammy Guevara, Sting and Darby Allin will score the win over El Idolo and Kassidy after Hardy gets frustrated and leaves. This will lead to a revolt from Private Party that leads to a match with the reunited Hardy Boyz. It practically writes itself.

Prediction: Guevara, Sting and Allin defeat Andrade-Hardy Family Office.

8 of 10

Chris Jericho's and Eddie Kingston's feud may have started over how Santana and Ortiz were used within The Inner Circle, but it has developed into a personal rivalry that will culminate in a match at Sunday's PPV.

While both men are known for their mic skills, Kingston and Jericho could not be more different. They have both had long careers in the same business but followed contrasting paths.

Jericho has headlined huge shows with the biggest companies in the world for the past 20 years. Kingston, on the other hand, was an indy mainstay before signing with AEW.

While logic might dictate a Jericho victory, the more satisfying outcome would be Kingston scoring the win. That way he can prove that he is capable of beating a former world champion and prove to himself that he deserves to be where he is.

Part of Kingston's charm is his everyman quality, which connects to him to the rest of us. If he beats a huge star like The Demo God, the crowd will feel like it won too.

    Prediction: Kingston defeats Jericho.

9 of 10

Lee, Hobbs, Wardlow, Starks and Cassidy have already earned their places in the Face of the Revolution ladder match, but there is one more open spot. It will either be Buddy Matthews or Pac who fills it.

This is quite possibly the card's hardest match to predict because every competitor makes sense to win from a certain perspective. However, some make slightly more sense than others.

Hobbs and Starks will work together for a little while, but at some point, they are going to have to decide which one of them gets to climb the ladder. That is what will lead to their downfall.

Wardlow has been building a lot of momentum lately, but his big moment will come when he turns on and defeats MJF. He doesn't need this victory to get there.

Cassidy will remain popular regardless of whether he wins, so that just leaves Lee and whoever fills the final spot. If AEW wants to position The Limitless One as a major player right out of the gate, giving him a victory in a ladder match is a great way to get him started.

Matthews and Pac would obviously benefit from the win too, but Lee makes more sense. He will chuck everyone over the top rope to create a few more GIFs fans can share online before he finally climbs up the ladder to claim victory.

    Prediction: Keith Lee wins.

10 of 10

CM Punk and MJF have been giving stellar promos every week during the buildup to their showdown at Revolution, but the match is what matters most.

While they seem like polar opposites on the surface, MJF and Punk have more in common than it may appear. They both work well in main event situations because they know how to pace themselves and make the big moments stand out. They only go 100 mph when they need to.

They are also both confident in their abilities. MJF is the usual cocky heel, and Punk has long called himself the best in the world. Their only goal when they hit the ring is going to be to steal the show.

Punk has only suffered one defeat in AEW, and it came at the hands of MJF with Wardlow's help. This feels like his chance to get back his win so they can build toward a rubber match.

    Prediction: CM Punk wins.

MATCH RECAP: Sounders FC falls 1-0 to Nashville SC at Lumen Field to open 2022 MLS season - SoundersFC.com

Sounders FC (0-1-0, 0 points) fell 1-0 to Nashville SC (1-0-0, 3 points) to open its 2022 MLS campaign on Sunday at Lumen Field. Nashville’s Aníbal Godoy scored the definitive goal for the visitors, as Sounders FC is now 8-6-0 all-time in regular-season openers.

Despite both sides creating a number of chances, the match remained scoreless until the 80th minute. A short clearance fell right to the feet of Nashville’s Randall Leal, who delivered a low cross from the right flank that found Godoy, who was able to finish it over a diving Stefan Frei for the game-winning score. It was the first time the two clubs have faced each other, with 2020 expansion side Nashville SC joining the Western Conference this year after starting in the Eastern Conference for its first two seasons in MLS.

Texans take winning streak to Louisiana Tech for makeup match Monday - Tarleton State University Athletics

RUSTON, La. – Tarleton and Louisiana Tech were supposed to meet three weeks ago, with the Texans riding a high and the Lady Techsters alternating wins and losses. Weather postponed the meeting on Feb. 5, and now the Texans will take on LA Tech on Monday at 2 p.m. CT in Ruston, Louisiana.

The Texans have yet to come down from that high, winners of six straight matches to improve to 7-2 this season. Somehow, they aren't the hottest team in the matchup, with Louisiana Tech victors of their last eight matches, their fifth longest winning streak in program history. They're 10-2 on the year.

Tarleton's winning streak is their longest in eight years, since Feb. 22 through March 21, 2014 (seven straight). They've swept their last two opponents, and three of their last four. Their 7-2 mark is their best start to a season through the first nine matches in six years, since 2015-16.

"The team's grit and focus on our game plan have been getting us the results we've been looking for," head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "Since the fall, the girls have locked in every time they step on the court. We are getting stronger with every opportunity given to us and it's been so fun as a coach getting to watch everyone's game grow from match to match.

"I'm extremely proud of them and know the team will continue to push hard to bring home the wins as we head into the rest of the season."

This will be Tarleton's first road match in nearly a month, last playing away from Stephenville on Jan. 29 at Belmont, a 4-3 victory. Since that intensely close contest, it's been smooth sailing for the purple and white, who have outscored their last four opponents 26-2.

The Lady Techsters have yet to lose at home this season, 8-0 at the LA Tech Tennis Complex. They've played two other Western Athletic Conference programs, losing 3-4 to Stephen F. Austin and winning 4-3 over Sam Houston. Tarleton has had two mutual opponents thus far, Montana State and McNeese State, whom Louisiana Tech swept 7-0 and 4-0, respectively.

If Tarleton and Louisiana Tech's lineups stay pat, we should see these matches:

No. 1 Deniza Marcinkevica vs. Leonie Schuknect – Marcinkevica is 5-3 in the No. 1 position, bouncing back against UTRGV's Isabelle Bahr 6-1, 6-1 after having a three-match winning streak snapped the match before. Schuknecht has won three straight to get back above .500 at 6-5. She had lost three straight before that to the No. 1's of Oral Roberts, Texas State and Sam Houston.

No. 2 Jemi Aguilar vs. Olga Bienzobas – Aguilar has hit her stride, winning three straight to get back to .500 at 4-4 after a tough 1-4 start. Aguilar has been no stranger to grinding it out, proving her toughness after being shut out in the first set against Southwestern on a frigid night to coming back for the victory, or taking a 10-point tiebreaker set to win her most recent match. Bienzobas also had a slower start, beginning the year 1-3, but rattled off four straight and is now 7-4. On Sunday against Arkansas State, she battled Najla Zukic 7-5, 7-6(3).

No. 3 Martha Makantasi vs. Najah Dawson – Dawson began the year at No. 4, where she played her first five matches, but she's played her last seven at No. 3, impressing the Lady Techsters with a 5-1 record, 8-3 overall. She'll have her work cut out for her against the reigning WAC Singles Athlete of the Week, Makantasi, who's won six straight matches, the last four in dominating fashion. The sophomore is coming off of a perfect 4-0 week with three 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at No. 3 and a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1. Makantasi is 7-2.

No. 4 Elsa Boisson vs. Ilana Tetruashvili – Like Makantasi, Boisson has been incredible of late, winning six straight matches herself to improve to 7-2 on the year. She has four straight-set wins during this run, last winning 6-3, 7-5 over UTRGV's Barbara Martinez. Tetruashvili has played the last five matches at No. 4 after beginning the season with seven straight at No. 5. She's 2-2 at No. 4 after going 6-1 at No. 5.

No. 5 Celia Vaudiau vs. Alexia Romero – Vaudiau owns the best singles record at Tarleton, 7-1 this season with seven straight wins. Her only loss was to Texas A&M's Renee McBride to open the spring in College Station. Romero has spent all year at No. 6 before sliding into No. 5 on Sunday. She's won six straight matches, 8-3 on the year.

No. 6 Natalia Komar vs. Ana Rodrigues – It's been tough sledding for the Louisiana Tech freshman, who started at No. 3, then went to No. 4, then went to No. 5, and is now at No. 6. Rodriguez is 4-7 overall, losing her first No. 6 matchup against Arkansas State's Rebecca Brody 4-6, 6-4, 0-1 (6-10). Komar has won two straight and three of her last four matches, including a No. 4 win over UTPB's Krystal Smith 6-2, 6-1. The Texan sophomore is 3-5 this year.

In doubles, it should be an epic match between presumed No. 1 pairs of Marcinkevica-Aguilar and Rodrigues-Schuknect. The Tarleton duo is 6-1 together, losing their last match against UTRGV. Louisiana Tech's top duo is 9-2, losing their last match, 2-6 against Arkansas State.

Also in doubles, Makatansi and Boisson will likely be together, sporting a 6-2 record as a pair and the most recent winners of the WAC Doubles Team of the Week award.

There is no scheduled stream or live stats for this match, as of publication Sunday evening.

Searching for a perfect match - Pique Newsmagazine

Much is made about the significance of romantic relationships—particularly during the second month of the year. It doesn’t take more than a quick scroll through Instagram on Valentine’s Day to be reminded of that. It’s the reason dating apps make up a multi-billion-dollar industry and why romantic comedies form an entire, wildly popular genre of movies: there’s a lot to love about love.

But the reality is, romantic love is just one of the most encompassing of several kinds of love people will experience over the course of their lives, from friendships to family, and even, on rare occasions, the kindness of strangers. But the true definition of unconditional love for a lot of people can be epitomized by the relationship with their pets. Dogs didn’t earn the title of man’s best friend for no reason, after all. What other creature would you still allow to live rent-free in your house (let alone take a bullet for) even if they drag you outside in the stormiest weather, rack up astronomical vet bills, and scratch up your favourite piece of furniture or chew through your favourite pair of shoes from time to time? More importantly, who else will come bounding over to the front door to greet you, even if you were only gone for an hour?

‘WAG is the only shelter that will give them a chance’

Some animals out there have lots of unconditional love to give, but are just missing that best friend (or friends) to give it to. And like any human who has experienced heartbreak—or ever downloaded a dating app, for that matter—these animals have their own unique histories and, in some cases, trauma. And, as in humans, that trauma can sometimes manifest in the form of behavioural issues.

That’s where the good people at Whistler Animals Galore (WAG) come into play.

The non-profit and registered charity that started in 1982 shoulders the task of caring for lost and homeless dogs and cats from Whistler and beyond. That includes partnering with the Resort Municipality of Whistler to house impounded dogs and welcoming animals in need of critical medical care. Oftentimes, owners make the difficult decision to surrender their animals to WAG after realizing they can’t provide the care their pet requires. WAG staff also work to find not just any home, but the home best suited to the animals in their care, and do extensive rehabilitation work with animals that stand to benefit from it—the kind of time-intensive, gradual training and confidence-building that doesn’t happen at all rescue organizations. All this work pays off when an animal finds a home where he or she can thrive, and where the risk of that animal returning to a shelter is low.

Rehabilitation “happens at some other shelters but not at all of them,” explains WAG’s assistant manager Catherine Mazza. “Many shelters just do not accept animals with medical or behavioural issues—period—and we think that’s what makes WAG so special.

“Many of our animals did not have anywhere else to go, and often WAG is the only shelter that will give them a chance.”

Take Lola, a five-year-old pit bull mix brought to WAG by police almost four years ago. Seized after her owners were arrested, Lola’s unstable start to life resulted in some extreme fears and anxieties, but through ongoing training and staff’s patience, she has grown by leaps and bounds as she’s settled into shelter life. Around people she’s comfortable with, she’s affectionate, snuggly and overall “wonderful,” says Mazza.

While a stable, loving home would undoubtedly be a huge benefit for Lola’s development, not every prospective dog owner will be a match for her specific needs. As a reactive dog with a fear of men in particular, she needs a female owner with a quiet home and lifestyle who’s willing to make multiple trips to the shelter to get to know her.

If there’s one thing Mazza would like the community to know, it’s just how many special-needs cases end up on WAG’s doorstep. “There is a great need for more facilities that are willing and able to take on those that need more support,” she says.

Currently, the shelter has four dogs and seven cats up for adoption. That’s “pretty typical,” notes Mazza. “A bit low for dogs but we have three large-breed, long-term, special-needs dogs at the shelter who take up a lot of resources. A litter of puppies will change those numbers pretty quick, though!”

Mazza has been working at the local animal rescue for more than a decade, where a typical day for WAG’s employees includes “a lot of cleaning,” she says. “The mornings are the busiest with animal care, as they have all been alone at the shelter (and for the dogs, locked in kennels) for about 10 hours and all will need to be taken out, fed, and cleaned.”

As anyone who’s ever had one knows, puppies are responsible for the biggest messes, Mazza adds. “There is lots of laundry, dishes, scrubbing litter boxes, walking dogs, taking out the garbage, on and on,” she continues. And that’s not even including the admin side of the operation, like emails, phone calls, adoptions, animal intake, veterinary care, managing volunteers, foster homes, fundraising and more, she adds.

When it comes to raising funds, February is usually a big month for WAG and its annual “Month of Love” campaign. As part of this year’s event, animal lovers are invited to enter a free contest the shelter has dubbed “Love Me Tinder,” where they can submit photos of what their pets’ dating profiles and taglines would look like in order for the chance to win some prizes (submissions can be sent to cmazza@whistlerwag.com), while partial proceeds from every pizza sold during a Creekbread fundraiser held earlier this month will help fund the shelter’s operations.

But if we’re talking dating profiles, it’s really the current WAG residents that are on the hunt for their perfect match.

Think you might be ready to welcome a new love into your life? Keep scrolling to find out.

My perfect Sunday: A hike, a play, then a long nap!

Fun fact about me: I am high energy, unlike many labs.

I’m looking for: Someone who can handle my strength when I get excited.

CAL & SOL treats like warm chicken or roast beef will help you get on our good side.

CAL & SOL

Male

Age: about 3 years

Height: Cal is very tall. Sol is a bit shorter, but we are both big boys

Breed: Labrador retriever /mastiff cross

We’re brothers and our dream scenario would be to come as a package deal (or at least to find matches that would commit to regular visits together). Two is better than one, right? Our siblings and us were brought to WAG as stray/feral teenagers—after living the first six months of our lives without human interaction, we would not let anyone touch us for a very long time, but now, we’re looking for something serious and long-term with the right match. We love quiet walks in the woods. Tip: playing hard to get our first few meetings and bringing along treats like warm chicken or roast beef will help you get on our good side.

I get along with people who: Have the patience to understand we have some trust issues and will take the time to get to know us.

My simple pleasures: Playing chase in the yard with my favourite humans.

My biggest fear or most irrational fear: Meeting new people.

LOLA I’m not exactly a city girl and don’t love crowds, but I do love movie nights

LOLA

Female

Age: 5 years

Height: Medium

Breed:  Pit bull mix

I’ve called WAG home for almost four years, but I’m hoping to move on to something more permanent sometime soon! My dream house is somewhere quiet with easy access to the outdoors—I’m not exactly a city girl and don’t love crowds, but I do love movie nights, cuddling on the couch, and snacks. It takes me a long time open up to new people, but once you get to know me, I am affectionate, loyal loving and playful. Not interested in kids, cats, other dogs, or men—gals only! P.S., I never leave home without my muzzle (only the coolest girls wear one).

My perfect Sunday: A swim and then napping on the couch all the day!

The secret to getting to know me: Warm roasted chicken or delicious warm bacon! And patience.

My biggest fear or most irrational fear: New people

We’re the same type of weird if: We grunt like a little piggy when we are most happy.

MARY JANE There’s nothing better than morning snuggles

MARY JANE

Female

Age: 12 years old

Breed: Sphinx cat

Size: Small

I’m fresh off some recent dental surgery and feeling like a brand-new cat! I’m usually cold (#sphinxproblems) meaning my purrfect match would have a cozy fire I could curl up in front of. There’s nothing better than morning snuggles—unless we’re talking cuddling up in a blanket or on a heating pad. My demeanour might be mellow, but my maintenance isn’t. I require weekly baths and biweekly nail cleaning and trimming, while my ears must be cleaned every four days and my face cleaned morning and night. The unpleasant scrubbing associated with baths is well worth being wrapped up in a towel afterwards. It’s a lot, I know, but I’ll reward you with head nudges and nose kisses. Only when I’m in a cuddly mood, of course.

My perfect Sunday: Snuggling under a blanket.

My simple pleasures: A quiet home.

I’m looking for: Someone to look after me in my golden years.

JOJo Chin scratches and lying in the sun

JOJO

Male

Age: Senior

Breed: Domestic short hair

Size: Large and in charge

This older, green-eyed fella is looking for a quiet home, preferably with a homebody! I’m about a year into a diabetes diagnosis and hoping my perfect match can help me with my daily insulin injections. (It’s kind of hard to do yourself when you don’t have opposable thumbs). Likes: Chin scratches and lying in the sun. Dislikes: crates and kennels.

My perfect Sunday: Sleeping next to you.

I get along with people who: Are willing to care for me, including managing my diabetes!

The secret to getting to know me: Showing me love.

FEZZIK breakfast is what really lights me up

FEZZIK

Female

Age: 3.5 years

Breed: Domestic Shorthair

Size: Small

I am a sweet and sassy girl who would prefer to be the only pet in the house. The majority of my days are spent napping on the highest perch of my tower, but breakfast is what really lights me up. I can be gentle, but sometimes I’m a little cheeky and like to be a little rough. This is usually during play and was probably reinforced when I was younger by having humans play with their hands as toys. I will need time, patience and kindness while I learn that being rough during play is not okay.

I get along with people who: I know well. I am nervous of strangers!

The secret to getting to know me: Visit me a few times!

I’m looking for: A quiet home with a quiet family who will treat me like the queen I am.

COCONUT

Female

Age: 7.5 years

Breed: Domestic Longhair

Size: Medium

A little on the shy side with new people, but I love to be around my humans once I get to know them! Pretty easy going and love to chill (especially napping in spots with a view!) but down to play from time to time. Heads up, I’d prefer to be the only pet in my home.

What brought me to WAG: After adopting me as a kitten from WAG, a member of the family developed bad allergies!

My perfect Sunday: A play, a nap, and lots of pats!

I get along with people who: Like to pet big, squishy kitties!

CHEESE & CRACKERS We’re both night owls who love to play

CHEESE & CRACKERS

Females

Age: approximately 1 year

Breed: Domestic shorthair

Size: Small

In case you couldn’t tell by our names, we’re a two-for-one deal!! Our life before arriving at WAG is a bit of a mystery (concerned citizens noticed us and brought us to the shelter before winter came along), but we’re currently adjusting to life in our foster home. We’re both night owls who love to play (and love treats), but Cheese is the braver of the two of us. We’re still working on coming out of our shells!

Fun fact about me: We are most likely sisters.

The secret to getting to know me: Welcome us into your home and then give us time to get comfortable!

We’re the same type of weird if: You were also under-socialized with humans growing up!

WEEZY would love a home with a friendly dog pal

WEEZY

Female

Age: Senior

Breed: Domestic Shorthair

Size: Medium

Living with FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), an ultimately fatal disease, but feeling good and not letting it stop me from being playful, affectionate, and cuddly! Unfortunately my diagnosis means I can’t live with any other cats, but I would love a home with a friendly dog pal. Looking for a quiet home that can handle a few chronic health problems and doesn’t mind a little wheezing. ;)

My perfect Sunday: Napping, cuddling, playing, napping.

I get along with people who: Will take care of me in my old age!

I’m looking for: A quiet home with no other cats.

Liverpool midfielder Thiago in tears after pre-match injury, shows Carabao Cup final still matters - Sporting News

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara was left in tears after an injury suffered in the warm-up at Wembley meant that he was ruled out of the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

Thiago was in line to start in the showpiece game but ended up having to be replaced by Naby Keita.

The latest injury setback is hugely frustrating for Thiago, who has spent a lot of time on the sidelines since he joined Liverpool in 2020.

MORE: EFL Cup final minute-by-minute analysis

The Liverpool star had to be consoled by team-mate Alisson after it was revealed that he wouldn't be able to play against Chelsea.

Thiago's injuries at Liverpool

Thiago's first absence at Liverpool came shortly after he joined the club from Bayern Munich in September 2020 as he missed four games due to coronavirus. That was followed by a knee injury suffered against Everton which ruled him out for 17 games.

The Spaniard didn't suffer any further injuries last season, but he has endured more frustration so far this campaign. For instance, a calf problem kept him out for ten matches between September and October. He then had another spell out, missing three games after contracting Covid-19 again.

Then he was out between late December and early February with a hip injury.

Thiago's impressive performances this season

Thiago's frequent absences have been all the more frustrating given how impressive he has been for Liverpool this season when he has been fit.

Although he experienced some difficulties with regards to consistency during his maiden campaign at the club, Thiago has really stepped up this time around and has made a significant contribution with his performances, helping to create chances and dictate the tempo of play.

The Spaniard owns an 87% pass completion rate in Premier League play this season, and his xGBuildup (per 90) — the total expected goals of every possession Thiago is involved in minus his own shots and key passes — of 0.6 puts him second in the Premier League for all players with 15 or more appearances.

Liverpool will certainly hope that Thiago won't be out for too long on this occasion. Jurgen Klopp's side still have much to play for this season - they are six points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City with a game in hand, while in the Champions League they are 2-0 up against Inter Milan following the first leg of their Round of 16 tie. In addition, they are through to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup and will face Norwich at home in that competition.

TEE EFF CEE:

FC Dallas:

Preview (via Aasim Hashim)

TORONTO, Ont. - A busy and chaotic off-season for Toronto FC will come to an end on Saturday when the Reds officially open their 2022 MLS campaign against FC Dallas. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM EST and can be watched on TSN.

The Reds effectively hit the reset button following their dismal 2021 campaign. The off-season saw lots of changes on and off the field, with the Club parting ways with more than a dozen players from the 2021 squad and a new coaching staff.

While there is plenty of confidence and optimism heading into Saturday, Bradley did urge patience as he continues to impose his vision and playing style onto his players. An uninterrupted pre-season will have helped with that, but the Reds will continue to need more game time to get more and more comfortable with a new system.

There were many factors that can be attributed to the overall poor campaign last season. Being displaced south of the border for the first half of the season and the impact that had on the squad is certainly a consideration. However, the number of injuries to key players all throughout the season also started to take its toll and never allowed the squad to find any kind of cohesion.

Alejando Pozuelo, the 2020 MLS MVP, was one of many players who found himself on the sideline for lengthy periods of time. Pozuelo was limited to just 14 games last season and found the back of the net just once. The Spanish international will be looking to get back to the form that saw him dazzle fans across the league in 2020 and will be looking to become a key contributor on the other side of the ball this year as part of Bradley’s new system.

Along with Pozuelo, Bob Bradley will have a healthy roster to pick from in his debut game. Heading into the season opener, only Ayo Akinola (ACL) will be unavailable through injury and while Reds faithful are waiting on the Club’s marquee signing, Lorenzo Insigne, to debut, that won’t happen until later in the year. TFC’s other Designated Player acquisition from the winter, Carlos Salcedo, is expected to make his debut.

Toronto’s opponent on Saturday, FC Dallas have a lot of similarities between them going back to last season. Just like the Reds, FC Dallas also struggled to find wins including a disappointing end to the season where Dallas managed to win just three of its final 18 games. The 2021 season also prompted Dallas to make drastic changes across the board.

Nico Estévez joined FC Dallas over the off-season as the eighth head coach in franchise history and brings with him MLS experience having previously been with the Columbs Crew in 2017as an assistant and most recently an assistant with the US Men’s National Team program.

Along with a new head coach, FC Dallas also parted ways with a number of players - including last year’s top scorer Ricardo Pepi who joined FC Augsburg in January - and brought in nine new players to bolster their squad which included American international Paul Arriola and completed a club-record deal to bring in Argentinian winger Alan Velasco.

Similar to his Toronto counterpart, Estévez will have to focus on how his squad can keep the ball out of their own net. FC Dallas conceded 56 goals in 2021, which put them in the bottom three of the league behind Toronto FC (66) and FC Cincinnati (74).

Historically, FC Dallas has fared extremely well against the Reds, having won 11 of 18 all time meetings, including winning the last three matchups dating back to 2017. The clubs have not met each other since 2019, when FCD collected all three points in a 3-0 victory.

It’s been a long and busy off-season for TFC to once again strengthen this squad. While the path back to the top won’t be a quick or easy one, Saturday will be a fresh start and a first step for the Reds to return back to the summit of the MLS.

What will you be looking for in TFC’s season opener?

Games Notes

  • FC Dallas haven’t lost a home opener since 2010 (7 W, 5 D)
  • Club captain Michael Bradley can equal Justin Morrow’s record for second most appearances in club history (254). The all-time record belongs to Jonathan Osorio (292).

How to Watch

  • Opponent: FC Dallas
  • Kick-off time: 5:30 PM ET

Federal government says it will match donations to Red Cross Ukraine campaign - CBC News

The federal government says it will match Canadians' donations to the Red Cross in aid of Ukraine, up to a maximum of $10 million.

The policy was announced by the federal government on Friday. It applies to all donations under $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal made between Feb. 24 and March 18.

"The humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine requires all of us to come together," said International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan in a media statement. "We know we have more to do to support people affected by the conflict in Ukraine."

The federal government said the matching donations are in addition to the $50 million in funding given to Ukraine for development and humanitarian aid, and the recently announced $620 million in sovereign loans that Canada has extended to Ukraine.

The Canadian Red Cross says the donated money will be used to support immediate relief efforts in Ukraine, long-term recovery efforts and emergency preparedness.

"Money raised will enable the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to respond to humanitarian needs generated by almost eight years of conflict, as well as preparedness and response efforts due to heightened tensions in Ukraine," says a statement on the Canadian Red Cross website.

Canadians who want to donate to the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal can do so online or by calling 1-800-418-1111.

Russia vetoes UN vote

The announcement came as Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling on Moscow to stop its attack on Ukraine and withdraw all its troops immediately.

The veto was expected but the United States and its supporters argued that the effort would highlight Moscow's international isolation.

The 11-1 vote — with China, India and the United Arab Emirates abstaining — showed significant but not total opposition to Russia's invasion of its smaller, militarily weaker neighbour.

The resolution's failure paves the way for backers to call for a swift vote on a similar measure in the 193-member UN General Assembly, where there are no vetoes. There's no word yet on when an assembly vote might happen.

Unlike Security Council resolutions, General Assembly resolutions aren't legally binding, but they can function as statements of world opinion.

Match Analysis: Cruz Azul 3-1 Forge FC (4-1 agg.) -- Concacaf Champions League - Canadian Premier League

Final Score: Cruz Azul 3-1 Forge FC (4-1 agg.)
Goalscorers: Romero 5′, Baca 22′, Escobar 43′; Choinière 26′
2022 Concacaf Champions League
Round of 16 — Leg 2

Match in a minute or less

Forge FC’s first Concacaf Champions League journey came to an end on Thursday night at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, as they fell 3-1 to Cruz Azul in a hard-fought second leg of the round of 16. The Liga MX side opened the floodgates very early, as Ángel Romero got on the end of a free kick over the entire Forge defence. not long after, they made it 2-0 (3-0 on aggregate) thanks to Rafael Baca’s long-range screamer from outside the box.

Forge did get on the board with a historic first CPL goal in the Champions League, as David Choinière scored with a well-placed low strike from distance. The visitors’ celebrations did not last long, though; just before halftime, Cruz Azul’s Juan Escobar managed to sneak behind the backline and head in a third goal for his side. In the second half, as the game opened up even more, the home side had a few golden opportunities to widen their lead on the counter-attack, but they were thwarted by some excellent desperation defending and goalkeeping from Forge to keep it to a respectable two-goal deficit.

RELATED: RECAP: Forge FC eliminated from Concacaf Champions League with 3-1 loss to Cruz Azul

Three Observations

Forge struggle to deal with balls over defensive line

In the first leg, Forge demonstrated an excellent ability to defend against Cruz Azul’s attempts to play forward passes and break them down with build-up play. They held their shape well and they were comfortable tracking the ball with it remaining mostly in front of their back four. This time, though, Cruz Azul manager Juan Reynoso seemed to have a different plan for attacking his Canadian opponents.

Cruz Azul were very deliberate on Thursday, especially in the first half, with their attempts to find target men with long balls and, in particular, chipped passes to bypass the Forge backline. The aggressive off-ball running from Cruz Azul’s attackers caused no end of trouble for defenders, who found themselves a little flat-footed at times and couldn’t always recover to get between the ball and goal again.

Lobbed passes like that led to both the first and third Cruz Azul goals (although the first was a set-piece), and they had a few other opportunities like it especially in the first 45, though Forge eventually were able to track those runners a little better. In the second half, Forge opened up quite a bit more in search of another goal, which allowed Cruz Azul to play more direct through balls and keep it on the ground more, especially considering more of their attacks at that stage were counter-attacking rushes where they had a numerical advantage going forward.

Of course, Forge were shaken by the early goal, and as such had to try and recover before opening the taps and try to score. They proved their mettle in the second half by keeping Cruz Azul off the scoresheet despite how dangerous the hosts looked at times.

“We stood on the ball and we did some good things out there, and that was important for us, but it’s always gonna be difficult when you get scored on in the fifth and the 43rd minute,” said Forge boss Bobby Smyrniotis.

Cruz Azul show quality with quick movement, on-ball skill

There’s a reason Cruz Azul are one of the best teams in Mexico at the moment. The way they were able to pull Forge around the pitch with their passing and movement was evidence of the gap in level between the two sides. The visitors’ defensive workrate was incredibly high, but Cruz Azul seemed able to play around the shifting defenders quite comfortably.

When Forge players left their position to press a man on the ball, they were rarely successful in turning over possession; many of the Cruz Azul players have such quality with the ball at their feet that they’re unfazed by pressure and can turn to protect before finding a comfortable passing option. That kind of individual ability allowed them to be patient when necessary, and it also allowed them to try ambitious balls knowing the players ahead of them have the quality to receive a pass with excellent first touch.

Defensively, Cruz Azul’s midfielders seemed particularly adept at spotting errant passes and winning the ball back to either settle or spring a quick transition. A number of long balls from Forge ended up in Cruz Azul counters because of how well they could put the ball in dangerous spaces with first touches for interceptions.

All that added up to a game where Forge really struggled to gain and establish possession. They had just 35% of the ball and completed only 213 passes, struggling to really play the game on their own terms as they normally do.

“It’s a team that doesn’t lose the ball often, and when they lose it they collapse really quick,” David Choinière told reporters postgame. “They get the ball really fast. They close the space down, we tried to get out of pressure. It’s a good matchup against them; at home we surprised a lot of people, and we’ll go and learn, and get back to work.”

David Choinière makes history on memorable occasion for club, country

If Forge were going to score a goal, of course it was going to David Choinière. The 25-year-old has now scored five times in continental competitions for this club, as he continues to show up on the biggest stages. Somehow, it always seems to be him scoring the big goals (in fact, this round of 16 in the Champions League has been a big one for both Choinière brothers).

Despite the lopsided aggregate scoreline, Forge made history on Thursday night. They’re the first CPL side to score in the Concacaf Champions League, and just the third Canadian club to score at Estadio Azteca. They, a four-year-old club, managed to put up a fight against a massive opponent in one of the most storied footballing venues in all the world.

“I think for that brief moment you realize that as a group, as a club, we’ve done something special,” Smyrniotis said after the game. “After three years of competing and doing things right, I think we’ve been rewarded greatly by being in this competition.”

What also can’t be understated is the value this game could have in both the short and long term. For one thing, they’ll have these two games under their belts already when the CPL season begins in just over a month.

More important than that, though, is the taste Forge now have of playing at that level, on that stage.

Youngsters like Terran Campbell, Alessandro Hojabrpour, and Garven Metusala now have this experience of playing a Liga MX team at the Azteca. So, too, do the young substitutes who came on — Kwasi Poku, Woobens Pacius, and Noah Jensen (who, notably, just made his professional debut in this game). The memories of playing in the Champions League so early in their professional careers will influence their paths from here and will help shape them into better footballers down the road.

Just as they did in Leg 1, Forge did themselves and their country proud on Thursday against Cruz Azul; this was always going to be a tough ask for them, but to continue fighting to the end, as they did — despite their out-of-season fitness levels and the Mexico City altitude — is commendable.

“If you haven’t been down to Mexico City and played a game at the Azteca, oxygen is a rarity in the sky here,” Smyrniotis said. “It’s a very difficult task, and to see some of the guys who had 90 minutes tonight, in Alex Achinioti-Jonsson, Dom Samuel, Kyle Bekker, and all the other guys was absolutely fantastic.”

The Forge coach was sure to include in his postmatch remarks some congratulations for his players and staff, not only for getting to this stage but for holding their own against a high-quality opponent. Now, knowing that there’s no Concacaf League waiting for them in the summer, Forge will be diving head-on into their CPL ambitions, desperate to return to the continental stage.

CanPL.ca Player of the Match

Ángel Romero, Cruz Azul

The Paraguayan forward was constantly in motion in this game, and Forge had a lot of difficulty marking him. Romero slipped behind the defence on a set-piece to open the scoring five minutes in, and he managed to get alone in behind several more times to nearly widen the gap.

What’s next?

Forge’s attention now turns back to the Canadian Premier League, which they will kick off on Sunday, April 10 when they travel to Vancouver Island for a CPL Final rematch with Pacific FC (7 pm ET/4 pm PT).

EMU Tennis Hits the Road for Three-Match Weekend - EMU Eagles

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —  The Eastern Michigan University tennis team hits the road this weekend with three stops scheduled. The Eagles will kick off the weekend with a Friday doubleheader, starting with Butler at 11 a.m., followed by a trip to Bellarmine with the match starting at 5 p.m., Feb. 25. The following day, Saturday, Feb. 26, the Green and White wrap up at Mercer with the match scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Eastern (6-5) split its most recent doubleheader, Feb. 18, defeating Northwood 7-0, before falling to Michigan State, 6-1. Redshirt senior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) had herself a day, going 2-0 in singles competition, and defeating the Spartans two-time All-Big Ten honoree, Mary Lewis, at No. 1, 7-5, 6-4. The performance earned Pelayo her first Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week honors. Freshman Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) saw her undefeated streak end at 8-0, after falling to her MSU opponent at No. 4 in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.

Meanwhile, in Indianapolis, Butler (1-8, 0-1 Big East) is on a five-match losing streak, dating back to Feb. 6, and has lost six of its last seven contests. Two of those losses came at the hands of Mid-American Conference teams  Ball State (6-1), and Western Michigan (6-1), Jan. 30, and Feb. 19, respectively.

Bellarmine (0-10) has had a slow start to its season, as it still searches for its first win. The Knights most recently dropped two matches to Tennessee, Feb. 20, 4-0, 7-0. Additionally, the Broncos of WMU have also topped the Louisville-based squad, 4-0, Feb. 12.

Losing its last match to Georgia Tech, 7-0, Mercer (5-5) looks to get back on track. The Bears have lost three of their last four contests, with the sole win in that stretch coming against Georgia College, Feb. 16, 6-1.

Results will be made available following the conclusion of the last match. For the most up-to-date information on all things EMU tennis, continue to visit EMUEagles.com, or follow us on Twitter, @EMUEaglesTennis.

Shapovalov overcomes service struggles, 1st-set loss to win opening match in Dubai - CBC Sports

Canada's Denis Shapovalov advanced to the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Hungary's Marton Fucsovics on Tuesday.

Shapovalov had eight aces in the match and broke Fucsovics four times on seven chances.

However, the No. 6 seed from Richmond Hill, Ont., struggled with his serve at times. He committed six double-faults and posted a 64 per cent accuracy on his first serves.

Shapovalov evened his career record against Fucsovics at 1-1. It was the first meeting between the two players since Fucsovics eliminated Shapovalov in the first round of the 2020 Australian Open.

Rublev advances on heels of 9th tour title

Second-seeded Andrey Rublev beat Daniel Evans 6-4, 7-5 in the first round on Tuesday, just two days after winning his ninth tour title.

The Russian, who defeated Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final at the Open 13 tournament in Marseille on Sunday, next faces Soonwoo Kwan after the South Korean beat Ilya Ivashka 6-3, 6-2.

The seventh-ranked Rublev also won the doubles title in Marseille with Ukrainian partner Denys Molchanov.

"I arrived at the hotel maybe at 2 a.m. today," Rublev said in his on-court interview Tuesday. "I slept maybe six or seven hours. I was thinking that probably no chance for me to win, and here I am, I won my first round so I'm really happy. I cannot imagine a better start."
